Guide for Fibre To The Home network constructors To help you in the choice of products we have, based on our experience, developed product concepts including the products needed in a certain project. The concept is a basis for solution planning and each solution is customized with expert knowledge to respond to the needs of each customer. This brochure introduces Nestor Cables product concept for Fibre To The Home network construction. Contact us! Tel. +358 20 791 2770 info@nestorcables.fi firstname.lastname@nestorcables.fi 2

Nestor Cables product concept for Fibre To The Home network constructors includes all necessary materials of optical fibre cabled network excluding cable ducts, manholes and other protection materials of cables. Construction of Fibre To The Home networks differs from construction of optical fibre trunk networks because of great number of fibres and many branching points. The number of subscribers may increase quickly from tens to thousands and therefore it is vitally important to plan the construction and material solutions in such a way that enables a wellmanaged and easy maintenance and extensions of the networks during many years or even decades. The starting point for developing our product concept has been the conventional materials of trunk networks: with our increasing experience we have then developed cable and accessory solutions, which are especially applicable for Fibre To The Home networks. By using products of our concept cabling from the access node to the premises can be implemented in various urban areas, such as municipal centers and single family house areas as well as rural and sparse populated areas. Our aim is to offer solutions, which have characteristic of technically excellent functionality, durability and long life and which are cost effective. In addition to this concept, our product menu includes concepts for office buildings, multi-storey apartment blocks, mobile network base station towers, data transmission between electric substation and transformer station, wind power parks, water supply engineering projects, underwater cabling, data centers and portable optical fibre cable units. Urban area cabling with duct and directly buried cables In urban areas the cables are installed either directly in ground or in duct pipes. Directly buried optical fibre cables are generally installed by digging alongside roads and streets, but also other installation methods, such as ploughing and milling, can be used. Directly buried cable shall withstand the compressive forces caused by the stones and the soil and the tensile forces during installation. Duct cables are blown or pulled into duct pipes by using equipment applicable to these installations. If the cables are pulled into duct pipes, they shall withstand the tensile forces during installation. Accessories for jointing, terminating and connecting are presented in their own chapters of this brochure. Urban area cabling using microduct technology Nestor Cables concept for urban area cabling with microduct technology covers all materials of cable network. With the products of this concept cabling from access node to customer premises can be implemented in various urban areas, such as municipal centers and single family house areas. Microduct cables have significantly smaller size than conventional cables, because they are protected by microducts. The small size of these cables can be utilized for example by installing cables into crammed cable ducts in urban areas. The microduct technology solution consists of microduct cables, microducts and installation accessories. Microducts are installed either directly in ground or in existing duct pipes. When the microducts have been installed, it is easy to blow the microduct cables into microducts during the construction phase of the network or later whenever there is need for this. Microducts also enable optimizing the cables and the number of fibres, when the number of subscribers increases. Optical fibre cabling concept for village networks Village networks are built all over Finland. Conditions vary from arctic hill scenery of Lapland and the mosaic of water and land of Lake-Finland to clayish and low-lying coasts of the Baltic Sea. Nestor Cables has been a trusted partner in most of the village networks, which have been constructed during recent years. Based on our experience in several village network projects we have compiled the best products into a complete village network concept. The concept includes all the optical fibre cables and accessories for constructing a village network. Our aim has been to keep the concept as simple as possible in order to make the management of the product types during construction and the maintenance of the network easy and cost effective. The optical fibre cabling entity for village network construction offered by Nestor Cables has been tested in demanding conditions in various areas of Finland and it is applicable for a large scale of optical fibre cabling projects, covering projects from cabling of small villages to broadband projects of a whole province. Optical fibre cables In village network installations optical fibre cables are generally ploughed alongside roads. For this purpose, Nestor Cables offers cables suitable for direct ploughing as follows: Drop cables: Directly buried optical fibre cable FYO2PMU Mini 4/6/12 x SML Non-metallic directly buried optical fibre cable FYO2RMU 3,5 kn 4/6/12 x SML Feeder and distribution cables: Directly buried optical fibre cable FZVD2PMU Flex 24/48/96/192/288/ 384/432 x SML Directly buried optical fibre cable FYOVDMU 12/24/48/96 x SML FYO2PMU Mini FZVD2PMU Flex 7

