Band/Instrumental Music, Grades 9-12 Course Description: The Band program is a full year course offered to students of varying levels and talents, and with previous band experience, the opportunity to participate in the Concert/Marching Band. The Bands perform at varsity football games, parades, pep rallies, graduation, winter and spring concerts and various other performances throughout the school year. Jazz ensemble and wind ensembles are offered to students by audition. Course Rationale: In every culture music plays a role in the rituals of society and in the personal lives of its citizens. Modern technologies and mass communication media have brought music to a prominence and made it readily accessible to all audiences. The Band offers an opportunity for mutual effort and success. The knowledge that the group s successful performance is reliant on the practice and perfection of each individual s contribution is an asset to the family, the school, and later in the workplace. Advanced research in brain development show that music trains the brain for higher forms of thinking. Music improves spatial intelligence, the ability to visualize the world accurately, which translates into complex math and engineering skills. Music training can enhance a child s ability to reason.
