Lovereading Reader reviews of Tainted Love by Kimberley Chambers Below are the complete reviews, written by Lovereading members. Edel Waugh This is one of those books that I will probably remember all my life. The story is based around one infamous family in the East End of London from the 1980's to the present day. The matriarch of the family is the mother Queenie and she has two notorious sons called Vinny and Michael. These two men rule the East End by whatever means necessary while keeping other criminals down and maintaining their own reputation of respect to those who deserve it and striking fear into those that get on their wrong side. We see this family grow with children and grandchildren, not to mention the women and many criminal activities they are involved in. This was a remarkable story intricately weaving all the lives of one large family and their troubles together in one amazing saga. I recommend this to fans of all crime stories! Truly unforgettable! http://edelwaugh.blogspot.ie/2015/12/tainted-love-by-kimberleychambers.html?m=1

Natasha Motton If you are a fan of Martina Cole then you will love this book. The story is set in the East End of London and unfolds over three decades. It focuses on the trials and tribulations of the Butler family, who are legendary in the area being feared and respected in equal measures. The Butler Family is headed by Queenie (a true matriarch) who dotes on her two gangster sons and their extended families. Family is everything to the Butlers and anyone who crosses a Butler pays with their life. Tainted Love focuses primarily on the complicated love life of Michael Butler however via various twists and turns other members of the family become entwined within the story. Secrets, lies and past misdemeanours threaten to be uncovered throughout the story and as they are discovered the whole fabric of the Butler Family unravels with tragic and far reaching consequences. There are a lot of characters within the book and as a lot of them have similar names it can sometimes be confusing (or take some time to work out) who is being referred to and how they relate to the other characters. However, the character descriptions are detailed and well written so you quickly understand their background, psyche and motivation. If you like the style and language used by Martina Cole then I would recommend this book to you! Cathy Petersen Dark passions and family betrayal stalk the villainous Butler family as they struggle to retain control of their Whitechapel patch in the last decade on the twentieth century. I hadn t actually realised this was part of a series concerning the Butler family in Whitechapel, none of which I had read, and aside from the sheer array of characters which occasionally got confusing I don t think I needed to. I enjoyed the feel of the novel, I liked the sense of place and while quite a few characters are distinctly unpleasant I generally liked reading about them all. A tale full of family secrets, betrayals, violence and the weaving of all the strands together. It worked well and made for a good read. You can follow Cathy on Twitter: @Cerysthepup

Angie Rhodes London, the East End, and the Butler family rule it, with Queenie calling the shots. Everything should be rosy for the family, people don't mess with them, people are afraid of them, but what happens when brother crosses brother? Michael and Vinnie are brothers, will do anything for the family and each other. Michael is a little easier going than Vinnie, who is a killer, bumping off his wives, when he becomes bored, nobody knows he kills them, but Michael has a nagging doubt in the back of his head. Queenie, the head of the family will have nothing said about her boys, believing every lie they tell, as for her grandsons, Daniel and Lee, a chip off the old block. As for Queenie s daughter, well, she is nothing like them, so they leave her to her own life. Tainted Love is a page turner, a must read for fans of Martina Cole and Mandasue Heller. Marks out of ten? ten! Celia Cohen Not a comfortable book to read but somehow compelling. I don't quite know what to say about this book. I started off disliking it and wondering why I was reading it. I thought the Butler family were dreadful, I didn't like any of them even the children. The language was atrocious. I also found that there were so many characters I was getting confused as to who was who. But somehow or other by the time I was halfway through I was hooked and just had to know what happened next. Could things get any worse? Well they did. It reminded me very much of a Martina Cole book. Jan Kirkcaldy I knew I was in for something different as soon as I opened this book. Knowing little about gangland London, other than the Krays of course, I was quite keen to read a fictional take on the subject. Interesting definitely, totally over the top and filled with unpleasant characters (even the children) whose answer to most problems involved in equal measure violence and murder. The Butler family were chronicled over thirty years and it made uncomfortable reading when you discovered how many of their own they had disposed of when surplus to requirements. Being unable to interact favourably with any of the people involved I found I