Joint closures and cabinets Optical fibre cable joints can be implemented either with underground joint closures or with joint cabinets installed on the ground surface. In joint closures the fibre splices are in safe from external hazards, but the accessibility for maintenance, such as adding and changing activities, is not very easy, especially in winter. Joint cabinets enable ease and flexibility for maintenance and they can also accommodate patch panels and splitters, but the cabinet may be subject to external hazards, because it is located above the ground surface. The core principles in the design of all our joint solutions have been to enable easy and quick installations, and operating lifetime for the whole lifetime of the network. Joint closures The NC-400 -series joint closures developed by Nestor Cables have so called hood design. They are water tight and are made of acid resistant steel. They can be installed directly in ground, man/hand holes or cabinets. The design of the closures enables very easy installation, but also highest reliability. Closures are available with fibre splice capacity from 12 to 288. The closures are delivered as factory assembled joint closure packets. Drop cable joint closure NC-412 Access network joint closure NC-450 8 Universal joint closure NC-400 Branching joint closure TBK8 In addition to our own joint closures Nestor Cables also offers Tykoflex TF6-joint closures with fibre splice capacity of 24 to 96 and TBK8-joint closures with fibre splice capacity of 48 to 432. These closures are also delivered as factory assembled joint closure packets.

Joint cabinets Nestor Cables offers complete cabinet solutions, which consist of a joint or crossconnect cabinet installed inside a distribution cabinet. This helps in project management and cost calculating, when complete entities can be acquired directly to the field of installation. In the field these complete entities enable easy and quick installation work. Accessories for termination and connection of cables in access nodes In access nodes of optical access networks, the number of fibres may be very high and it generally increase over time. In termination and connection of optical fibre cables it is therefore important to use distinct and modular products, which can be added when number of fibres are growing. In fibre connections it is important already at the initial stage to take into account the future high numbers of fibres and fibre management in order to make it as easy as possible to connect new subscribers and to avoid fault situations. At left: NC-1000, at right: NC-330 At the entrance of the optical fibre cables into the access node room, especially in the case of large access nodes, the outdoor cables should be jointed to fire safe, flexible and nonmetallic indoor cables or indoor/outdoor cables. Also the regulation 65 A/2014 M of Ficora requires that outdoor cables are not installed inside the building more than 2 m without a fire protection. The indoor or indoor/outdoor cables are recommended to be acquired as factory terminated cables with the other end of the cable terminated to patch panel which can be installed into ODF. This eliminates the need of extra connections in termination of optical fibre cables. Cable joints are located in so called indoor joint cabinets, which are wall cabinets with a capacity of next to one thousand fibre splices or floor cabinets with capacity of several thousands of fibre splices. Nestor Cables indoor joint cabinets are NC-330 and NC-1000. 10

Optical fibre cables in urban area network access nodes In urban area network access nodes, the optical fibre patch panels of the other end of cables coming from indoor joint cabinets are recommended to be installed in dedicated ODF racks and active network equipment to separate racks. This principle is important for well managed cable terminations during network construction and later when new cables are installed in the access node room. The design of ODF rack takes into account the management of high number of fibres, which is not possible with normal 19-inch racks. The optional splitters are generally recommended to be installed in ODF racks rather than in equipment racks in order to achieve better patch cord management. ODF rack solutions offered by Nestor Cables are modular and installer friendly NC-1000 and NC-2200 connection racks and 48- and 96-fibre patch panels. ODF racks have double doors at the front side, fixed side walls, back wall and adjustable legs. Cables can entry the rack from top or bottom and all installations can be made at the front side of the rack. This makes it possible to place the rack against the wall or two racks with their back walls against each other. The standard lengths of the factory terminated cables are 5, 15, 25 and 50 m or customized up to the length of 120 m. The connector alternatives in the patch panel are SC/UPC, SC/APC, LC/UPC and LC/APC. The assembly of ODF rack NC-1000, v.2 includes fixing rails for NC-1000 -patch panels, cable management rings for incoming and outgoing cables and patch cord organizers. In racks placed side by side the patch cords can be pulled directly from one rack into another rack. The dimensions of the rack are 600 X 300 x 2200 mm or 600 X 300 x 2000 mm, and the capacity is depending on the height of the rack and on the connector type 912-2016 fibres. The rack can be equipped with 48 or 96 fibre NC-1000 -patch panels and NC-1000-splitter modules. Suitable ODF-rack for urban are access nodes, NC-1000, v.2, is based on ODF-1000 mechanics developed in Finland. 11

