UVA Drama Department Rehearsal and Performance Guidelines For all Actors, Crew Members, Designers and Stage Managers All actors release use of their image in photo or video format for UVA Drama publicity purposes. No smoking anywhere in any building. There will be no drinking of alcohol, or use of drugs before or during rehearsal, performance & production hours. Check the callboard daily. CALLS are times to be ready to start, not arrival times so be PROMPT. Please enter and exit rehearsal quietly. Turn off all cell phones, smart phones and other beeping devices during rehearsal. Book sacks, purses, and other personal items should not obstruct the aisles if you are rehearsing in a theater. For security reasons do not bring valuable items. Pick up after yourself and the trash you leave behind. This is the area where you work. No food or beverages are allowed in the dressing rooms at any time. Visitors are not allowed backstage or in dressing areas during rehearsals or performances without Director s permission Sign in for all tech, dress rehearsals, and performances. Never sign in for another party. After signing in, remain in the theater. Use props only during rehearsal and performance and always return them to the prop table after using. Report to the Stage Manager or Asst. Stage Manager all broken props, stage hazards, and rehearsal costume repairs when discovered so they can be dealt with ahead of time. Please stay out of the entrance area during actor s entrances and exits and during crew shifts. The area is very tight. Cast and Crew should not be seen in public areas (this includes pre-show and intermission.) Be alert to the monitor for cues. The Stage Manager is responsible for warn only before acts, not before individual cues once the act has begun. Please do not speak to the Stage Manager, Asst. Stage Manager or Board Operators during light cues, sound cues, and set changes. Distractions can cause serious problems. At the end of each dress rehearsal, when actors are released by the stage manager, they should quickly change out of costume and retrieve all personal items from dressing rooms before returning to theatre for director notes. Crew and cast should not leave after rehearsal or performances until notes have been given and Stage Manager releases them. No food or drink in the Culbreth, Ruth Caplin and Helms Theaters. All scenery, props, furniture, costumes and michrophones are to be treated gently, and with respect to the expense of breakage or replacement. No actors, designers, crew, or managers should post any images of the design elements of the production to any social media platforms without direct consent of the Publicity Team. This includes still photography, audio, and video. For Actors in rehearsal Arrive on time and ready to rehearse. This means dressed and onstage for your call time. Arrive prepared with pencil and eraser to record all of your blocking, and a notebook to record notes. Wear appropriate rehearsal clothing. When asking for lines please use the agreed upon phrase for the company. Cast should be off book as assigned on the rehearsal schedule. No actor should give notes to crewmembers or other actors, problems should be reported to the stage managers. Do not leave the rehearsal area without being released by the Stage Manager and/or Asst. Stage Manager. All participants must treat rental materials (libbrettos, vocal book, etc.) gently. All participants must erase all notes made in rental materials. There is a $25 charge for any book returned in poor condition. For Actors interaction with costume shop If cast, do not alter, cut, or color your hair without checking first with the Director & Costume Designer. All actors are expected to provide their own makeup, approved by the Costume Designer. Fill out your availability schedule carefully. You will be called for fittings based on when you have indicated that you are free. You will be called on the telephone by the shop manager asking you to come in for a fitting at least two days ahead of time. You must call the shop back at (434) 924-8968 to confirm that you will be there at the requested time or discuss other options.

It is not acceptable to miss a fitting. Be on time for your fitting. If you will be late for any reason, call the shop at (434) 924-8968 to let them know. Wear appropriate underwear to your fitting. Bring requested items with you, including those already in rehearsal. Wear your rehearsal or performance shoes in rehearsal as soon as they are available. Rehearsal garments will be provided by the shop only if the garment affects movement or period deportment, i.e. corsets and long skirts. Never eat, drink, or smoke in costume. There are no exceptions to this rule. Wardrobe personnel will report an infringement immediately to Stage Management. Drinking water during performance is allowed backstage only through a straw or from a bottle, not from an open cup. All eating in the Green Room should be done at the table, not on the couches or upholstered chairs. A dressing list of all your garments and accessories will be posted at your dressing table. Please check it carefully for when to wear what. Each time you arrive for rehearsal or performance check that all your costume items are there. If you feel you are missing an item, check your ditty bag carefully before asking wardrobe personnel. Wardrobe personnel will tell you how to prepare your laundry. Learn to hang up your own clothes properly unless you are involved in a quick change. At the end of each rehearsal or performance, retrieve your own costume pieces left on or back stage. A run sheet will be posted on the callboard where you can record any needed repairs to your costume for the next run. It is not appropriate to request a costume change on this form. The only appropriate venue to discuss your thoughts about your costume is with the costume designer in a fitting. For Crew Sound board Ops must run checks of the system and the sound plot prior to performance every night. Run Crew members are to wear black long pants, black long sleeved shirts, without writing, dark close-toed shoes and dark socks. Board Operators in the booth are to wear black long sleeved shirts.
