NBSO HOW & WHY DEAR MUSIC LOVERS, One of the main roles of a conductor is to inspire the orchestra. But when I first came to New Bedford, I was inspired myself by the fantastic musicians of the NBSO, the passionate staff and board, and the enthusiastic audience. It is therefore a great pleasure for me to be joining the family of the New Bedford Symphony Orchestra and to welcome you to our 20-20 season! In planning this season, I aimed to make each program not just a concert, but also a unique event, something special and out of the ordinary that you would typically only be able to experience at a festival. For example, one of the programs contains both Ravel Piano Concertos played by Roberto Plano: the G Major Concerto for two hands and the Concerto for the Left Hand. In January, pianist Inon Barnatan, artist-in-association with the New York Philharmonic, will make his debut with the NBSO in a program of two monumental works: Rachmaninoff s 3rd Piano Concerto and Stravinsky s Rite of Spring. This year marks two important centennials in the music world the 100th anniversary of Finland s independence, in which music, especially that of Jean Sibelius, played an essential role; and the 100th birthday of legendary composer, pianist, and conductor Leonard Bernstein. We, too, are How to order your subscription Please refer to the perforated page to the right for your subscription options, then choose one of these 3 simple methods: Online: www.nbsymphony.org/season-subscriptions Mail: NBSO, 128 Union St., Suite 204, New Bedford, MA 02740 Call the NBSO: 508-999-6276 celebrating these occasions: our opening concert Subscriber will feature Bernstein s Benefits! BERNSTEIN S INSPIRATION SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 23, 20, 7:30PM Daniel Chong, Violin THE SIBELIUS CONNECTION SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 26, 20, 3:00PM Lauri Porra, Electric Bass Guitar Derek Bermel: Dust Dances Leonard Bernstein: Serenade, after Plato s Symposium Gustav Mahler: Symphony No. 1 in D Major Leonard Bernstein was a true Renaissance man conductor, pianist, composer, and educator. Among his many activities, he was committed to promoting new American music as well as championing the music of Gustav Mahler, which he helped turn into mainstream repertoire. Celebrating Bernstein s centennial anniversary, the New Bedford Symphony opens its season with a program inspired by Bernstein s endeavors and passions. In between the enchanting sounds of American composer Derek Bermel s Dust Dances and Mahler s glorious Symphony No. 1, the brilliant Grammy-winning violinist Daniel Chong, leader of the Parker String Quartet, will perform Bernstein s own lyrical and virtuosic Serenade. Lauri Porra: Entropia: Concerto for Electric Bass Guitar and Orchestra (U.S. Premiere) Jean Sibelius: Symphony No. 1 in E Minor Not to be missed! Masterful bass guitarist Lauri Porra is the great-grandson of the great Finnish composer Jean Sibelius. In this concert, Porra will dazzle in the U.S. premiere of his own Concerto for Electric Bass and Orchestra, combining rock and classical music. The New Bedford Symphony will follow with the First Symphony of Jean Sibelius, written when he was just 33 years old, exploring the endless possibilities of the orchestra with fresh and youthful excitement.
