Horton Kit

Attention, Leaders! Introduce a New Generation of Readers to Horton Children will love meeting Horton for the first time, and adults will get a kick out of seeing their beloved elephant in a new adventure. These books are not only a delight to read aloud, but they spark discussion about friendship and bullying for the very young. Included in this kit are a announcement sheet for your bulletin boards and newsletters, a template for making elephant ears with your participants, and activity sheets to use during your program or to send home with patrons. Horton Hears a Who! HC: 978-0-394-80078-3 GLB: 978-0-394-90078-0 This timeless, moving, and comical classic reminds readers of all ages that a person s a person, no matter how small! Thanks to the irrepressible rhymes and eye-catching illustrations, young readers will learn kindness and perseverance from the very determined and very endearing Horton the elephant. Use this book to talk about following your instincts and standing up for what s right. Horton Hatches the Egg HC: 978-0-394-80077-6 GLB: 978-0-394-90077-3 Horton is kind and trustworthy, but unfortunately the lazy bird Mayzie takes advantage of his good nature when she leaves Horton to watch her unhatched egg. Told with Dr. Seuss s signature rhymes and trademark illustrations, this is a tale that will be enjoyed over and over, by reader and listener alike. This book can be used to talk about commitment and the reward that eventually comes with it. Horton and the Kwuggerbug and More Lost Stories HC: 978-0-385-38298-4 GLB: 978-0-375-97342-0 NEW! This NEW Dr. Seuss book features familiar Seussian faces and places, including Horton the elephant, Marco, Mulberry Street, and a Grinch. This book provides great stories for discussion on fairness, patience, and honesty. Fans both young and formerly young will be pleased 100 percent. Kirkus Reviews

Everyone s an Elephant! Leaders: Photocopy this page and hand one out to each child. Have the children decorate their elephant ears with crayons and markers. Then cut the ears out and set them aside. Next, fold a sheet of construction paper in half the long way a few times to make it strong, and tape it to secure the paper. Now tape the ears to the band, leaving at least 5" of band between the ears. Last, tape the entire band together around the child s head. With these ears, everyone can be an elephant! Help Horton find his way to his friends on the dust speck! Be a friend and help Horton to the clover in the maze below. START Dust Speck Answer: START END Dust Speck END

Horton has many friends in the Jungle of Nool, and down in Who ville, too! Draw a picture of your friend below. (You can draw yourself, too, if you have enough room.)

What s a Bully? What s a Friend? In Horton Hears a Who! there are characters who tease and say mean things, like the kangaroos. Then there is Horton, who listens, supports, and protects the Whos. Explain to the kids that bullies say mean things, while friends say nice things. Ask the children to listen carefully to the quotes below and shout Bully! or Friend! after each quote as to who they think would say each. You re the biggest blame fool in the Jungle of Nool! You re safe now. Don t worry. I won t let you down. Find THAT! sneered the bird. But I think you will fail. I ll stick by you small folks through thin and through thick! Grab him! they shouted. And cage the big dope! Don t give up! I believe in you all!
