ARTISTIC DIRECTOR S WELCOME The Kingfisher Theater is Rochester s only professional acting company with the mission to provide a sanctuary for growth through the collaboration of both established and emerging theatre artists. Our aim is to stage classic texts that have stood the test of time, to provide a fertile training ground for new artists, and to bring the form in Rochester to new heights. This season is an ambitious one, starting with the show you re about to see: August Strindberg s thrilling masterwork, Creditors. In January we re proud to present, once again, our own The Devil, the Witch, and the Blacksmith, by company members Amy Canfield and Kevin Dedes. For this project, we re thrilled to have invited our first guest director, Graydon Gund of New York City. This spring, we celebrate the upcoming Centennial of the passing of the 19 th Amendment with Elizabeth Robin s Votes for Women! Directed by our guest director Connor Graham of Buffalo. We thank you for being a part of our second theatrical season, and hope you ll stick around for years to come as we continue to dive into Classic Plays in New Ways. - Kevin Dedes Artistic Director, The Kingfisher Theater 2

DIRECTOR S NOTE At the Kingfisher Theater, we find our inspiration and the first steps on each season's journey in classic plays. As romantic as this notion may be, the potential problem that arises is that much of classic theater is written by old white men. Yawn. While we are committed to finding and producing the works of nonmainstream voices (last season we staged Sir Patient Fancy by Aphra Behn, England's first female professional playwright), sometimes we feel the need to turn the classic voices in on themselves. August Strindberg is a Swedish playwright well-known for his depictions of the very traditionally gendered relationships between men and women. He is often labeled as sexist by today's audiences. The reality, however, is that Strindberg was writing about the truth of his time--his truth, the one that he was exposed to and entrenched in. We at Kingfisher are now doing what we do best. We are telling our truth. This production of Strindberg's Creditors is cast with two women making up the married couple. Unlike in our inaugural production of Oedipus Rex where Kristy Barr portrayed the Greek king as a man, Tekla and Ada (named Adolph in Strindberg's original) are both women played by women. This simple choice forces some self-examination on the text. Are men and women so different? Are all women alike? In short, how has our understanding of gender and relationships changed since Creditors was first penned? Perhaps a great deal--but then again, perhaps not so much. - Jessica Thurston Director of Marketing, The Kingfisher Theater Director, Creditors 4
