KEAN UNIVERSITY LIBRARY GUIDE Graduate Research Resources Welcome to the Kean University Library! The Library offers a broad range of resources and services designed to meet the academic information needs of the Nathan Weiss Graduate College. The Library, which is located in the heart of the Kean campus, provides knowledgeable and friendly staff to help you find the print and online resources you need to succeed as a graduate student. The Library s home page (http://library.kean.edu) serves as the gateway to the online resources and services available from the Library. The Library provides a broad range of print and online materials that support graduate programs. From the Library s home page (http://library.kean.edu), you can find: Books, E-books, Videos, & More (Kean Catalog) Articles & More (Databases, Full-text, E-journals) Periodicals List (Holdings Information for Journals, Magazines, Newspapers) Research Guides (Subject-Focused Research Resources) See pages 2 through 5 of this guide for more information about getting started using the Library s specialized subject databases. The Library strives to provide student-centered services that meet the information needs of graduate students. For example, our Interlibrary Loan service can obtain resources for you from other academic libraries and research institutions. Do you need assistance finding material for your research? Click Research Guides to access a collection of subject-focused research resources. Your Kean University librarians have created these guides to provide you with recommended resources for starting your research, finding books, finding articles (and selecting databases), finding Web sites, and citing sources. The Library offers more than 250 online research databases to support the research needs of the Nathan Weiss Graduate College. To start using the Library s online databases to search for journal articles on specific topics of interest, go to the Library home page (http://library.kean.edu). Click Articles & More to access the Databases page. The databases are listed alphabetically, and by subject, database type, and vendor. [Note: When you are off-campus, you will be asked to type your Kean Google e-mail username and password after you click on a database name.] Brief directions are provided on the next pages to help you navigate several of the Library s online databases. ABI/Inform Collection ABI/Inform Collection provides comprehensive coverage of business publications, including full text for the Wall Street Journal from 1984 to the present. Also features EIU ViewsWire from the Economist Intelligence Unit, which can be searched by channel, country, or date. To access ABI/Inform Collection: Click the letter A on the alphabetical menu. Click ABI / INFORM Collection (ProQuest). CINAHL with Full Text The Cumulative Index to Nursing & Allied Health Literature (CINAHL) provides scholarly information (including evidence-based practice articles) on nursing, seventeen allied health fields, alternative medicine, consumer health, and biomedicine. To start using CINAHL with Full Text: Click the letter C on the alphabetical menu. Click CINAHL with Full Text (EBSCOhost). Note: Add additional EBSCOhost Research Databases (such as MEDLINE) to your search by clicking Choose Databases just above the search box. 2

Dissertations & Theses Global (ProQuest) Dissertations & Theses Global provides access to doctoral dissertations and master's theses, most with indexing from 1743, abstracts from 1980, and full-text from 1997 to the present. To access Dissertations & Theses Global: Click the letter D on the alphabetical menu. Click Dissertations & Theses Global (ProQuest). Type your keywords in the search box. Alternatively, switch to the Advanced Search form, type an author s name in the search box, and change Anywhere to Author in the drop-down box to the right of the search box. ERIC ERIC, the Educational Resource Information Center database, provides comprehensive (but not the most upto-date) coverage of education; includes educational documents and journal articles; and offers an excellent subject thesaurus. To access ERIC: Click the letter E on the alphabetical menu. Click ERIC (EBSCOhost). Note: Add additional EBSCOhost Research Databases (such as Education Source) to your search by clicking Choose Databases just above the search box. Historical Abstracts Historical Abstracts offers abstracts of journal articles, book citations, dissertations, and conference proceedings on world history (excluding the United States and Canada) from 1450 to the present. To access Historical Abstracts: Click the letter H on the alphabetical menu. Click Historical Abstracts (EBSCOhost). 3

JSTOR JSTOR provides archival access to scholarly journals in wide-ranging academic disciplines; JSTOR does not provide the most recent issues but instead provides access to a journal's older issues. To access JSTOR: Click the letter J on the alphabetical menu. Click JSTOR. PAIS Index PAIS Index covers public and social policy issues from a wide variety of selected sources from 1972 to the present. Also provides access to PAIS Archive, which includes sources dating back to 1915. To access PAIS Index: Click the letter P on the alphabetical menu. Click PAIS Index (ProQuest). Project MUSE Project MUSE features scholarly articles from a wide range of humanities and social sciences journals. To access Project MUSE: Click the letter P on the alphabetical menu. Click Project MUSE. 4

PsycARTICLES PsycARTICLES provides access to scholarly, peer-reviewed articles from journals published by the American Psychological Association. To access PsycARTICLES: Click the letter P on the alphabetical menu. Click PsycARTICLES (EBSCOhost). Note: Add additional EBSCOhost Research Databases (such as PsycINFO, PsycTests, Mental Measurements Yearbook with Tests in Print, and PsycBooks) to your search by clicking Choose Databases just above the search box. SAGE Journals Online SAGE Journals Online provides a collection of journals published by SAGE, including coverage of business, communications, criminal justice, education, health sciences, psychology, science, and technology. To access SAGE Journals Online: Click the letter S on the alphabetical menu. Click SAGE Journals Online. Hover over the Search button, then select Advanced search. Type your key terms in the search boxes. ScienceDirect (Elsevier) ScienceDirect provides access to peer-reviewed journal articles in the sciences, social sciences, and the humanities. To access ScienceDirect: Click the letter S on the alphabetical menu. Click ScienceDirect (Elsevier). Click Advanced search to access the search template. Type your key terms in the search boxes. To explore numerous other databases for your subject discipline, go to the Library s home page (http://library.kean.edu), click Articles & More, and then click a subject area (such as, Business, Chemistry & Physics, Education, Health, Humanities, Nursing, Public Administration, Social Sciences, and Theatre) under the All Subjects heading. 5

Easy Bib is an online tool that helps you create bibliographies using MLA, APA, Chicago, Turabian and other citation styles. With EasyBib you can produce a works cited page and create parenthetical (intext) citations. To sign up for your own free account: Go to the Library home page (http://libary.kean.edu). Click the EasyBib logo on the left-hand side of the screen. Use EndNote Online, a bibliographic citation manager, to keep track of the books and articles you locate in various research databases. You can also manually add citation information to EndNote from books and print journals articles you have on hand. EndNote Online will help you to organize your source information and then to create bibliographies in your required citation styles (including APA, MLA, and others). Moreover, EndNote Online provides a free Cite While You Write plug-in for your computer, which will enable you to access your EndNote Online account while working in Microsoft Word. To sign up for your own free account: Click the EndNote Online logo on the left-hand side of the screen.
