Curriculum Content A. Text Pages (15 minutes) Objective BS67.1: Know the difference between preliminary and text pages. PREINSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITIES The instructor will be familiar with section 19.3 which covers text pages, including page numbering of text pages, the first page of text, and the preface, foreword, prologue, introduction, and author's personal acknowledgments. CONTENT PRESENTATION AND LEARNER PARTICIPATION As a class the students will read and discuss LOC Manual: Lesson 19.3 and BF Rule 1 14.b, Rule 2 1 about text pages. Some reminders to the students: Can anyone describe the difference between a preliminary page and a text page? Answer: Preliminary pages, numbered as "p" pages, must come first in a braille volume. These are transcriber-added pages. Text pages, with Arabic numbering, which follow. These are the actual print pages. They start with the first page upon which narrative text is found. This may be a preface, introduction, foreword, author's note, etc. In literary-style pagination, Arabic numbering starts on the page of text and continues throughout all volumes, including any end matter such as an epilogue or information about the author. Answer: first Therefore, in the first volume following the preliminary pages, the first page of text will be numbered Arabic 1 (#a) placed at the end of line 1. Following the braille preliminary pages, the text pages are brailled in what order? Answer: In which they appear in print. Do you know what the first page of text may be? Answer: The first page of an introduction, acknowledgments, a preface or it might be the first page of the first chapter. What order would you transcribe these items? Answer: If there is both an introduction and a preface, for instance, braille them in the print order. Are there any exceptions to this rule? Answer: There is one exception to this rule: if a narrative piece, such as a preface, comes before a table of contents in print, in braille place the preface following the table of contents, but do not add to or change the print list of contents. When the arrangement of material at the beginning of a book is changed from the print copy, Braille Module 67-4

it must be noted on a transcriber's notes page in the volume only. Answer: first There are only two pages in a braille volume that do not carry a running head. What are these? Answer: The title page and the first page of text. B. Order of Preliminary and Text Pages (15 minutes) Objective BS67.2: Summarize the order of preliminary and text pages. PREINSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITIES The instructor will be familiar with section 19.4 which covers the Summary: Order of Preliminary and Text Pages. CONTENT PRESENTATION AND LEARNER PARTICIPATION As a class the students will read and discuss LOC Manual: Lesson 19.4 about the Summary: Order of Preliminary and Text Pages. Some reminders to the students: Who can list the steps to determine the order of braille preliminary and text pages? Answer: 1. Look carefully at all of the print pages that precede the start of the first chapter and determine which should be considered the beginning of "text" pages in braille. 2. Note which of the items in the list in 19.2 are pertinent to your book and list them on a sheet of paper in the order prescribed. 3. Note all other print preliminary pages (see 19.2h) prior to the beginning of text (if any), and continue listing each of those in the order in which they appear in the print book. 4. If a narrative piece, such as a preface, is located before a table of contents, transpose the two, but do not add to or change the contents page. The preface then becomes the first page of text. Only narrative pieces preceding the table of contents should be moved. The order and format of the braille version should be as close to the print copy as possible. 5. Consecutively number all items that follow the beginning of text in Arabic numbers, including poetry, epigraphs, etc. Ignore print pages that simply repeat the title. Braille Module 67-5

