Preace orn in Milaukee, Wisconsin, Edna rida Pietsch (189 1982) ould send her entire career there as an integral art o the city s musical lie. Having studied both iano and comosition, she as a iano teacher to generations, and her comositions ere requently layed, ith her orchestral orks garnering erormances by the Chicago Symhony Orchestra and Milaukee Symhony Orchestra. Her renon and inluence as a comoser in Wisconsin as such that the state honored her as the dean o Wisconsin comosers in 1981. With a comositional style irmly rooted in nineteenthcentury Romanticism, Pietsch as at odds ith the avantgarde riting that as in vogue or most o her lie, and her comositions ere not idely disseminated beyond Wisconsin. The manuscrits or to viola comositions by Pietsch are located in the Edna Pietsch Collection, Mills Music Library, University o WisconsinMadison: a singlemovement Viola Concerto and this Andante Cantabile, or viola and iano. Neither ork is dated, though the Viola Concerto aears in sources as early as 1956. This ne AVS edition o the Andante Cantabile is based on our sources rom the Pietsch Collection: a iano score in encil (ith the viola art notated alternatingly in bass and treble cle), a air coy iano score in ink, a viola art in encil, and a air coy viola art in ink. The sources contain multile discreancies, and this edition reresents the best attemt to reconcile those dierences; editorial changes have been made ithout comment.
