The Amazon rainforest is in Brazil. It s the biggest rainforest in the world. Thirty percent of the world s animals and plants live there. There are more than two million insect species in the rainforests. But, every day, about 35 species become extinct and disappear. Why? Because people don t protect the rainforests. Every year, they cut down a lot of trees. Last year, they cut down an area as big as Galicia. Small farmers and big companies cut down the trees for different reasons. Farmers sometimes want to have space to cultivate food. Companies cut down trees to make paper and cardboard. If people destroy the rainforests, the consequences will be serious for everybody. That s because the rainforests produce most of the earth s oxygen. If they don t produce oxygen, there will be more carbon dioxide in the air. If there is more carbon dioxide in the air, the world s temperature will increase. This problem is called global warming. We must protect the rainforests. We need them now and people will need them in the future. 1 The world s biggest rainforest is in Latin America. 2 Some rainforests existed before dinosaurs. 3 Two million species disappear from the rainforests every day. 4 People didn t cut down any trees last year. 5 The rainforests produce carbon dioxide.
