We encourage you to subscribe early so you will not miss a single note! We invite you to become a member of the Conductor s Circle to enjoy special benefits while ensuring that the Golden Isles community continues to Experience the Excitement of world class music and musicians. You, our loyal patrons, deserve nothing less! Linda Muir President, Board of Directors This season, the orchestra will perform a wide variety of music featuring women, personal triumph, and performance excellence. The first two concerts demonstrate how composers are inspired by women to write masterpieces based on them, promising us two enchanting and lively evenings! We are delighted to have nationally recognized soprano, Maria Valdes, with us for Opening Night when she will sing two lovely operatic arias from Puccini and Tchaikovsky. It will be a joy to showcase several of our principal musicians when they step forward as soloists for the February concert. The orchestra will close the season in April with the sweetest of love songs from Cinema Paradiso, and the triumph expressed in Rachmaninoff s second symphony. The 2017-2018 concert season s repertoire is a musical poem of love, passion, and triumph, performed at its best by our exceptional musicians. Enjoy! Maestro Luis Haza Music Director/Conductor
Monday October 2, 2017 Brunswick High School Auditorium 8:00 p.m. BEETHOVEN Overture to Fidelio, Op 72 PUCCINI La Boheme, Act One Si, mi chiamano Mimi SCHUBERT Lady of the Lake, Ave Maria TCHAIKOVSKY Eugene Onegin Tatiana s Letter Scene TCHAIKOVSKY Francesca da Rimini Op 32 Andante Lugubre- Allegro vivo Experience Love Stories when the 2017-2018 concert season opens with musical tales of marital love, first love, and tragic love. The bright, light Overture to Fidelio opens the evening with its fortissimo outburst of strings. The overture is from Beethoven s opera, in which Leonore, disguised as a prison guard named Fidelio, rescues her husband, Florestan, from death in a political prison. Soprano Maria Valdes then takes the stage to thrill us with Si, mi chiamano Mimi from Puccini s beloved opera, La Boheme. The song concerns Mimi and Rudolpho s first meeting in which the two main characters fall in love. It is considered Mimi s most beautiful aria. Ms. Valdes will return to sing Tatiana s Letter Scene from Tchaikovsky s opera, Eugene Onegin. In the song, a young, romantic girl falls in love with a selfish hero and pours her heart out to him in a letter filled with raw emotion. The song and the opera showcase Tchaikovsky s ability to combine lyric opera with more dramatic music in a rich symphonic and vocal texture. Maria Valdes, an Atlanta native, has been praised for her silvery tone, glassily smooth phrasing, and fine caliber dynamics. She has appeared with major opera companies in San Francisco and Chicago, performed with the Las Vegas Philharmonic, and her arias from Handel s Messiah performed at St. Thomas Church, Fifth Avenue, New York in December 2016 were praised by critics as beautifully sung. Maria Valdes The story of Francesca da Rimini, immortalized in Dante s Divine Comedy, centers on the beautiful Francesca who falls in love with her brother-in-law, Paolo. Both are murdered by her husband, condemned to hell and trapped in a whirlwind storm. The symphonic poem opens with dark, ominous music, moves to the whirlwind storm then subsides as the lovers try to explain, only to be doomed to eternal punishment in a breathtaking finish from the entire orchestra.