couldn t care about them There was just too much of everything even to the extent of introducing a supposed Mafia boss from Italy which seemed a step too far to take things seriously. I wanted to finish the book, which was well written and no doubt carefully researched. In a masochistic way I almost enjoyed it but found its contents somewhat laughable at the same time. The Butlers, their women, their crimes, their clubs and all the things that happened were individually possible (even today) but not surely en masse. But what do I know? The supposed love between the Butler family, their women and children was unconvincing. Did they or could they truly love anything or anybody? It wouldn t seem so. I enjoyed reading out of my comfort zone though and would actually recommend the book to others particularly those with more knowledge of the subject than me. I m glad I read it. Glenda Worth A true East End tale of a mob style lifestyle. The Butler brothers and families run their neighbourhood but many secrets and enemies set out to destroy them. A fast paced tale with twists and turns! Tainted Love sent to me to review for Lovereading is a fast paced story of the Butler family who rule the roost in their neighbourhood and are feared and respected by many. Michael is back together with Bella after a break neither of them knowing the secrets that they both have. The two sisters Queenie and Vivien are the matriarchs of the family and everyone goes to them for approval and help. Little Vinnie turns over a new leaf but he also has a dark secret which catches up with him eventually. As characters weave in and out of this novel we are taken to dark places, happy times and funny episodes making this a worthy novel to read. I couldn't put it down! Phylippa Smithson Felt frustrated reading this story. Great reading at times but it was hard work. Too many characters, too many plots and no joined up finale to each plot. The focus of the story is the Butler family over the generations. The Butlers are part of the criminal underworld of East End London and believe they are above the law. Their reputation precedes them and many live in fear of the family, with others scheming to retaliate for acts of violence inflicted on them. Lives have been lost and impacted by the Butlers. And beyond their murderous

ways, mistakes are made in relationships that serve to introduce the next generation of Butlers to carry on the good name. It s a great portrayal of the time which stretches across the 1980s to 2001 modern history being applied to everyday life. The characters are familiar in terms of being real people of their generation and of their ways so they are credible. But the thing I struggled with was that at the end of each era, the very engaging and compelling plot, abruptly ended and you had to get immediately into gear to learn of the lives of the next generation. If you are a soap addict, this might appeal. Or perhaps if you enjoy short stories. But for me, I like to have seen the each Part become books published in their own rights and a more conclusive end explored for each. Humaira Kauser Amazing, fast paced and hard to put down. I've never read anything by Kimberley Chambers before but now I understand the hype. Tainted Love is so gripping and compelling. Loved it so much and definitely recommend for fans of Martina Cole, Mandasue Heller, Jessie Keane and Kevin Lewis. https://www.instagram.com/cookie_bookie_/ Jayne Burton An exciting and sometimes chilling book making it hard to put down. An exciting and sometimes chilling book making it hard to put down. Amidst family ties and family lies Queenie Butler does her best to keep the family together. Written in a way to make you feel you are part of the family going through all their emotions, fears and anguish. A very good and surprising read. Les Wood Murder, Mystery, Mayhem and Mirth - You will be gripped with laughter as you follow the exploits of two club owners and their dysfunctional families. Not having read any of this author s work before I can't decide if this is a wind

up or a serious piece of work. The whole book is made up of clichés, stereotypes and hilarious 'hard men'. The story is outlined in the prologue so it's just a matter of how it happened and discovering the final 'shocking' ending. However you will need a wallchart to plot who is who, who is related to whom and who has done what to whom. None of the characters have any redeeming features; plot progress is stilted and dies out without explanation as time jumps. I could go on but have seen who the book is dedicated to so best not leave my address. I hope that the writer has had as many laughs writing this as I have reading it; 'have some of that you mug'; 'shaking so much I thought I had Parkinson's'; Stinky Susan, Dagenham Dave, Ben Bloggs?? I would recommend it but for all the wrong reasons. Martina Cole's crown is very safe. Sue Burton I cannot be very complimentary about this book I am afraid, it is another version of a Martina Cole book, not nice characters, did not like any of them and so far-fetched. Cathy Small They say that truth will out and that doesn't matter if you are one of the feared Butler family or someone who got caught in the wrong crowd. The Butler family has a reputation that you shouldn't ignore, they are both feared and respected in the East End but things are changing. The brothers have both done things they don't want the other to find out but the secrets will be shared and will cause a rift that may never recover. Plus there are new people on the block who are no longer afraid and want to hit the family at the very heart to destroy them. This graphically written book will draw you into the family whilst you start to fear their aggression & ability and then potentially their next move, you will start to want their success as their family faces each tribulation.
