Instrumental Music - Concert Band, Jazz Band, and Guitar Tuesday Music Classes with Mr. Cover are held in Modesto at Hart Ransom School 3930 Shoemake Ave. The Band Room is next to the new cafeteria building. Look for signs the first week of school. Thursday Music Classes with Mr. Cover are held in Hickman at Hickman Charter School 13306 4 th St. The Band Room is Room 84, next to the Annex building. You are welcome to attend either location. The same material is covered each week. As we approach our concert dates, students must rehearse together as one ensemble prior to the concert. Check the website or watch for flyers for double rehearsals the two weeks prior to the concert! Sign up for Band and Guitar classes online at www.mcovermusic.com under the Charter Music tab. Band begins September 2nd, 2014 Recorders 3rd/4th Grade Recorders Tuesday OR Thursday, 9:00 9:30 am (time changes to 9:30 10:00 am in October) The recorder is a wind instrument that sounds similar to the flute. The recorder is used as a Pre Band instrument to introduce students to music notation, reading and performance. Students will be taught proper sound production, notes and fingerings, ensemble playing and performance preparation. This class is meant for students in grades 3 & 4 if they are too small to be in band. This is a group participation class and the pace of the class may be too challenging for students below 3 rd grade. Concerts are a required part of the class. Beginning Band 4th Grade and above Beginning Band Woodwinds Tuesday OR Thursday, 9:30 10:00 am (time changes in October) A woodwind instrument is one of the following: flute, oboe, clarinet or saxophone. Students will be introduced to proper sound production, breath support, notes and fingerings, rhythm, music theory, ensemble playing and performance practice. Concerts are a required part of this class. For students in grades 5 8 or by permission of the teacher younger students are allowed at the discretion of Mr. Cover. Students will be introduced to proper sound production, breath support, notes and fingerings, rhythm, music theory, ensemble playing and performance practice. Concerts are a required part of this class. For students in grades 5 8 or by permission of the teacher younger students are allowed at the discretion of Mr. Cover. Instructor Mr. Matthew Cover 874 9070 ext. 284 or mcover@hickmanschools.org Beginning Band Percussion Tuesday OR Thursday, 10:30 11:00 am (time changes in October) Not only will the student be learning the primary instrument of the snare drum but also other percussion instruments like the bass drum, cymbals, tambourine, triangle, and woodblock to be a well rounded percussion student. I can only accept 6 drummers in Beginning Band. An audition is required to be a percussionist. Students not accepted in percussion can elect a woodwind or brass instrument instead. Concerts are a required part of this class. For students in grades 5 8 or by permission of the teacher younger students are allowed at the discretion of Mr. Cover. Intermediate Band for students in 2nd and/or 3rd year of band Intermediate Band Tuesday OR Thursday 11:30 am 12:30 pm There are four prerequisites for Intermediate Band and they are: 1) having a band instrument, 2) having one or more year s experience on your instrument, 3) being committed to attend band rehearsal each week, and 4) permission from Mr. Cover (a playing audition if new to our school). Students will continue to learn new notes and fingerings, rhythm, and music theory, as well as reviewing proper sound production, ensemble playing and performance practice. Concerts are a required part of this class. For students in grades 5 8 or by permission of the teacher. There are three prerequisites for Charter Advanced Band and they are: 1) having two or more years of experience on your instrument, 2) being committed to attend every band rehearsal each week, and 3) permission from Mr. Cover (a playing audition if new to our school). Students will continue to learn new notes and fingerings, rhythms, and music theory, as well as reviewing proper sound production, ensemble playing and performance practice. Advanced Band is the advanced ensemble in charter school. All students are expected to learn their music to performance level quality. Concerts are a required part of this class. Jazz Band for 3rd year + band students Jazz Band Tuesday or Thursday, 1:45 2:15 pm For students in grades 6 8 or by permission of the teacher. There are four prerequisites for Jazz Band and they are: 1) having two or more years of experience on your instrument, 2) being enrolled in either the intermediate or advanced band, 3) being committed to attend every band rehearsal each week, 4) permission from Mr. Cover (a playing audition if new to our school). Students will learn the elements and performance styles of various styles of jazz music as well as how to improvise for solos. Students will continue to learn new notes and fingerings, rhythms, and music theory as it applies to jazz music, as well as reviewing proper sound production, ensemble playing and performance practice. Guitar offered on Wednesdays: There are two levels of Guitar class offered on campus: Beginning Guitar from 9:00 am 9:50 am Intermediate Guitar from 10:00 am 10:50 am Beginning guitar students need