The Illini Lounge at 390 Main Street in Marseilles enters the spotlight this month! Owners Jim and Dawn Schultz bought the building on October 15, 2004 and opened on December 7th of that year. This restaurant location originally started as Illini Lounge and Bob Trudy and Richard Naretty installed the outside neon lounge sign when they opened the establishment. The restaurant changed hands and was named Stockyard Station and they covered up the sign to reflect the name change. When Jim and Dawn purchased the building they asked the original owners if they could use the Illini Lounge name. They agreed, enabling Jim and Dawn to uncover and display the original sign that is so notable today on Main Street! Another blast from the past is this image of a page from the menu from the restaurant in 1972. Illini Lounge has other Marseilles memorabilia posted in the restaurant. If you have any old pictures or newspaper clippings of the history of Marseilles or the restaurant, please feel free to drop a copy off to be proudly displayed. If you have not recently visited Illini Lounge you will notice the expansion they were excited to finish. They mention how fortunate they were to be able to purchase the adjoining building to expand the dining room with more dining space separate from the bar, a new video gaming area, Illini Wear Shop, and handicap accessible restrooms. You will also be surprised that they now have 16 beers on tap! Lastly, if you are planning a big party, they still have a lower level banquet room which accommodates up to 50 people. Jim chuckles when reflecting on memorable moments, but definitely feels that every year when the Freedom Run takes place it has added to special moments of camaraderie within the community. Furthermore, Illini Lounge is inspired and thankful to the residents who have supported their business. Looking to get into the restaurant and bar business? Both Jim and Dawn agree that you need to plan on working hard and often, and with time it will be very rewarding! On The Cover A perfect day for a stroll on Main Street on another warm afternoon in mid-may.
