(2x switch groups) Vocabulary: Adagio/Allegro Shosholoza: Free play and exploration time with the yellow kits of instruments. : Ask students to stand. Sing the hello song and ask them to listen on which word you are clapping (clap on the rhythm of ). All play the rhythm of each time it comes in the song using an instrument from the kit (without the guitar). Add the guitar accompaniment, asking the children to play only on the rhythm of tideo. Sing song using each child s name at least once. Ask the children to keep out one finger cymbal. Sing, Instruments away now tideo as a transition to the next activity. Ask children to stand in a circle. Holding a finger cymbal, move around in the circle while singing, tapping a child s cymbals at the end of each phrase (on the rests). Repeat. See if they know the words that were sung right before the cymbal was played. Display felts to help remember some of the words. Repeat. If time, play with CD, tapping the beat on the hand drum for the B section. Introduce your cat (named Adagio) and your little mouse (named Allegro) and explain what Adagio and Allegro mean in music. Tell the story of the cat and mice and then ask them to play the part of Adagio the cat or Allegro the mouse. TIP: If you don t have time to do it twice, trying both parts, let them know they will have a chance to do it again next week. What s Your Favorite? Teacher sings, Sing me your name using so & mi while throwing a yarn ball to one child. Child sings back, My name is using so & mi; and throws the ball back to teacher. Continue until all children have sung their name. When you repeat the activity, sing, What s your favorite color? Instead of asking them their name again. This is preparation to march to a new Orff instrument later Say, Stop" when tick tock block stops. Ask them to listen for tempo changes; match tempo with their movement. Ask them to dance in place or patsch when they hear the sopranino. (Play in F pentatonic, using FGA CD). This is preparation for free play time on the Orff instruments Alternate between the tick tock block and the sopranino. Have them raise their arms and put their fingertips together, then lower arms when they hear you play finger cymbals. This is preparation for putting the mallets to rest on the Orff instruments. Show mallets and how to use instrument as their bed, make a joke that their heads/feet should be together; don t let them fall out of bed or even have their feet sticking out. Orff Rules Rules All children sit and listen while teacher explains and demonstrates the rules: Walk around Bottoms up Play like butterflies not elephants No mallets in the holes Leave the bars as they are How to lay the mallets to rest Best place to hit the bar for the best sound. Send one child at a time to an instrument to demonstrate. Orff Instruments In F Free Play Activity (Exploration) Old Gray Cat (Exploration) Free Play Activity: Choose one child to demonstrate practice playing (upon hearing Sopranino), resting mallets (upon hearing FC) and walking to new instrument (upon hearing tick tock block.) Invite all the children to play, following the signals. Tell students to go to a different row after they have laid the mallets to rest & heard the tick tock block give the walking signal. Tip: Children should have the experience of playing several different types/ sizes of Orff instruments in each lesson. Old Gray Cat: Using the recording, encourage the students to play in response to what is happening in the song. Repeat after they switched instruments. IF TIME, use hoops with metal bars in one & wood bars in the other to conduct song. 2 Lesson Plan 2 Activity Title Comments Gathering Drum with Hello Song Shosholoza (Exploration) The Gaz (New) (Piano) Shosholoza: Free play and exploration time on the large drum. Play with two hands, two fingers, scratches, circles, fists, swishes The Gaz: Before using the CD, have the students follow your verbal directions: close (make a fist with both hands on drum), open (hands are flat on drum) and flip (turn hands over, palms up). Tell them, Now we have our Blues moves ready! The Blues has a chord pattern that we will follow with our hands. Follow the chord changes: I closed fist IV open hand V flip open hand Middle section: fingers go on a walk on the drum, ending with the V, IV and I chord, tremolo and accent. : Ask the children if they remember what word we were playing on for our hello song this year. Review we will play on all the s. Practice playing the rhythm of tideo on the gathering drum without the guitar. Add the guitar strumming the beat. Sing each child s name at least once. Holding a finger cymbal, move around in the circle while singing, tapping a child s cymbals at the end of each phrase (on the rests). Repeat. See if they know the words that were sung right before the cymbal was played. (Sun, moon, noon) Display felts to help remember some of the words. Repeat. If time, play with CD, tapping the beat on the hand drum for the B section Finger Cymbals Hand Drums Sun, Moon, Chimney Visual Movement Run, Run! Vocabulary: Allegro/Adagio Review the names for the cat (Adagio) and the mouse (Allegro). Have them act out the part of the cat or the mouse. Repeat