PROGRAM NOTES: This iece was commissioned by the League o American Orchestras and American Comosers Orchestra with the generous suort o the Virginia B. Toulmin Foundation. The title o this iece reaches back across the Paciic Ocean and into the heart o two memories I have o my homeland. As a child I grew u on Tamborine Mountain (Queensland) where the dirt is a vibrant volcanic red. I was more use to seeing my eet stained with this color than having them in shoes. The second memory is o the torrential downours we would exerience during the summers and o alling aslee to the sound o it elting against the corrugated iron roo. The rhythm o these rain showers, in my recollection amliied by the material o the roo, would luctuate between violent hammering and delicate attering. This iece is most o all about reconstructing memories. These memories hinge around strong sensory moments o my childhood and I have aimed to give them clear motivic/thematic lie within the music. A wonderul henomena that occurs in the recalling o memories is our ability to maniulate and alter the way we may have originally remembered these things the way I remember my dirt red toes the very same evening I washed them clean (erhas I was annoyed that they were still slightly stained red even though I d scrubbed them or ages), will be comletely dierent to how I remember them now (as symbolizing un, reedom, color, warmth, childhood). So the trajectory o the motives/themes across this iece exlore an array o ossibilities and orms in how they can be remembered, recalled, and readjusted sometimes more with the methodical mind o my adult-sel, other times with what I imagine is my care-ree inner child. - Melody Eötvös 2015 v
