MEMBER GUIDE SEASON

New Redhouse Arts Center Artistic Director Hunter Foster Announces His Inaugural Season

Transcription:

Dear Subscriber, The 2018 season is full of BIG, EXCITING shows featuring thrilling dance, great storytelling, and some of the most beautiful music ever written for the stage. Our subscribers will enjoy classics like you ve never seen them before, a hilarious double tour-de-force in the summer, and two recent Broadway hits making their debut on our stage. Along with exciting changes to the resort which you ve no doubt noticed while under construction this year, we re thrilled to offer subscribers additional discounts for 2018, making your subscription even more valuable. Lastly, in response to overwhelming input from our subscribers, we ve adjusted our performance schedule, so be sure to look at your renewal materials carefully! In a unique pairing to begin the season, we explore two shows set in turn of the century America. Making its Marriott Theatre debut, directed by audience favorite Nick Bowling (The King and I, Man of La Mancha, The Bridges of Madison County) is Broadway s beloved Ragtime, winner of Tony Awards for best score and best book. You ll be spellbound by this epic story of three distinctly American tales woven into one unforgettable tapestry. Following Ragtime, after recent sell-out runs of The King and I and South Pacific, we re beyond excited to bring back Rodgers and Hammerstein s first collaboration, Oklahoma! In 1993 we last presented Oklahoma! in celebration of the show s 50th Anniversary, so it only made sense to bring it back for its 75th Anniversary! You ll fall in love all over again with the cowboy, Curly, the farm girl, Laurie and their tale of adventure and pioneer spirit on the American frontier. Oklahoma! will be directed by Marriott Theatre Artistic Director Aaron Thielen (She Loves Me, Spring Awakening) and choreographed by Alex Sanchez (Newsies, Evita, Mary Poppins). In the summer is the long-running Off-Broadway hit, Murder for Two, a murder mystery like you ve never seen, featuring an eager detective and a dozen suspects, all performed by two actors who also play piano! Next up is the super swinging (and super funny!) Cy Coleman classic, Sweet Charity! Tunes like Big Spender and I m a Brass Band, paired with Neil Simon s wisecracking book and fantastic dance numbers make this a most anticipated Marriott Theatre revival! We close the 2018 season with our Marriott Theatre Insiders top choice from our recent season survey, Holiday Inn! The perfect family show for the holidays, Holiday Inn, based on the beloved film, is fresh from Broadway and features a slew of classic Irving Berlin tunes sure to light up our stage! As I mentioned, we ve heard your feedback, and altered the performance times of three shows for next year. If you re a Wednesday night, Thursday night or Saturday matinee subscriber, your shows will start a bit earlier next year. Additionally, our StagePass membership continues to grow and is now our most popular subscription option! We re expanding StagePass this season, and offering even more exclusive offers just for StagePass members. We expect many more of you to take advantage of this incredible value, so see the StagePass page later in this brochure, or give our box office a call to find out more. See you at the theatre! Sincerely, Terry James Executive Producer

Meghan Murphy, Danni Smith and Cassie Slater, Mamma Mia! (2017)

Directed by NICK BOWLING Choreographed by KENNETH L. ROBERSON At the dawn of a new century, everything is changing and anything is possible. Set in the volatile melting pot of turn of the century New York, three distinctly American tales are woven together that of a stifled upper-class wife, a determined Jewish immigrant and a daring young Harlem musician united by their courage, compassion and belief in the promise of the future. Together, they confront history s timeless contradictions of wealth and poverty, freedom and prejudice, hope and despair... and what it means to live in America. Written by the award-winning composer/lyricist team of Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens (Anastasia, Seussical), noted playwright Terrence McNally, and based on E.L. Doctorow s distinguished novel, this acclaimed musical is filled with pageantry, emotion and hope, bursting onto the stage like no other musical. Opens January 24, 2018

Directed by AARON THIELEN Choreographed by ALEX SANCHEZ Opens April 11, 2018 One of the finest examples of American Musical Theatre, Rodgers and Hammerstein s first collaboration, OKLAHOMA!, returns to the Marriott Theatre in a special 75th Anniversary Production. You ll fall in love all over again with the cowboy, Curly, the farm girl, Laurey and their tale of adventure and pioneer spirit on the American frontier. The beloved story is one of our subscribers most requested shows, and we re thrilled to bring it back for such a momentous season after our last production celebrated the show s 50th anniversary!

The perfect blend of music, mayhem and murder! Opens July 3, 2018 Officer Marcus Moscowicz is a small town policeman with dreams of making it to detective. One fateful night, shots ring out at the surprise birthday party of Great American Novelist Arthur Whitney and the writer is killed fatally. With the nearest detective an hour away, Marcus jumps at the chance to prove his sleuthing skills with the help of his silent partner, Lou. But whodunit? Did Dahlia Whitney, Arthur s scenestealing wife, give him a big finish? Is Barrette Lewis, the prima ballerina, the prime suspect? Did Dr. Griff, the overly-friendly psychiatrist, make a frenemy? Everyone is a suspect in MURDER FOR TWO, a hilarious musical murder mystery with a twist: One actor investigates the crime. The other plays all of the suspects. And they both play the piano! A zany blend of classic musical comedy and madcap mystery, this fast and funny whodunit is a highly theatrical duet loaded with killer laughs.

Hey Big Spender... e Opens September 5, 2018 Spend a little time with SWEET CHARITY. The dance-filled, groovy musical comedy inspired by Federico Fellini s Nights of Cabiria, SWEET CHARITY explores the turbulent love life of Charity Hope Valentine, a hopelessly romantic but comically unfortunate dance hall hostess in New York City. With a tuneful, cool, mid-1960s score by Cy Coleman (Little Me, City of Angels, Barnum), sparkling lyrics by Dorothy Fields (Annie Get Your Gun, Seesaw, Redhead), and a hilarious book by Neil Simon, SWEET CHARITY captures all the energy, humor, and heartbreak of life in the Big City for an unfortunate but irrepressible optimist. Features the songs Big Spender, If My Friends Could See Me Now, There s Gotta Be Something Better Than This, and I m a Brass Band.

Direct from Broadway! Opens November 7, 2018 Irving Berlin s HOLIDAY INN tells the story of Jim, who leaves the bright lights of show business behind to settle down on his farmhouse in Connecticut but life just isn t the same without a bit of song and dance. Jim s luck takes a spectacular turn when he meets Linda, a spirited schoolteacher with talent to spare. Together they turn the farmhouse into a fabulous inn with dazzling performances to celebrate each holiday, from Thanksgiving to the Fourth of July. Based on the classic film, this joyous musical features thrilling dance numbers, laugh-outloud comedy and a parade of hit Irving Berlin songs, including Blue Skies, Steppin Out With My Baby, Heat Wave, White Christmas, Shaking the Blues Away and many more. This year-round romance is sure to delight audiences!