to bring an acoustic guitar, a 3 ring binder for handouts, guitar picks, and a pencil. A case is recommended for your guitar. In our first year we learn many of the basic chords, strumming patterns, and tablature notation. Intermediate guitar is for students who have completed the Beginning Guitar class. For students in grades 5 8 or by permission of the teacher. Keyboarding & Strings Piano Keyboarding Lab Wednesdays beginning 9/10/2014, Hickman Charter Campus, Rm 83; Classes are 45 minutes and start every hour on the hour. For students in 4 th 8 th grade. Each 40 minute class uses electronic keyboards and focuses on learning and application of musical concepts. Students as young as 4 th grade will eventually be able to read music in both clefs, understand rhythm and meter, and experience expression and articulation of all kinds of music. After the 40 minute class, students can choose to get assistance with individual piano instruction for approximately five minutes. These students will be directed to purchase specific piano books and need to practice and work on lessons at home. If you choose to participate in this extra 5 minute program, you must have either a piano or an electronic keyboard available. All classes meet on Wednesdays only. 9:00 9:40 am: Advanced Keyboarding for students in third year of keyboarding and above 10:00 10:40 am: Beginning Keyboarding 11:00 11:40 am: Intermediate Keyboarding (students taking second year of keyboarding) 1:00 1:40 pm: Beginning Keyboarding * Times may have to be adjusted depending on enrollment. Strings/Violin Weekly lessons are offered in a small group setting in Room 82 on the Hickman Charter Campus. The schedule listed below is tentative based on enrollment. Classes may need to be adjusted in order to accommodate numbers. Placement will be determined by the teacher. Children's Chorus, grades K-8 Hughson Union High School Theatre, 7419 East Whitmore Avenue, Hughson, CA 95326 Chorus begins October 7, 8, or 9, depending on which day you choose to attend. *Please note Children's Chorus is a year long class. Children s Chorus resumes after winter break on January 6, 7, or 8. Students will learn to read and write music; express themselves through song, drama, and dance; have a great time performing, sharing, serving and socializing with others; and develop greater self confidence and self worth. Hickman Charter School is committed to providing your child one of the finest music education experiences in the state. Since we meet only once each week, each child will be provided with a practice tape and workbook, and music to practice at home. They will have a lot of fun singing and learning at home. When your child has finished all eight levels of music at Hickman, they will be leaving with a music education on the level of a second year college music student. They are going to sound wonderful! There is not a class size limit for choir, so when you register for Children s Chorus, you are enrolled. However, you must complete the registration procedures in order to attend class. All classes for the week of December 2 4 will be held on Tuesday, December 2nd from 12:35 2:35 pm. Come at your regular class time. Tuesday is a tech rehearsal for the concert that night. Every child has a part in this concert. Concert dress is your nice clothes (you do not need to dress up for the tech rehearsal). Girls: a dress you feel lovely in. Boys: slacks and shirt (tie if you have one). Look clean and radiant! After this rehearsal, chorus classes won t meet again until the week of January 6 8, 2015. You do not need to re register in order to attend Children s Chorus goes from October through the end of March. Rest Home/Service Project Performance (location to be announced) Wednesday, January 21, 2015, 1:20 pm All students who have class on Tuesday and Thursday need to come perform on Wednesday. The performance/service will last about 45 minutes. You are welcome to come and enjoy this with the residents. They LOVE to visit with the children and their parents! Spring concert: Tuesday, March 24, 2015, 7:00 pm PARENTS, please be aware! All classes for the week of March 14 26 will be held in the Hughson High Theater on Tuesday, March 24 th at your normal time. This will be a technical rehearsal for the concert that night. Every child has a part in this concert. We will practice with the lights, sound, and children from other classes at this time. You do not need to dress up for the technical rehearsal. Save your good clothes for the performance. This will be the last time we meet for choir this school year. Information for new and returning students about curriculum pick up: New students in grades 3 8 need to go to the Annex before the first day of class and pick up Excellence in Music, Vol. 1. All other students pick up the volume you have graduated into. Honor Choir Important Info!! Only students who have been in choir for at least one year and have successfully passed Level 1 and 1.5 of the Excellence in Music course are eligible to be in Honor Choir. New students from other schools who have the music theory background to Level 1.5 may audition for Honor Choir by calling Mr. Thompson and arranging a time (209) 247 9843. Honor Choir will start earlier in the school year than the rest of the Children s Chorus classes. 12
