Unit 5 Pre-Assessment Read the poem below about a boy and his pet elephant. As you read, think about their opinions towards each other. My Elephant Thinks I'm Wonderful A Funny Elephant Poem for Kids --Kenn Nesbitt From the book My Hippo Has the Hiccups My elephant thinks I'm wonderful. My elephant thinks I'm cool. My elephant hangs around with me and follows me into school. My elephant likes the way I look. He thinks that I'm fun and smart. He thinks that I'm kind and generous and have a terrific heart. My elephant thinks I'm brave and bold. He's proud of my strength and guts. But mostly he likes the way I smell. My elephant thinks I'm nuts.

Think about the poem you have just read. What is the elephant s OPINION about the boy? Write a sentence in which you use at least TWO adjectives used in the poem, which describe how the elephant feels about the boy. What are the two reasons the elephant is proud of the boy? (Use a complete sentence in your answer.)

The following sentence is found in the poem you just read: My elephant thinks I'm nuts. In the poem, the best substitution for the word nuts would be: a) hard shelled fruit b) courage c) crazy What are two things the elephant enjoys DOING with the boy. (Use a complete sentence in your answer.) The following sentence is found in the poem you just read: He's proud of my strength and guts. In the poem, the best substitution for the word guts would be: a) stomach b) courage c) insides

Read the paragraph below about elephants and their characteristics. The African elephant is the largest mammal in the world and remarkably adaptable. Elephants live in woodlands, forests, deserts and savanna, spread across 37 countries in sub-saharan Africa. Elephants are quite peaceful if left alone, but if they feel threatened - watch out. Elephants can be over 14 feet tall and 30 feet wide and can weigh up to 12000 pounds. They drink 30-50 gallons of water every day and are vegetarians. They eat grass, leaves, twigs, bark, fruit and seeds. Based on the facts you just read about elephants, what is your opinion about a boy being able to keep an elephant as a pet? Would an elephant make a good pet? Why or why not? Using information from the paragraph you just read about elephants, give at least two reasons to support your opinion. (Remember to use complete sentences in your writing.)

Using information from the paragraph about elephants, give at least two reasons to support your opinion. (Remember to use complete sentences in your writing.)

In my opinion, it would not be a good idea to have an elephant for a pet. Elephants can be up to 12000 pounds! That is too heavy to keep in a house or apartment. Also, they drink up to 50 gallons of water a day. It would take forever to get all that water. Because of that, I don t think an elephant would make a good pet.