C. Books Broken into Units and Chapters (30 minutes) Objective Identify when books are broken into units and chapter titles. PREINSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITIES The instructor will be familiar with section 19.5 which covers book broken into units and section 19.6 which covers chapter titles. CONTENT PRESENTATION AND LEARNER PARTICIPATION As a class the students will read and discuss LOC Manual: Lesson 19.5 and BF Rule 1 13c(3) which covers books broken into units. Some reminders to the students: Whenever print uses an entire page for a unit heading (such as Part I), this page should be in braille. Answer: omitted. True or False: Such a heading should be centered and separated by a blank line from other headings or text that precede and/or follow it. Answer: True. Can you name some other rules that apply? Answer: Follow print capitalization. Ignore special typefaces when an entire heading is printed in italics or small capitals. Use emphasis indicators for a word, or words, within a heading that is emphasized or foreign. If an epigraph is printed on the same page as a unit or chapter title where would you place it? Answer: Place it before or after the title, as it appears in print, preceded and followed by a blank line. What margins would you use? Answer: Use normal margins and follow print for paragraph indentions. What about the quotation marks? Answer: Retain quotation marks if shown in print but do not note italics unless needed for emphasis or distinction. As a class the students will read and discuss LOC Manual: Lesson 19.6 which covers chapter titles. Some reminders to the students: What are chapter titles treated as? Answer: Centered headings. Can you name some other rules that apply? Answer: Follow print for capitalization and roman or Arabic numerals. Use emphasis indicators for print italics only if emphasis or distinction is required, such as for an italicized foreign word within the title. A long title should be divided and brailled, centered, on lines. Answer: consecutive. At least blank cells must be left at the beginning and ending of each line. Answer: three. If a chapter heading consists of both a number and a title, both should be placed on one braille line if permits. Answer: space. True Braille Module 67-6

or False: When placed on one line, the chapter number comes first followed by a space and the title regardless of print placement. True, and remember formatting must be consistent throughout a book. If any chapter heading in a book is too long to be placed on the same line with the chapter number what would you do? Answer: Then ALL chapters should have the chapter number centered on one line and the chapter title centered on the next. Where do you start the first chapter of a book? Answer: On a new braille page. What about when following chapters end in the middle of a braille page? Answer: The next chapter should start on that same page as long as there is room for the chapter heading with its preceding and following blank lines and at least one line of braille text. Would you use blank lines? Answer: When a new chapter starts at the top of a braille page, a blank line is left between the running head and the chapter heading. When a braille volume ends in the middle of a chapter, the first page of text in the following volume should carry, first, the of the book (no running head), followed by a blank line and the centered chapter heading followed by the word (cont.). Answer: Full title. D. Volume Size and Division (15 minutes) Objective BS67.4: Demonstrate a growing proficiency of volume size and division. PREINSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITIES The instructor will be familiar with section 19.7 which covers volume size and division. CONTENT PRESENTATION AND LEARNER PARTICIPATION As a class the students will read and discuss LOC Manual: Lesson 19.7 about volume size and division. Some reminders to the students: Where is the ideal place for a volume division? Answer: At the end of a chapter or other unit of the text. Is this always feasible? No, when this is not possible, division should be made at a point where there is a logical break in context or thought. Can you divide in the middle of a paragraph? Answer: Do not divide in the middle of a paragraph, no matter how long that paragraph may be. What is the optimal size of a braille volume? Answer: One hundred pages, but may vary between ninety and one hundred and ten or fifteen pages (a page, in this instance, refers to an actual piece of paper, not to braille page numbers). What if the total number of pages exceeds a hundred and fifteen? Answer: Divide the book into two volumes. What should we favor smaller volumes? Answer: Because of the bulk of a braille volume. The variation between any two Braille Module 67-7

volumes in the same book should not exceed pages. Answer: fifteen. Remember to include the preliminary pages in the page count. Can someone describe how to determine in advance the number and length of braille volumes? Can you remember the formula? Answer: a) Braille 50 full pages of braille. Include preliminary pages in this count only if they are full, or nearly so. b) 50 braille pages equal print pages. c) The total number of print pages in the book is. d) Divide the total number of print pages by the answer in line (b). This will determine t the number of braille half-volumes. e) For an estimate of the number of full braille volumes, divide the answer in (d) by 2. E. Appendices, Glossaries, Bibliographies, Indices, Etc. (30 minutes) Objective BS67.5: Know how to transcribe appendixes, glossaries, bibliographies, indexes, etc. PREINSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITIES The instructor will be familiar with section 19.8 which covers appendixes, glossaries, bibliographies, indexes, etc. Have copies of: Various books containing appendixes, glossaries, bibliographies, indexes, etc. CONTENT PRESENTATION AND LEARNER PARTICIPATION As a class the students will read and discuss LOC Manual: Lesson 19.8 about appendixes, glossaries, bibliographies, indexes, etc. Some reminders to the students: When such items are shown in print they should be reproduced in braille the sponsoring agency directs otherwise. Answer: unless. Remember to ask the agency for a copy of their specs or preferences when you sign a contract. Can you explain some other rules for appendixes, glossaries, bibliographies, indexes, etc.? Each one begins a new braille page with the heading as shown in print centered on the third line. Leave a blank line to separate the heading from the following text. Where should you go for the correct braille formats to be used for glossaries and indexes? Answer: Consult Braille Formats. Books containing such end matter are transcribed using -style pagination. Answer: textbook. Braille Module 67-8

