With Johnsonian Bibliography, a supplement to Courtney. Cave, Edward. THE GENTLEMAN'S MAGAZINE, VOL.VIII 1738 London, 1738. Johnson was first published in the Gentleman's Magazine in 1738. Courtney lists 10 separate articles attributed to Johnson in the 1738 Gentleman's Magazine, the first of which was Ad Urbanum, a copy of latin verses. The pix shows one of two articles on his poem, London which established him on the literary scene. Also included are the Debates in the Senate of Lilliput articles. While Johnson alone wrote the "Debates in the Senate of Magna Lilliputia" from Nov. 1740 to Feb. 1743, Courtney only credits him with "revising" the 1738 articles, which were originally compiled by William Guthrie. According to Jack Lynch, the
Gentleman's Magazine was Johnson's principal source of income for many years.