movement, trying the other part if desired. Cat/Mouse Puppet Solo Singing Sing Me Your Name! My Name Is! What s Your Favorite? If you need to learn the names of your children sing, Sing me your name using so & mi while throwing yarn ball to one child one more week. If you know the names, sing different questions like, What s your favorite color? or, What s your favorite instrument instead of asking them their name. TIP: For those who already match pitch, you can change the intervals you are singing to make it more challenging to echo back. Use a variety of major and minor intervals. Activity Title Comments Gathering Drum with Hello Song and Movement Jackson s Morning Brush (Exploration) The Gaz (Piano) Sally Go Round The Sun Selections from Putumayo CDs are used as students enter. Jackson s Morning Brush: Explore different ways of drumming. Use THEIR ideas. The Gaz: Before using the CD, review the hand movement: Close (make a fist with both hands on drum), Open (hands are flat on drum) and Flip (turn hands over, palms up). Tell them, Now we have reviewed our Blues moves and we are ready to play the blues chord pattern with our hands. Follow the chord changes: I closed fist IV open hand V flip open hand Middle section: fingers go on a walk on the drum, ending with the V, IV and I chord, tremolo and accent. Shout out, Close, Open or, Flip so children are changing hand positions with the chord changes of the song as indicated in the teacher s music. Give the cue slightly ahead of the beat so they will change at the correct time of the chord change. End with a tremolo (play quickly on the drum) and an accent (one loud beat). : Sing the verse, Time for Music, with everyone playing the beat. Demonstrate how to raise their voices for the first tideo and lower their voices for the next one. Remind them to have beautiful tone quality. Sing again and ask the children to play only on the rhythm for each tideo. Practice playing on the drum with the teacher before adding guitar. Sing each child s name in the song at least once. End by singing high and low on the o of and a tremolo and accent. Sally Go Round The Sun: Hit the teacher s hand with a high or low hand clap after Sun, Moon, and Noon as you sing the song. Ask them to sing the song and clap their own hands on these beats. A Section March in a circle around the gathering drum, encouraging them to keep the beat in their feet, clapping after Sun and Moon and hitting the gathering drum after noon when they say, BOOM! B Section Tap the beat on the gathering drum; asking children to keep the beat with their hands. Voices and bodies raise on the word Up. Play the instruments as the sopranino plays. Stop when it stops. Children stand as the teacher sings different pitches using the phrase, Jump frog jump and asks the children to echo. The teacher gently throws the frog to a child. Explain they should echo the pitches and then throw the frog back. Depending on the child, you can use harder or easier pitches. Use a variety of intervals so the children have to listen carefully to echo accurately. Tip: This is a great place to have both major and minor intervals. If the student cannot echo the teacher, have the student initiate the pitches and the teacher will echo so they can hear the match and feel it was successful. What s Needed Frog Puppet, Frog Toy or Bean Bag Instrument Kit Tone Blocks Finger Cymbals Jump Frog Jump Vocabulary: Piano Practice playing, Jump frog jump on the tone blocks, tapping as you say each word, Practice Jump frog jump again but use the mallet to scrape the mallet on a fourth beat. After this four beat sequence of tap, tap, tap, scrape, pretend the mallet is the frog and have it Jump inside the tone block. Lay the tone block down, with the mallet inside and quietly say, Splash. As you read the story, do the sequence above each time, Jump frog jump is read. Using the finger cymbals, play gently, making a large circle like a ripple when something goes in the water. Emphasize the sound of the water will be very soft and gentle Piano. Explain to play the finger cymbals after the phrase, Out of the water is read. Since each page repeats the phrase from the page before, pause at the end of the phrase and see if the children can fill in the last word. Ex: This is the (frog) that was under the (fly) that climbed out of the (water). Finger Cymbals Tick Tock Block Sopranino Jump Frog Jump Book Movement Echo Play Review the activity from last week. Play the tone block to signal the children should walk. Using a cow bell, Tick Tock Block. Children echo the rhythm by clapping Chose easy four beat rhythms using quarter and eight notes. Review what the finger cymbals mean. Echoes: After the cowbell plays, the children echo the simple four beat rhythms, playing any bars they like. Repeat song having everyone practice keeping the beat on F and C. If the above was successful, repeat with the lowest instruments keeping the beat while the rest play on the phrase endings. Before getting out the parachute, make a large circle and explain there will be very specific parts for our parachute dance. Let them know if they do something that is not in the dance, they will be asked to sit and watch, so listen very