The instructor will pass around copies of books that have appendixes, glossaries, bibliographies, indexes, etc. for the students to view. F. End-of-Volume Book Indication (15 minutes) Objective BS67.6: Know about the end-of-volume and end-of-book indication. PREINSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITIES The instructor will be familiar with section 19.9 which covers end-of-volume and end-ofbook indication. CONTENT PRESENTATION AND LEARNER PARTICIPATION As a class the students will read and discuss LOC Manual: Lesson 19.9 about end-ofvolume and end-of-book indication. Some reminders to the students: Does the Library of Congress require an end-of-volume indication on the certification manuscript? Answer: Yes. What about other agencies? Answer: They may not have this requirement. Once again it will be very beneficial to you to ask in advance for the agencies specs. Indication of the volume ending should appear on the last of the volume whether that page contains text, an author's notes, index, or any other material. Answer: page. What are the words you will use? Answer: The words END OF VOLUME followed by the appropriate volume number (such as END OF VOLUME 4) are centered below the last line of braille on the last page of each volume except the final one. Is the final volume treated the same? Answer: No, in the final volume, only the words THE END are used. What about blank lines? Answer: Whenever possible, one blank line should precede the end-of-volume indication. But what if a volume ends on line 24 of the page? Answer: Line 25 should be used for this purpose. When a volume ends on line 25, the end-of-volume indicator may be placed on that line so long as there is room for three blank cells between the end of the text and the end-of-volume indicator. If this is not possible, the last line of braille text must be carried over to another page. G. Review and Test (1 hour) Objective BS67.7: Review and test over preliminary/text pages. PREINSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITIES The instructor will be familiar with the Lesson 19.3-19.9. Braille Module 67-9

You will need copies of: Lesson 19.3-19.9: Test (67.G.1) and Answers to Lesson 19.3-19.9: Test (67.G.2). CONTENT PRESENTATION AND LEARNER PARTICIPATION Review Lesson 19.3-19.9 of the LOC Manual. The review is designed to prepare the students for the test. The instructor is to go over each section with emphases on areas that will be on the test. Allow the students to ask any questions pertaining to the context of LOC Manual: Lesson 19.3-19.9. Pass out the Lesson 19.3-19.9: Test (67.G.1) to each student. This test consists of filling in the blanks and True or False. An answer key is included. Allow for time to go over the test and answer questions. The expected outcome of the test will help both the instructor and the students to understand the students strengths and weaknesses. This will allow them to work together to strengthen the students weaknesses in any area. ASSESSMENT This test is necessary for the students and the instructor to determine the knowledge acquired over Lesson: 19.3-19.9 of the Instruction Manual for Braille Transcribing Fifth Edition, 2009. It is expected that the students will fully grasp the rules for text pages, summarize the order of preliminary/text pages, book broken into units, chapter titles, volume size/division, appendixes, glossaries, bibliographies, indexes, etc., and end-ofvolume/end-of-book indication and the rules concerning the usages. H. Play the Game: Family Feud (2 hours) Objective BS67.8: Play the Game: Family Feud. PREINSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITIES The instructor will be familiar with the game: Family Feud. You will need a copy of: Family Feud (67.H.1). This is a list of the questions (regular and fast money) for the instructor. The instructor will need to read the Family Feud Presentation Software Instructions.doc. These instructions will tell how the game is actually played on the computer. The instructor will need to train someone to be on the computer to execute the program. Braille Module 67-10

