SEIBA 7-12 HONOR BAND & HS HONOR JAZZ BAND Auditions: January 9, 2010 Festival: January 23, 2010 Entry Deadline: December 2, 2009 $5.00 per student Penalty Deadline: December 7, 2009 $7.00 per student **Entries postmarked AFTER December 7 th will be accepted with a $30 fee per student.** Honor Band Chairs: Audra Bailey JH/MS Michael Albarracin - HS Pleasant Valley JH, Le Claire West Liberty HS, West Liberty Rich Medd - JAZZ West High, Iowa City Honor Band and Honor Jazz Band Auditions will be held at Fairfield High School on Saturday, January 9, 2010. The SEIBA Honor Band and Jazz Band Festival will be held on Saturday, January 23, 2010 at Iowa City West High School. Jim Edgeton, Fairfield High School, will be the audition site chairperson and Rob Medd, Iowa City West High School, will be the festival site chairperson. The live audition for the Honor Jazz Band will be held the same day in Fairfield. Students will be allowed to audition for both the jazz band and concert bands. However, if selected for both, they will forfeit their opportunity to participate in the concert band. Please read the following information carefully. Also, please verify with your students that they will not have any conflicts and can participate for the ENTIRE day of the festival. SEIBA HONOR BAND 1. The Senior High Honor band is made up of grades 9-12 and the Junior High Honor Band is made up of grades 7-8. Ninth graders may audition for Junior High Band if they are a member of their school s Junior High Band. Audition cards should specify Junior or Senior High. 2. Each Senior High and each Junior High may bring 15 students or up to 10% of their school s band enrollment, which ever is greatest. 3. Every school sending 5 or more students to audition (i.e. 5 Junior High or 5 Senior High) will be guaranteed one student in the band for which those 5 auditioned. The school director and the festival chairperson will select the student. 4. All students entering must audition - even if there is only one entry for a section. 5. Junior High percussionists must audition on all three instruments (snare, mallets, & timpani). 6. Top 8 th grade players may be selected for the IBA Honor Band based on their SEIBA audition and the quotas determined by IBA.

7. Piccolo players will be selected from the first flute section on festival day. The first flute folder will also contain the piccolo music. First flute players should prepare both the flute and the piccolo music. 8. No scale sheets and no photo copies are allowed in the audition. 9. Complete and send the following Entry Audition Form. All entries must be postmarked by December 2, 2009. A $7 penalty fee will be charged to each entry received between December 2 and December 7, 2009. A $30 penalty fee will be charge to each entry received after December 7, 2009. 10. Send JH & HS entry audition forms and checks (no cash) payable to SEIBA to Audra Bailey. Please send Jazz entries to Rich Medd. AUDITION REQUIREMENTS High School: Same as All State. Adjudicators will be using the All State Ballot. Junior High: Scales: Students must be able to perform major scales through 4 sharps and 4 flats (including C Major) at a minimum speed of quarter note = 88. A metronome will be used to establish tempo only and not during performance. These scales should be played 1, 2, or 3 octaves as accessible to the student. Scales must be all tongued ascending and all slurred descending or all slurred ascending and all tongued descending. Students must perform the chromatic scale over the complete range of the students ability without a speed, rhythm pattern, or articulation requirement. All major scales must be memorized and performed in this pattern. Etudes: The following etude material is from the Rubank Advanced Method Book, Vol. 1 (Melodic Interpretation section, top part only) Flute #14 pp.34-35, #19 p.39 Oboe #3 p.21, #23 pp.40-41 Bassoon #3 p.20 Bb Clarinet #14 p.35, #19 p.42 Alto/Bass Clarinet #4 p.14, #5 pp.26-27 (Intro to the Alto/Bass Clarinet) Alto/Tenor/Bari Sax #15 pp.32-33, #24 p.42 Trumpet #20 p.36 (m.1-41 ONLY), #25 p.43 Horn #24 p.39, #25 pp.39-40 Trombone/Euphonium #9 p.25, #13 p.29(only) Tuba #2 p.26 (ONLY), #17 p.35 Snare - Rudimental (double bounce) roll, Orchestral (buzz) roll, Flams (hand to hand). If you are unsure about judging, perhaps consider the following: become a shadow judge for a year (sit in with a judge for an hour or so), alternate years with other directors in your district, or volunteer as a rehearsal assistant on the day of Honor Band! Please keep in mind that if you are sending students to audition, you may be required to take your turn judging as was passed by the membership at the winter meeting 2005. 2010 DISTRICT HONOR JAZZ BAND Entry Deadline: December 2, 2009 Penalty Deadline: December 7, 2009 Auditions: January 9, 2010 at Fairfield H.S. Festival: January 23, 2010 at Iowa City West H.S. Selection Information 1. One Jazz Band Classes 1A -4A 2. The event will coincide with the district honor band festival at Iowa City West High School on Saturday, January 23, 2010. 3. There is no limit on the number of auditions per school. 4.. Students auditioning for the district jazz band are also encouraged to audition for the district honor band. If a school is planning to send 15 students to district honor band auditions in Fairfield, and two of those students also audition for the jazz band and are selected for both groups, they will forfeit their opportunity to play in the concert band. Jazz Audition Procedure 1. The audition will consist of the following: A. Major Scales as required by the All-State jazz audition. (Memorization not required). B. Chromatic scale over the range of the instrument. (Memorization is required). Drums will play: - Swing at quarter note = 180 - Bossa Nova at quarter note = 120 - Funk Grove at quarter note = 96 C. Sight reading D. Improvisation - 2 choruses of Bb or F blues - 1 chorus of 32 bar Rhythm Changes in Bb (Optional) - Drummers will perform a short solo 2. Students will be allowed to audition for both the jazz band and concert bands. However, if selected for both, they will not be allowed to participate in the concert band. 3. The following CDs will be used for the improvisation portion of the audition: - Aebersold Volume 47 for Bb Rhythm Changes - Aebersold Volume 1, Track 7 or 8 for the Blues