carefully. Ask the children to follow your movement as you walk around the circle, stop and shake your arms (as if shaking the parachute), raise your arms high over head, lower them as if putting something behind your back as you crouch down and wait quietly. Explain we will now do these movements with the parachute, reminding the children that these are the only parts of the dance so be careful to not add anything. Some classes may need more specific direction such as no pushing, running, shouting. Using the parachute, march in a circle keeping the beat in the feet for Five little leaves through the town while holding on to the edge of the parachute (there may not be enough handles for everyone and that s okay). After Town, stop and make wind sounds by shaking the parachute. Lift the parachute high when singing low to high, And one little leaf. Warn everyone to hold the parachute tightly as you lower it behind your back and crouch down. Wait quietly under the parachute for the singing and playing of the last seven notes so we know when to come up again. If you see anyone intentionally not following those directions, (shouting, pushing, etc) take them by the hand, sit them on the side and ask them to watch so they can observe how it is done. Ask the four children seated at the glockenspiels to sing and play their phrases with no pauses between players. Call up a new child for each glockenspiel. Ask the remaining children to sit behind one of the players. Have the child sing the phrase before they play the glockenspiel part. Remind the other children to have good music manners and listen to the children that are singing their solo. When each child finishes their part, they move to a new line and the player behind them moves up. If there is no one in their line, they can sing and play the part again. On wind, show the child to gently glide their mallets over the bars, just as they did last week for Water on Jump Frog Jump. As the leaves tumble down, we play from high to low. Ask another child to come and play with the first child for the next verse, Four Little Leaves, reminding the others to watch carefully since they might be next to play. Ask several more children to play the next verse. Finally have everyone play the next verse. If this is successful, ask the largest instruments to keep the beat while the smaller instruments play at the end of the phrases. Use finger cymbals and tick tock block to signal switching instruments. Echoes: Using a cow bell, play a four beat rhythm (using quarter and eighth notes) and have the children echo the rhythm by clapping. Choose a child to name a rule, go to an Orff instrument and play the same rhythm after you play it on the cowbell. Continue until all children are at the instruments playing echoes. Using the sopranino, have the children free play when you play. 8 Lesson Plan 8 Activity Title Comments Entrance Music Five Little Leaves As they arrive, encourage students to go to the Orff Instruments and play in a way they think will go well with the song. Explain that this can be ways we ve played the song in class or make up your own way to play. Remind them of the beat, the glissando, playing on the rests and playing high to low for the ending. Repeat if needed. What s Needed Orff In C Orff Rules Orff Instruments in F : Encourage everyone to sing the song accurately so our voices are on the same pitches at the same time. Review the two parts, beat and rhythms. The lowest instruments keep the steady beat. All others play on the tideo rhythms. Count the steady beat in first using One, two, the beat goes first or One, two, steady beat in the tempo you want them to play or have one student give the tempo by playing the beat. After practicing your regular verse, review the names of the instruments, xylophones, metallophones and glockenspiel. Review the wood sound and metal sound verses. Before singing each verse, ask the children on a metal sound to raise their hands and then children on a wood sound. After each verse, create a B sections having them free play to the guitar (only use the I chord) or sopranino. Conductor Game: Explain to them that one person is the conductor. Have one hoop with metal bars and one hoop with wooden bars inside. When the conductor jumps into both hula hoops everyone plays and when the conductor jumps out everyone stops, if the conductor jumps only in the hoop with the wooden bars, only children on xylophones will play and for the hoop with metal bars inside, metallophones and glockenspiels will play. Choose someone to be the conductor. You can add the sopranino while the conductor is in any hoop to add melody and phrasing or play an Orff instrument. Example: For the horse the teacher sings, Neigh, neigh, want to go for a ride? using do, mi and so and the students will echo back. You can change the notes for each animal making it harder or easier to echo. Each page when the spider is busy spinning her web, get up and sing the song with the scarves/streamers. SOLOS: Have the children sing the lines for each pumpkin as a solo and put them back up one by one on the gate. If you have a big class, you can start the activity with five children singing the solo to put up the pumpkins before