About the Sustainable Development Goals In September 2015, world leaders from 193 countries came together to adopt the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The SDGs became the document to guide our social, economic and environmental actions to achieve a sustainable future by 2030. As a result, everyone and especially youth have an interest in making the SDG agenda a reality.
About the #SDGchallenge The #SDGchallenge is an exciting new development education project, which aims to engage participants using Global Citizen Education (GCED) to take informed action to contribute towards the achievement of the SDGs. The #SDGchallenge recognises the potential of film makers in raising awareness of the Sustainable Development Goals in Ireland. The Perspectives short film competition invites you to enter by creating a two - four minute film (Multiple entries are welcome) which focuses on one of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Each of the shortlisted films will be showcased at a screening evening in Dublin and uploaded to the Development Perspectives website. The films should be made for an online audience. Each film will be shared via the Development Perspectives network and social media channels, which reaches over 12,000 people. The competition will be judged by a panel of experts from within the film and development fields. Submission terms: Each film should be 2-4 minutes in length. Closing Date for Applications: Friday, 10th of November. Submission Date for Short Films: Monday, 24th November 2017. The winning short film will be announced at the National Showcase event (please see details below). finalist s masterclass On the 30 th of November, the finalists chosen will be offered an opportunity to attend a half day Masterclass in Filmbase, Templebar, Dublin. This Masterclass will be provided by the following Award-Winning film directors: Darren Thornton: Darren established the award-winning Calipo Theatre Company in 1995. He has directed numerous stage productions during his tenure as Artistic Director. Recent productions include Chatroom by Enda Walsh, Pineapple by Phillip McMahon and the original stage-production of Ten dates with Mad Mary by Yasmine Akram. He made his television debut directing the IFTA award-winning Love is the drug in 2004, a six part comedydrama series for RTE. His first short film Frankie won the Prix UIP award at the Berlin film festival in 2008 and the European Academy Award for best short film in the same year. His second short film Two hearts also won the Prix UIP award and was nominated for a European Academy Award in 2011. In 2003, Darren established the Sharp Focus film project; a teenage film initiative that runs annually, Sharp Focus enables young people from the North and South of Ireland to work with established filmmakers on the production of original short films that explores the legacy of conflict within their communities. His first feature film A date for Mad Mary was produced by Element pictures and is currently in cinemas. Dearbhla Glynn: Dearbhla Glynn is an accomplished documentary filmmaker, specializing in exploration of culture and conflict. Since 2009, Dearbhla has focused on rights based films. She has made several films in Palestine, Iraq and The Democratic Republic of the Congo. In June 2013 Dearbhla won the grand prize at the ICCI Awards for her short film The Value of Women in DRC. In recent years Dearbhla has been a published writer and photo-journalist, publishing with Vice, Al Jazeera, Mashable and the Irish Times.

His first feature film A date for Mad Mary was produced by Element pictures and is currently in cinemas. dearbhla glynn Dearbhla Glynn is an accomplished documentary filmmaker, specializing in exploration of culture and conflict. In June 2013. Dearbhla won the grand prize at the ICCI Awards for her short film The Value of Women in DRC. Emmet sheerin Emmet Sheerin works as Campaigns Officer with Trócaire. Outside of his development work he is also a documentary maker. His documentary Sumud: Everyday Resistance, was shortlisted for the ICCL Human Rights Film Award 2016. Margaret Downey Margaret Downey is co-founder of Development Perspectives and has been involved in the organisation since 2006. Margaret has a diploma in complimentary health care, a BA in Development Studies and in 2013 completed her 2nd cert in Yoga Teacher Training. Margaret has a keen interest in Development Education, health, hiking, yoga and chess.

Private screening evening Date: 22nd of February 2018 Time: 7.00 8.30pm Location: Filmbase, Dublin On the 22nd of February a screening of shortlisted films will take place in Filmbase, Temple Bar. Showcase EVENt - Announcement of winner Date: 23rd of February, 2018 Time: 9.30 12.30pm Location: The Pillar Room, Friends of the Rotunda, Dublin. On the 23rd of February, the winner of this short film competition will be announced by a key note speaker at a National Showcase Event in Dublin. The winning short film will be shown at the event.
About the Dóchas code of conduct on Images and messages The Dóchas Code of Conduct on Images and Messages is a voluntary, selfregulatory code for Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), in particular those working in the development sector. It was created by NGOs involved in emergency relief, long-term development and development education.the purpose of this Code is to provide a framework which organisations can refer to when designing and implementing their public communication strategy. It offers a set of guiding principles that can assist organisations in their decision-making about which images and messages to choose in their communication while maintaining full respect for human dignity. The Code defines standards of best practice for NGOs and represents the active commitment of its signatories to conduct their activities with respect to values of human dignity, respect and truthfulness. The Code was officially adopted by Dóchas members in 2007, and there are currently over 80 signatory organisations. What the principles are the principles of the of code the Code of conduct of Conduct? The Code of Conduct s guiding principles stipulate that choices of images and messages will be made based on the paramount principles of: Respect for the dignity of the people concerned; Belief in the equality of all people; and Acceptance of the need to promote fairness, solidarity and justice. Signatory organisations will avoid stereotypical or sensational images in their public communications. The adoption of the Code means that aid agencies will choose images and messages that represent the full complexity of the situations in which they work, and that they will seek the permission of the people portrayed in the photos they use.
