Advanced Placement United States History Mr. Buggé 1950s Magazine Project Congratulations you have completed your college careers and were just hired as the staff of a new retro, 1950s style magazine. You are to write it as if you are living in the 1950s. Your first issue is due out on Wednesday March 28, 2012. Below is your criterion: Each individual within the group must research and write an article for the magazine 400 words minimum, 500 maximum Magazine must have a front and back cover - Magazine must have advertisements and pictures from the period Or if you want you may create your own period specific ads whatever you choose Must be organized as one magazine, not five separate stories you need to work together to manage the magazine s look and feel Be creative in your approach leave no blank spaces don t just type out your article and leave it in full page format, look at how periodicals are laid out and take creative inspiration from there. Create a title for your magazine Create a Masthead What is a masthead you ask? According to dictionary.com it is - 1. Also called flag. A statement printed in all issues of a newspaper, magazine, or the like, usually on the editorial page, giving the publications name, the names of the owner and staff, etc. or 2. It could also be the nameplate, a line of type on the front page of a newspaper or periodical cover giving the name of the publication. Your masthead will be both. Each article must contain the byline of who wrote it. This assignment is worth 60 points Below are sections your periodical must cover You are not limited to only these. If, in your research, you come across some interesting that you would like to write about and include feel free to do so. Sections or Articles Needed: Editorial This should reflect the opinions or direction of the magazine s editors. One of you may write this or all of you may write it, but it must show a unified approach to your topic. Write an editorial pertaining to some important topic of the decade Draw a few political cartoons that express the sentiment of the time. Write a small paragraph explaining your cartoons.

Contain your masthead that lists the members of your staff (aka the group) The True American Should reflect the look and feel of patriotic America Politics of the era Cold War and the Second Red Scare Conformity Patriotism What it meant to be a loyal American at this time this is the crux The Counter Culture Should be an article on the underground movement against American culture of the 1950s Jack Kerouac Beatniks Anti Establishment movements Etc. Music Disneyland Technicolor Grading: You will be graded both on your individual and the group s efforts as follows Content of your article - 40% Writing skills 20% Magazine Organization - 20% Resources Used - 20% A word about creativity Use the skills and knowledge of every member in your group to come up with a look and feel. Research what other periodicals looked like at the time for inspiration. Do not copy them directly but instead use them for ideas. Look for pictures, advertisements, and funny little things from the 1950s that might help you in filling space and being creative. Small anecdotal stories maybe, or some other creative way, maybe draw a comic strip. No it is not an art project, but something that will allow you to use your other talents. Take advantage of the opportunity. Deliverables: Wednesday March 28, 2012 One magazine from your group. Your names and titles should appear in the masthead of your periodical, you do not need to place them on the cover. One individual annotated bibliography in proper MLA. A word about your bibliography, by this time you should know how to assemble a properly formatted annotated bibliography in MLA format. Note one error will cost you one half of your total points; two errors will equal no points for the bibliography. Annotations may be two sentences; you do not have to write me a paragraph. I want to know why you went to this site or book and what you gained from that source. Simple, short and to the point. Yes, I want the same for photographs or advertisements. I also want a reflective paragraph on how you used the competencies and how you and your teammates worked as part of the project. I want to know if you, or they, did all, some, or none of the work. You are writing about the process of working with the team to accomplish a goal. DO NOT REITERATE THE COMPETENCIES BY SAYING: WE HAD TO BE COOPERATIVE WORKERS AND/OR I HAD TO BE AN INFORMATION LITERATE RESEARCHER. Your name, my name, class, period, date must be written in the upper right hand corner. We ve been over this. You will lose points if you don t do it correctly or forget to do it and handwrite your name on the day you hand it in. Below is an example: John Smith Mr. Buggé