counting them. Use different major and minor intervals for the solos depending on the level of the child. For, Oohh went the wind children make swishes on the drum for the wind and on Out play a big accent. When the pumpkins are running away after, Clear out of sight have all of them play a tremolo until all pumpkins are gone. Whether The Weather: For the first phrase move hands slowly towards the center of the drum and play on the rest. For the second phrase move hands back out towards the rim of the drum and play on the rest. For the third phrase move hand back to the center of the drum and play a tremolo on the fermata. For the fourth phrase hands come back out. Play on the rest. Explain that a long hold in music is called a fermata. Repeat a few times! Everyone stands in a large circle. Walk three steps (each step one beat) into the circle and hit the drum on the rest. Walk three steps out of the circle and clap. Walk in four steps, pausing on the fourth step, playing a tremolo on the drum. Then, walk very quickly back out with fast steps and clap on the final rest. Review the song. Place the hand drums close together to form a circle, children sitting behind their drum. TIP: If some are playing at other times, give the students an activity when they are not playing on, Yes, ma am and, Soso, such as having them flap their wings on the phrases before they sing and play their response. This will keep them from playing when it s not time. For the B section, all rise with shaker eggs and do a silly turkey dance around the instrument kit circle. Bring out the turkey puppet as everyone dances around during the B section. When the A section returns, everyone chooses a new instrument. Use the CD. Repeat at least once! All are welcome to free play until it s time to play, Yes, ma am again. Pass out farm puppets that are part of the book (horse, cow, goat, pig, dog, cat, duck, rooster, owl). You can skip some of the animals or have more than one depending on what puppets you have available. Solos: Read the book and have the child echo when it s their animal. Example: For the horse the teacher sings, Neigh, neigh, want to go for a ride? using do, mi and so and the student will echo back. Place the felt turkey body on the felt board and see if they can guess who this is and ask them what s missing. Sing the chorus of the song. Ask the children to close their eyes for a big surprise and put a feather behind each child. Sing, Who has a purple one? Demonstrate how to sing, I have the purple one and put the feather up on the turkey. Several children sing their color before going back to the song. This is a fun minor song that can be accompanied on the guitar. Review that Chester the Chipmunk is curious about the sounds he hears. Have everyone walk as the teacher leads with Chester the puppet, or pretends to be Chester, chanting these words: He walks and walks and hears a sound so stops. Instruct everyone to remove the instruments from their backpack so they are close by, easy to pick up and play. Explain to play one of the instruments when Chester s walking stops, as the piano plays the high low. Switch to a different instrument for each stop Chester makes. Perform with CD. Place the four instruments from the teacher kit behind the felt board. Using the CD, the teacher will play one instrument at each of the four stops. The children guess which instrument the teacher is playing and play along. At the end of the song, the teacher holds up the instrument that was played to see if everyone guessed and played it correctly. Have a student sit behind the board and choose an instrument to play at each stop. All play along using the instrument you think the student is playing. The student shows which instrument to see if everyone was correct. Put instruments back in the backpacks. All Instrument Felt Board Partner Clap Game Whether The Weather Vocabulary: Fermata Ask one of the children to raise both hands. Sing the song, clapping the hands of a child on each phrase ending. On the fermata, facing one of the children, hold both hands as you lift the arms on one side and follow as you turn around, coming back to facing the child, never dropping hands (called the dishrag). Choose a partner and ask two children to stand nearby as you do the movement for the class. Remind them to do the partner clap on all the phrase endings as we did earlier with the gathering drum. Ask the children to do the dish rag on the fermata. If time, repeat song with or without CD. Sing the song as you play the beat on the big D and A. Sing the song as you play the end of each phrase on any two notes you choose. Use the finger cymbals to signal laying the mallets to rest and choosing a new instrument. Shoo Turkey: Practice playing two times on each, Yes, ma am and, Soso as practiced with the drums on any bars they like. Practice putting the mallets to sleep and doing the turkey strut around the instruments to a new one for the B section. They can free play during the short interlude between the B and A section. The sopranino can be added to indicate a free play. Use the recording and repeat the song! TIP: If needed, remind students to put the mallets down and walk around the instruments.
