AACTA AWARD FOR BEST ASIAN FILM Process and Eligibility Criteria PART 1: PROCESS 1. Entry into competition 1.1. Films from Tier One or Tier Two Asian countries (see definition under Part 2, 3.1), that meet one or more of the Eligibility Criteria (see Eligibility Criteria in Part 2) will be considered for entry into competition. 1.2. Invitations to enter into Formal Competition will be sent to select eligible films at AACTA s discretion. All invitations will be extended in June via email. 1.3. All films that are invited and agree to pay the Entry Fee will then enter Formal Competition. 1.4. The Formal Competition List will comprise a total of 27 films that meet Regional Quotas (outlined below) based on the average number of films from each eligible country distributed in Australia for paid admission. Regional Quotas: China: nine Chinese films may be included in Formal Competition. India: nine Indian films may be included in Formal Competition. Japan: three Japanese films may be included in Formal Competition. South Korea: three South Korean films may be included in Formal Competition. Tier Two countries: three films in total from Tier Two countries may be included in Formal Competition. 2. Preliminary Selection Committee 2.1. Three Preliminary Selection Committees will be appointed at AACTA s discretion to determine the Nominees that progress from Formal Competition: The Chinese Preliminary Selection Committee will determine three Nominees from the nine Chinese films in Formal Competition. The Indian Preliminary Selection Committee will determine three Nominees from the nine Indian films in Formal Competition. The South Korean, Japanese and Tier Two Preliminary Selection Committee will determine: (ii) (iii) One Nominee from the three South Korean films in Formal Competition; One Nominee from the three Japanese films in Formal Competition; and One Nominee from the three Tier Two films in Formal Competition, if determined to be meritorious. 2.2. Preliminary Selection Committees will each be made up of 9 members. Preliminary Selection Committee members will be invited to particpate based on their outstanding knowledge of the Asian film industry and their contribution toward the appreciation and promotion of the Asian Film Industry in Australia, and in particular, films from the country of their respective appointed Committee. 2.3. The Preliminary Selection Committee will have access to all films in Formal Competition from the country/s they are judging via AACTA TV. 3. Nominated Films 3.1. Nominees for the AACTA Award for Best Asian Film will be announced in October 2017 via press release. 3.2. Each nominated film will receive four complimentary invitations to attend the AACTA Awards Ceremony on Wednesday 6 December 2017 in Sydney where the winner will be announced. These invitations are for the strict use of the nominated film s Producers, Directors, Writers or Actors only. 4. Grand Jury 4.1. The Best Asian Film Grand Jury will be made up of nine exceptional and highly regarded film industry leaders with extensive careers and experience from around Asia and Australia. 4.2. Members of the Best Asian Film Grand Jury will have access to all nominated films via AACTA TV during the Viewing Period (1 September 17 September 2017). 4.3. The official Grand Jury meeting will take place on September 19 and will be appointed a suitably qualified and impartial moderator to chair the meeting. 4.4. At the end of the official Grand Jury meeting, the jurors will determine one Winner via a confidential vote. 5. Award Recipient 5.1. The recipient of the AACTA Award for Best Asian Film will be announced at the 7th AACTA Awards presented by Foxtel Ceremony on Wednesday 6 December 2017 at The Star Event Centre in Sydney. 5.2. The Award will be Awarded to the winning film s Producer/s. Page 2 of 5

PART 2: ELIGIBILITY To be eligible, a Feature Film must: 1. Be a film consisting of a dramatised story of at least 70 minutes duration. 2. Be in English or in a language other than English. 3. In order to be eligible a Feature Film must: 3.1. Have a country of origin from one of the following Asian countries: Tier One: China (ii) India (iii) Japan (iv) South Korea Tier Two: Bangladesh (ii) Bhutan (iii) Cambodia (iv) Indonesia (v) Laos (vi) Malaysia (vii) Myanman / Burma (viii) Nepal (ix) Pakistan (x) Papua New Guinea (xi) Philippines (xii) Singapore (xiii) Sri Lanka (xiv) Thailand (xv) Vietnam AND fulfil one or more of the following criteria: 3.2. Be an official co-production between Australia and the respective Country of Origin and have been publicly released during the Release Period (1 September 2016 31 August 2017). Current Asian Co-Production signatories are: Page 3 of 5

China; or South Korea. 3.3. Have won a listed Major Prize at an approved international film festival: (f) (g) (h) (j) (k) (l) (m) (n) (o) Asian Film Awards: Best Film Beijing International Film Festival: Tiantan Award for Best Feature Film Berlinale: Golden Bear Busan International Film Festival*: NETPAC Award, New Currents Award Cairo International Film Festival: Golden Pyramid Cannes Film Festival: Palme d Or, Prix Un Certain Regard Hong Kong International Film Festival: Fipresci Jury Prize International Film Festival of India*: Golden Peacock Award for Best Film, Special Jury Award International Film Festival of Kerala: Golden Crow Pheasant Award, Fipresci Award, NETPAC Award Locarno International Film Festival: Golden Leopare National Film Awards India: Golden Lotus Award for Best Feature Film San Sebastian International Film Festival: Golden Shell Shanghai International Film Festival: Golden Goblet Award for Best Feature Film, SIFF Asian New Talent Award Best Film, SIFF Grand Jury Prize Tokyo International Film Festival*: Tokyo Grand Prize, Best Asian Future Film Award Venice International Film Festival: Golden Lion 3.4. Be publicly exhibited during the Release Period (1 September 2016 31 August 2017) for paid admission at a commercial cinema in a minimum of two Australian Capital cities with one city being Melbourne or Sydney for a run of at least seven consecutive days, grossing within the top three (in accumulated Box Office AUD) of films from that country (Tier One films only). 3.5. Be the Official Oscars Foreign Film entry for the respective country (Tier One films only). 3.6. Be selected by an Australian film distributor (one film per distributor) specialising in the distribution of Asian films, including but not limited to the below distributors: Page 4 of 5

Pay an entry fee of AUD $500 (incl GST) WAIVED IN YEAR 1 2. Permission for AACTA to host of the film on AACTA TV during the Viewing Period (1 September 17 September 2017). If the film is in a language other than English, an English subtitled copy of the film must be made available. 3. Provide AACTA with a film clip up to one minute in length for marketing and event requirements, with no fees. Page 5 of 5