48-fibre NC-1000 -patch panel Standard assembly of NC-2000 rack: Grid doors in the front and in the back Side walls Top plate with cable entries Adjustable legs 19-inch rails in the front and in the back Patch cord organizers at the left side Pocket for documents in the other door Mains power supply panel with 7 earthed outlets for active equipment 12 ODF rack NC-2200 ODF rack NC-2200 is based on 19- inch technology and the dimensions are 900 x 300 x 2200 mm. It has installation space for 40 patch panels, which means capacity of up to 3840 fibres. The rack can be equipped with 48 or 96 fibre NC-232 -patch panels and NC 2000 -splitter modules. The assembly of ODF rack NC-2200 includes 19-inch fixing rails, cable management rings for incoming and outgoing cables and patch cord organizers in two rows. ODF rack NC-2200 Equipment racks Equipment racks are generally 19-inch racks or cabinets. The most common dimensions are 600 x 600 x 2000 mm, but the width of 800 mm is recommended for a better cable management. Nestor Cables equipment rack is NC-2000 connection rack with width of 800 mm and it is available with depths of 600 and 800 mm. The rack has grid doors in the front and in the back, side walls and top plate as a standard, but the rack is also available without these parts and also as a customized version. Connection cabinet NC-2000

Optical fibre patch cords in urban area network access nodes Nestor Cables patch cord menu for access nodes includes single fibre as well as 12 or 24 fibre patch cords with various connector types. The standard lengths of single fibre FMS patch cords are 2, 3, 5 and 10 m, but also customer lengths are available up to 50 m. The cable type of 12 and 24 fibre patch cords is FRMS and these cables are always delivered in customer specified lengths. Protection of patch cords between racks When multifiber patch cords are used between racks, they can be installed in conventional cable trays with other cables. When 1 or 2 fibre FMS type patch cords are used, they shall be installed in own trays in order to avoid mechanical stresses, such as compressions caused by other cables. Mechanical stresses cause extra attenuation in fibres. Nestor Cables has developed NesCon fibre tray system for protecting patch cords. This system consists of basic trays made of aluminium and with length of 1200 mm and width of 150 mm as well as direct and side vertical trays with same dimensions for patch cords coming down from the horizontal tray. The system also consists of a complete selection of branching, jointing and supporting components, which make it easy to protect patch cords between racks in small or large equipment spaces. Patch cords 13

Connection solutions of optical fibre cables in village network access nodes In village network access nodes, the number of fibres may vary from small numbers to more than one thousand fibres. Fibre management is important in order to make the connections of new subscribers easy and to minimize fault situations during operation and maintenance. NC-2000 connection cabinet based on 19-inch technology is the basic solution for village network access nodes. it is possible to install both optical fibre terminations and active network equipment into the same cabinet. This results in efficient space using, which is important especially in rented spaces. The design of NC-2000 connection cabinet takes into account the requirements due to cable termination, patch cord management and heat load of active equipment. Cabinets are factory assembled and equipped including for example patch cord guides and fixing and earthing bars for incoming cables. The optical fibres are terminated in the connection cabinet to NC-210 or NC-232 patch panels. The height of one panel is 1 U (44,45 mm) and panels can be installed directly one above the other. One cabinet can accommodate even 40 patch panels. The termination capacity of NC-210 closure is 96 fibres and the that of NC-232 is 48 fibres. As a factory assembled packet and with LC connectors the termination capacity of NC-232 can be 96 fibres. Patch panels are delivered as factory assembled packets with fibre pigtails or a factory terminated cable. For protection of patch cords the patch panels are provided with patch cord guides and quick fixing protection/marking plate in front of the panel. Above: NC-210, below: NC-232 14

