Andrea Esu & Fabrice INterview di Nicola Casalino For once we have decided to make the interview with a series of questions to our resident djs, the Esu brothers, in order to introduce some curiosity in more of their history. When did you decide to become a DJ and what was you mother s reaction. Fabrice: By chance, I was 30. My mum thought it was right to go and make some noise outside of our home too! Andrea Esu: She s has been always supporting me! Great mum! Can you remember the first time you played in a club? What kind of party was it? F: Can t forget! It was 1998, in a pub. I used to play rock, blues and funk. AE: It wasn t a club, I used to select music in a small, shabby pub in Ostia, it was about 1995. Is there a song you can consider the most representative for electronic music? F: Impossible to give you an answer, there are lots of songs. AE: Impossible to give a sensible answer... Have you ever joined some subculture when you were younger? I don t know, you were punk, dark, mod, freak... F: Not in a particular way, maybe a little freak, I used to love hippie clothes. AE: In the early 90s I was a Madchester fan, with bob haircut...i loved grunge shirts too. Which record would you bring if you had to go into exile? F: The Beatles Red and Blue antologies. AE: Only one? Abbey Road from The Beatles. Last book you read and last movie you watched at the cinema. F: The last whole book I read was a Steely Dan biography. The last movie I saw was Inglorious Bastards. AE: The Rotters Club by Jonathan Coe and (500) Days Of Summer. Best trip ever made? F: A tour of the Peloponnese with Francesca, my wife. AE: A Scandinavia tour on the road. Your favourite filmaker? F: Milos Forman. AE: Tarantino is amazing. I love Tornatore too. The most overrated band of all time and your favourite one. F: The Queen, I suppose. My favourite band is Steely Dan! I m a really big fan of them! AE: I can tell you the most underrated band, XTC...My favourite ones are The Beatles. Among the latest trends in electronic music, is there one you can t suffer? F: I can t think of any trend in particular. AE: I don t like metal /rave trend. What is the question you d never like to hear while playing on the desks? And the most absurd question? People can ask you any kind of questions, I once was asked for a slow song...in the middle of the night! :F Sorry, where s the dj?. The most absurd question is: Can you play some commercial/latin music? : AE Is there a night in particular where you keep a bad memory of? There have been a few, those in which they re always asking you to change music :F There s not one in particular. : AE What is the most important club where you played? Maria club in Berlin. :F Blast Your Ghetto in Antwerp, I ll be back there soon! : AE Your greatest passion besides music? Fiorentina football club and politcs. :F Fiorentina football club. : AE If you had to select a song for L-Ektrica Manifesto, what would it be? Blue Monday by New Order, of course. :F Blue Monday by New Order. : AE What do you have for breakfast? I drink some tea, I don t eat anything... :F After more than ten years I started to drink milk again! With Gentilini biscuits...! : AE What have you learned from your brother? Many things, not last the difference between a dj set and a musical selection. It was him who taught me to play a dj set. :F Mainly the love for music. Then many other things... : AE Say something to your brother. I love you, Secco. :F Yo Secco!!! :) : AE Give us a reason to dance at L-Ektrica night. There would be many reasons, because you re among friends. :F I play the music!!! : AE L-Ektrica is.? Curious and it can t stop moving... :F A fu**in miracle!!! :) : AE

Tuesday 26 January myspace.com/tensnake Tensnake INterview by Matteo Quinzi If a person for the first time listening to your music, without knowing anything about you, very difficult to say that you came from Germany. Your sound is so deep, warm and catchy that could be easier from Chicago, New York or a latin country. Where and how do you find it? Deep and Warm are two attributes that I always appreciate in music, so thanks for that! I think my sound is just a big potpourri of all the music I have listened to since I got my first cassette player. I always enjoyed all different kind of music, and always had a soft spot for melodies. Then I started buying vinyl back in 92, mainly house stuff. Of course a lot came from NY, Chicago or Detroit. It was like a whole new universe for me, so many amazing releases had to be discovered. That period of time definitely had big influence on me. Tell us about your carrier in music first the explosion with the project Tensnake. Do you already played and produced this specific and personal sound or have you passed first through different styles, like minimal techno or electro, for example? Maybe some of my tracks do have more a house or techno vibe, others are more disco or pop influenced. I think a song or track is always just a result of my emotion while I am working on it. Whatever comes out in the end So no, I am not trying to produce for a specific genre. But of course I started somewhere else than what I am doing today. Otherwise there would not be any progression, which would be boring ;-) Which is the origin or the story of the Tensnake moniker? I am sorry, but there aint no story behind it ;-) Which could be the perfect definition for your music? What do you think about all the hype around the nu disco producers? Do you feel comfortable in this scene? Hmm I dont know, i find it hard to define my own sound. In generell I always feel comfortable with things that are connected to disco ;-) But I really dont see myself as a Nu Disco producer. I am not a big fan of new music genres. They are important for the media, so they can name the next big thing and write about. It is useful to keep the machine running. But when one thing is over, what next? You stop producing music? For me the most important thing is to have fun with my stuff and to try to produce something, that lasts a little bit longer. You have remixed a lot of artists like Junior Boys, Foals, Sally Shapiro, The Faint that came from different scenes and styles and they sounds really different from the originals and each other. Do you have specific parameters when you remix a song or is more like a sound vision? Whenever I get a remix request I need to have an idea from the very first listening session. If I dont get it, I wont do a remix. And as you said, my interpretation can be different in many ways. Unfortunately it is not always matching with the idea the label had. You have released a lot of wonderful ep and singles for different labels like Mirau, Radius or Running Back. How long we have wait for listen your proper debut album? I have no idea. But 2010 is very much related to TENsnake, dont you think so? Three fundamental artists that inspiring your music and your life and the track that you have dreamed and you would have paid to write? Oh man, there are so many, but ok: Arthur Russel, Derrick May e Bernard Edwards. My favorite song is How Long by Ace. Which are your plans and hopes for your carrier in the 2010? Is there a producer or musicians which one you would like to collaborate as soon as possible? There are definitely a few people I would love to work with, especially some singers. I am already in contact, but cant say anything about it right now, as it is too early And I am really looking forward to Tim Sweenys label coming up. I absolutely appreciate his work and I think he will have some amazing releases in 2010 ;-)