Experience the worlds of Women, Women, Women! as the orchestra gives us an evening of enchanting music with a woman at the center of each piece. Sleeping Beauty Ballet Suite is a work taken from Tchaikovsky s ballet. He loved the story of a beautiful maiden, put under an evil spell only to be saved by a prince s kiss. The music displays the warm sweetness and great melodies that his devotees loved, and still do today. He never managed a concert suite on his own because he could not bear to drop anything from the ballet! It would fall to Pyotr Jurgensen, a Russian classical sheet music publisher, and Aleksander Siloti, a Russian composer, both men Tchaikovsky trusted implicitly, to accomplish the final editing and publication. The result is a composition that makes full throated use of the entire orchestra, closing Tchaikovsky with the gently swaying waltz so familiar to all of us. Next, we are taken to the world of the fiery gypsy, Carmen. The suite is almost entirely comprised of preludes and entr actes from the four-act opera and has been acclaimed for its brilliance of melody, harmony, atmosphere, and orchestration: woodwinds over sharply accented percussion, flute over harp arpeggios, a march song and a light-hearted air introduced by bassoons and woodwinds, and the Toreador Song presented by strings. Bizet s skill lies in his ability to musically express the emotions of his Bizet characters, and it is beautifully represented in this work. Following intermission, we are treated to six overtures from operas concerned with women. We begin with La Cenerentola or Cinderella, and then hear La Italiana in Algeri, the story of an Italian lady who successfully uses her wiles to overtake her husband s captor in Algiers. La Traviata follows with the trials of Viloetta Valery, a courtesan who goes astray, and then the comical story of Overture to Beautiful Galatea, where a sculptor asks Venus to bring his lovely statue of Galatea to life only to have her returned to stone when she becomes too much to handle! The playful Overture to Pique Dame captivates us before the orchestra closes with the iconic and ever popular Can Can. Ah, the many worlds of women! Monday February 19, 2018 Brunswick High School Auditorium 8:00 p.m. STRAUSS French Horn Concerto RIMSKI KORSAKOV Trombone Concerto in E flat NEPOMUK HUMMEL Trumpet Concerto in F flat CARL MARIA von WEBER Bassoon Concerto in F major MARCELLO Concerto for Oboe in D Minor CARL MARIA von WEBER Clarinet Concerto #2 BIZET-BORNE Carmen Fantasy for Flute and Orchestra RIMSKI-KORSAKOV Capriccio Espagnol, Op 34 Experience Masterful Moments when principal players from our orchestra present some of the most challenging and lovely solo works written for their instruments. The pieces come from German, Russian, Austrian, and Venetian composers; some familiar, others new to us. First, we hear the rich, pleasing sound of the French horn in a movement from a concerto that uses the highest and lowest notes in the horn s register. It is considered one of the most demanding solo works for the horn. Remaining in the brass, we will hear a movement from what many trombonists consider the definitive trombone concerto. The lively allegro vivace will be followed by a demanding trumpet solo which uses the wide range of the instrument. Prepare to be captivated. Next, we hear from the winds with a bassoonist engaging in a flurry of scales and arpeggios, showing off one of the instrument s flashiest and most virtuosic finales. The exquisite, clear sound of the oboe follows with a movement of lyrical, haunting, expressive music, and then the clarinet closes out the first part of the program with what is considered an exhibition of technique and style on the part of the soloist. Whether taken fast or slow, the piece always ends with one of the most virtuosic passages in the clarinet repertoire. Following intermission, we are treated to the delightful Carmen Fantasy for Flute and Orchestra, a setting by Francois Borne based on themes from George Bizet s Carmen. Borne was a flutist, and his settings of Carmen s rich melodies combine the virtuoso s understanding of the solo instrument with a flair for the dance rhythms and passion of the opera. Spectacular arpeggios require fleet fingering and consummate breath control from the flutist. The evening closes with an orchestral suite, based on Spanish folk melodies. Rimski-Korsakov called it a brilliant composition for the orchestra, desiring us to listen for the timbres, melodies, and patterns that are exactly suited for each instrument. He calls this the very essence of the composition. This concert will showcase our exceptional musicians both as soloists and members of the full orchestra as they give us an evening of Masterful Moments.
Experience Hope and Triumph... as the orchestra closes the season with music of hope fulfilled and triumph achieved. Maestro Luis Haza will open the evening with the Love Theme from Cinema Paradiso, the 1989 Academy Award winner for Best Foreign Language film. It is a sweet, haunting love theme that captures all the gentle, nostalgic feel of the film which centers on a young boy who fulfills his dream to become a filmmaker. Maestro Haza performs on a 1707 Pietro Guarnerius di Mantua violin with a Jean Baptiste Vuillaume picture bow from the Napoleon collection. Expect the love and passion that our Grammy award-winning and world-renowned conductor always gives us when he performs on his priceless violin. Jorge Peña, The Coastal Symphony of Georgia s principal violist and general manager, will conduct the orchestra during this piece. Then experience the power and beauty of Sergei Rachmaninoff s Symphony No. 2. Facing harsh criticism of his first symphony, Rachmaninoff fell into a deep despair and lost Maestro Luis Haza confidence as a symphonist. He persevered, seeking professional help and struggling through many revisions. After the hugely successful piano concerto #2, he achieved personal triumph in the early 20th Century when, conducting his Symphony No 2 at its premiere, he received rousing applause as well as an award and 1,000 rubles. Today his Symphony No 2 remains one of his best known compositions. Following the opening largo, then the lively allegro, comes the adagio which is perhaps the most beautiful part of the work. Pop Rock artist Eric Carmen based his hit song Never Gonna Fall in Love Again on this movement and lists Rachmaninoff in the credits for the piece. The symphony is hauntingly beautiful, representing hope and redemption, and is proof of one s ascent from utter failure to renewed triumph. Indeed, the final movement ends with such festive music, it brings to mind the sound of bells pealing in celebration.