Splice tray closure NC-2000 with NC-48S splice trays When terminating optical fibre cables the fibre tubes are brought either directly to patch panels or to splice trays of fibre splice closures installed in the cabinet. If the latter method is used, termination work is easy and there is no need to handle the fibre connectors at all, because the fibres of the incoming cable are just spliced to the fibre pigtails coming from the patch panel. If it is difficult to bring the outdoor cables to the connection cabinet or the cable route inside the equipment space is too long for fire safety reasons, the fibre splices are to be located in separate indoor joint cabinets. In this case NC 232-cable pigtail packets are used in the connection cabinet. The free fibre ends of the cable pigtails are brought to the splice trays of the indoor joint cabinet. The standard lengths of the cables are 15, 20 and 50 m, but also customer lengths up to 120 m are available. 96-fibre NC-232 LC/APC cable assembly packet 15

Connection solutions in customer premises There are various types of premises in urban areas and therefore termination solutions of optical fibre cables depend on the premises types. The differences in various solutions are in number of fibres to terminated and in location of optical fibre cable terminations, which also affect the termination types. The premises in urban areas can be divided in enterprise and municipal premises, business centers comprising several enterprises, residential housing companies and single family houses. Enterprise and municipal premises and business centers The optical fibre cable is brought to the 19-inch rack or cabinet (for example connection cabinet NC-2000) located in the telecommunication room of the building. In this rack or cabinet, the cable is terminated to a patch panel (for example NC-232). If the cable route inside the building is several meters long, the cable type shall be changed into flexible, non-metallic and fire safe indoor cable or indoor/ outdoor cable for easy installation and in order to fulfil requirements of the new regulation of indoor networks. General use patch panel NC-232 is intended for termination of maximum 48 fibres. The panel is provided with quick fixing adapter plate for SC-, SC-D or LC-D -adapters with numbering. It can be delivered as a basic assembly or factory assembled with 12, 24 or 48 fibres including adapters, colour coded fibre pigtail sets and splice protection sleeves. Patch panel NC-232 16

Residential Housing companies The optical fibre cable is brought to the building distributor of the premises. The building distributor may be a simple 19-inch wall or floor rack or protected 19-inch connection cabinet. In the building distributor the cable is terminated to a patch panel. If the cable route inside the building is several meters long, the cable type shall be changed into flexible, non-metallic and fire safe indoor cable or indoor/outdoor cable for easy installation and in order to fulfil requirements of the new regulation of indoor networks. Nestor Cables has developed the open rack NC-2000, which is suitable for small distributors, such as building distributors of residential premises. The basic assembly includes 19-inch fixing rails, upper support with tray, wall fixtures and adjustable legs. As additional accessories are also available fixing and earthing bar NC-2000, cable management panel 1U NC-2000, cable guide NC-2000, patch cord management ring NC-2000 and power supply outlet group with 8 earthed outlets. Open rack NC-2000 has 19-inch design and its height is 1600 mm. Colour is RAL9005 (black). The design of patch panel NC-240 is simple and cost effective, which makes it suitable to be used in residential premises. The panel has the maximum termination capacity of 12 fibres. The height of the panel is 1 U and it has a space for storage of a few patch cords. Patch panel NC-240 17

18 Single family houses In new and quite new houses the termination inside the house is made by using the termination closure NC-125. The drop cable is brought directly through the wall of the house to the closure located in building distributor. Characteristics of the closure: Termination capacity of 4 fibres Cable entry to the closure is possible from the lower edge or from the bottom. In the latter case the cable remains invisible. Earthing terminals provided 4 adapter openings for SC or LC-D connectors in the lower edge of the closure Dimensions 100 x 100 x 40 mm Available also with factory mounted adapters and fibre pigtails Outdoor termination closure NC-140 and factory terminated indoor/outdoor cable. Termination closure NC-125 In older houses the termination outside the house is made by using the outdoor termination closure NC-140 and the factory terminated indoor/outdoor cable. Characteristics of the solution: Outdoor closure has IP54 protection and the dimensions are 125 x 175 x 75 mm The cable to be installed through the wall is the small size 2 fibre cable of type FTRMSU. This special cable is flexible and weatherproof and it is factory terminated to the small connection box NC-105. The special cable FTRMSU can entry the outdoor closure from the lower edge or from the bottom. In the latter case the cable remains invisible. The connection box is provided with UPC or APC-polished LC or SC connectors No fusion splices inside the house are needed

Other termination accessories for optical fibre cables In addition to closures also fibre pigtails, connector adapters and optical fibre patch cords are needed in termination of optical fibre cables.