The information the instructor needs is in the two folders named: Game 1 and Game 2 listed above. The Game (1 or 2) Flashcards can be printed out on cardstock paper and cut out so that they can be comfortably held in the hand. These will be used to play the game. The answers are numbered. The number following the answer is the number of people who chose that answer. The Questions Game (1 or 2) is the list of questions in each game. The instructor will need a copy of this for reference. The actual game is Family Feud 4.0.exe. The items labeled Q1.txt, Q2.txt, fmoney.txt etc. are for the.exe files to make the program work. Please do NOT open these files. They are interlinked to the program. You will need to set up the computer and overhead projector and train someone to use the program. CONTENT PRESENTATION AND LEARNER PARTICIPATION The instructor will divide the class into two groups and have the groups come up with a name. They will go into the Game 1 folder and open up Family Feud 4.0.exe file. When this round is complete you may have time to play Game 2. ENJOY! Braille Module 67-11

14. Following the braille preliminary pages, the text pages are brailled in the order in which they appear in print. So, the first page of text may be the first page of an introduction, acknowledgments, a preface or it might be the first page of the first chapter. True False 15. There are only two pages in a braille volume that do not carry a running head the title page and the first page of text. True False 16. In every braille volume, starting on a new braille page, instead of a running head on the first page of text, place the complete book title, subtitle (if any), and series name (if any). True False 17. The unabbreviated book title is brailled in full capitals and centered on the first line or lines. True False 33. If the total number of braille pages exceeds a hundred and fifteen, divide the book into three volumes. True False 34. Because of the bulk of a braille volume, division should always favor smaller volumes. True False 35. The variation between any two volumes in the same book should not exceed fifteen pages. True False 36. Remember to include the preliminary pages in the count. True False 37. Consult EBAE for the correct braille formats to be used for glossaries and indexes. True False 38. The Library of Congress requires an end-of-volume indication on the certification manuscript. Other agencies may not have this requirement. True False 39. Indication of the volume ending should appear on the last page of the volume whether that page contains text, an author's notes, index, or any other material. True False 40. The words END OF VOLUME followed by the appropriate volume number (such as THE END OF VOLUME 4) are centered below the last line of braille on the last page of each volume except the final one. True False 41. In the final volume, the words THE END OF TRANSCRIPTION are used. True False 42. Whenever possible, two blank lines should precede the end-of-volume indication. True False 43. If a volume ends on line 24 of the page, line 25 should be used for the end-ofvolume indication. True False 67.G.1 Braille Module 67-15

True False To determine the order of braille preliminary and text pages follow these steps: 19.4 45. Look carefully at all of the print pages that precede the start of the first chapter and determine which should be considered the beginning of "text" pages in braille. True False 46. Note which of the items in the list in 19.2 are pertinent to your book and list them on a sheet of paper in the order transcribed. True False 47. Note all other print preliminary pages prior to the beginning of text (if any), and continue listing each of those in the order in which they appear in the print book. True False 48. If a narrative piece, such as a preface, is located before a table of contents, transpose the two, but do not add to or change the contents page. The preface then becomes the first page of text. Highlight True or False. 13. In textbook-style pagination, Arabic numbering starts on the first page of text and continues throughout all volumes, including any end matter such as an epilogue or information about the author. True False, in literary-style pagination 19.3a 14. Following the braille preliminary pages, the text pages are brailled in the order in which they appear in print. So, the first page of text may be the first page of an introduction, acknowledgments, a preface or it might be the first page of the first chapter. True False 19.3b 15. There are only two pages in a braille volume that do not carry a running head the title page and the first page of text. True False 19.3b 16. In every braille volume, starting on a new braille page, instead of a running head on the first page of text, place the complete book title, subtitle (if any), and series name (if any). True False 19.3b 17. The unabbreviated book title is brailled in full capitals and centered on the first line or lines. If the book has a subtitle, it is placed on the next line with only the first letter of the first word and other principal words capitalized. True False 19.3b 18. When a preface, foreword, prologue, introduction, or author's personal acknowledgments are shown in print, if there is a heading in print, in braille it is centered and use double capitalization. True False, print capitalization is followed 19.3c 19. When a preface, foreword, prologue, introduction, or author's personal acknowledgments are shown in print, ignore special typefaces in headings unless needed for emphasis or distinction. True False 19.3c 20. Chapter titles are treated as centered headings. True False 19.6 21. In chapter titles follow print for capitalization and roman or Arabic numerals. True False 19.6 22. A long title should not be divided and brailled, centered, on consecutive lines. True False, should be divided 19.6 23. For the heading at least two blank cells must be left at the beginning and ending of each line. True False, three blank cells 19.6 24. When placed on one line, the chapter number comes first followed by a space and the title regardless of print placement. True False 19.6 25. If any chapter heading in a book is too long to be placed on the same line with the chapter number, then all chapters should have the chapter number centered on one line and the chapter title centered on the next. True False 19.6 67.G.2 Braille Module 67-18

