Limitations of LPR (EVERY LPR System not just RepoSystems) Good LPR cameras are outfitted with Infrared. In states where there are red or green lettering the infrared sends a mixed signal back to the camera and sometimes cannot read it. (this is resolved by using our LPR Express XD systems and software) Highly Reflective Background. States with a highly reflective background, such as Oklahoma and Florida are challenging (but not impossible) for LPR cameras to read as it throws to much light back to the camera. Our new LPR Express XD software and Nitrogen filled cameras read the plates without any issue. (this is resolved by using our LPR Express XD systems and software) Skewing Here is a simple definition of Skewing: Verb- gerund or present participle: Skewing - suddenly change direction or position. "The car had skewed across the track" Twist or turn or cause to do this. "He skewed around in his saddle" Make biased or distorted in a way that is regarded as inaccurate, unfair, illegible or misleading. Imagine having a huge sign on the top of a building, and you were on the ground trying to read the letters of the signs shadow, cast from above. The letters are so distorted that it could be illegible. Double Stacked letters, for example, are generally not read by an LPR camera system, or they are read incorrectly. For Example: (this is resolved by using our LPR Express XD systems and software)
Limitations of LPR (EVERY LPR System not just RepoSystems) However, within RSN or our sister sites, you can just enter the actual letters (not stacked), in the area for the license plate value. In the example above, it would just be ABC123. You would then set your LPR Express to Fuzzy 2 and your camera system will work just fine. (this is resolved by using our LPR Express XD systems and software) Common letters such as the letter in the first column may be misread as the letter in the second column, and or vice versa. (see chart below) Letter Misread Letter Misread Letter Misread B 8 L 1 or I U V or Y D B M W V U or Y F A P D W M G 6 Q G Y V I 1 or L S 5 or 2 Z 2 or S or 5 This is not to mean that other characters cannot be misinterpreted, it all depends on the quality of the plate, the color of the letter and skewing (see above). Imagine a camera system trying to read a plate that looked like this: The Human Eye can read it, but the camera system will have difficulty. It is a limitation of not being truly intelligent. On vehicles with trailer hitches or hitch balls, that may be obstructing the view of the plate, can be misread. Handicap characters or other special characters may be misread or not read at all. Any plate that is dirty. Those in northern states have limited use of camera systems during the winter months. Glare from ambient lighting can reflect back to the cameras and cause a misread or no read.
Limitations of LPR (EVERY LPR System not just RepoSystems) States that have laws in place against the use of LPR systems for commercial usage. Arkansas, New Hampshire and Maine are a few that currently have laws in place. Other states are trying to put laws in place. Please check with your state (where you operate) to make sure that it is NOT illegal. And lastly but a bit comical, sometimes picket fences are read as 1 s and L s. LPR Usage for the Collateral Recovery Industry The goal should be for you to create a historical database of plates with geocoding (GPS coordinates with date and time) which you can refer to for historical purposes. You will want to scan areas that are usable or sellable by you in the future, i.e. parking lots, apartment complexes, work places, not vehicles going down a highway. Therefore LPR systems that are built for parking lot usage are more feasible for you to own (and generally less expensive). It doesn t benefit you in any way to be scanning plates on a highway going 70 mph. You can t reuse the data, you probably won t follow the vehicle to a stopping point (if it alarms on the list). You should be able to sell that data to lenders, skip tracers, forwarders or other recovery agencies at a profit for you and or in partnership with a data provider. If someone promises you to get rich finding hotlist assigned cars, say it ain t so.. You should focus on using the camera systems to locate your own accounts, in the words of our elders, the rest is gravy. You should use the cameras to locate your own repossession orders first. Have that as your main goal and you will be extremely happy with the results. If you are in a rural area, the camera systems are particularly a HUGE benefit to you; You are the only one in the area that will have your historical scanned data, making it that much more valuable to you. We recommend that you put camera systems on scout cars. If you are a mom and pop, and just want cameras to be your eyes as you go through a debtor s area, then putting them on a truck would be beneficial, however to get the most value of a camera system you need to be scanning thousands of plates per day, building your historical database, putting them on a tow truck may not make the most economical sense.
