BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORICAL NOTE Annie Jeter Carmouche spent her childhood in Virginia and New Orleans and lived in St. Landry and Bossier parishes in Louisiana during and after the Civil War. She married Emile A. Carmouche. SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE The collection includes family letters, papers, and tablets containing Carmouche s memoirs. The letters and papers (1853-1898, 1951), which have been bound into a manuscript volume, pertain to social life, Confederate military involvement of family members, and family events. The memoirs (1913) recall Carmouche s childhood in Virginia and New Orleans, the Civil War, and life in St. Landry and Bossier parishes after the war. A bound copy of a transcription of the memoirs (1962) is also found in the collection. Also included is a scrapbook (1909-1936) which contains correspondence and minutes of the Shreveport Progressive League (1909) and newspaper clippings pertaining to Bossier Parish. Loose items include typescript copies of letters (originals dated 1857-1864), two articles by J. T. Manry (1931-1932), and a photograph of Orchard Place, the home of James Blair Gilmer. Captain Emile A. Carmouche's palmetto hat is also contained in the collection. Page 4 of 6