26. Start the first chapter of a book on a new braille page. True False 19.6 27. When following chapters end in the middle of a braille page, the next chapter should start on that same page as long as there is room for the chapter heading with its preceding and following blank lines and at least two lines of braille text. True False, at least one line of braille text 19.6 28. When a new chapter starts at the top of a braille page, a blank line is left between the running head and the chapter heading. True False 19.6 29. When a braille volume ends in the middle of a chapter, the first page of text in the following volume should carry, first, the full title of the book (no running head), followed by a blank line and the centered chapter heading followed by the word (cont.). True False 19.6 30. A division should be made at a point where there is an illogical break in context or thought. True False, a logical break 19.7 31. Do not divide in the middle of a paragraph, no matter how long that paragraph may be. True False 19.7 32. The optimal size of a braille volume is one hundred pages, but may vary between ninety and one hundred and ten pages (a page, in this instance, refers to an actual piece of paper, not to braille page numbers). True False 19.7 33. If the total number of braille pages exceeds a hundred and fifteen, divide the book into three volumes. True False, two volumes 19.7 34. Because of the bulk of a braille volume, division should always favor smaller volumes. True False 19.7 35. The variation between any two volumes in the same book should not exceed fifteen pages. True False 19.7 36. Remember to include the preliminary pages in the count. True False 19.7 37. Consult EBAE for the correct braille formats to be used for glossaries and indexes. True False, Braille Formats 19.8 38. The Library of Congress requires an end-of-volume indication on the certification manuscript. Other agencies may not have this requirement. True False 19.9 39. Indication of the volume ending should appear on the last page of the volume whether that page contains text, an author's notes, index, or any other material. True False 19.9 40. The words END OF VOLUME followed by the appropriate volume number (such as THE END OF VOLUME 4) are centered below the last line of braille on the last page of each volume except the final one. True False 19.9 67.G.2 Braille Module 67-19

41. In the final volume, the words THE END OF TRANSCRIPTION are used. True False, THE END 19.9 42. Whenever possible, two blank lines should precede the end-of-volume indication. True False, one blank line 19.9 43. If a volume ends on line 24 of the page, line 25 should be used for the end-ofvolume indication. True False 19.9 44. When a volume ends on line 25, the end-of-volume indicator may be placed on that line so long as there is room for six blank cells between the end of the text and the end-of-volume indicator. True False, three blank cells 19.9 To determine the order of braille preliminary and text pages follow these steps: 19.4 45. Look carefully at all of the print pages that precede the start of the first chapter and determine which should be considered the beginning of "text" pages in braille. True False 46. Note which of the items in the list in 19.2 are pertinent to your book and list them on a sheet of paper in the order transcribed. True False, order prescribed 47. Only narrative pieces preceding the table of contents should be moved. The order and format of the braille version should be as close to the print copy as possible. True False 49. Consecutively number all items that follow the beginning of text in Roman numerals, including poetry, epigraphs, etc. True False, Arabic 50. Do not ignore print pages that simply repeat the title.
