CITATION STYLE IN UNDERGRADUATE THESIS LITERATURE REVIEW Rezza Dewintha, Sudarsono, Wardah English Language Education Study Program of FKIP Untan Email: rezzadewintha@yahoo.com Abstract: This purpose of this research is to find out the citation styles in literature review that commonly used and the consistency in using it by students of English Language Education Study Program, Teacher Training and Education Faculty, Tanjungpura University Pontianak in years 2013. This research was descriptive research especially document analysis as the form of research. The sampling technique was purposive sampling. The samples were taken randomly from students who have graduated in year 2013 and have GPA 3,50 provided in English Study Program. There were seven samples. The data were collected by appliying documentary analysis, and the writer constructed instrument table to unpack evidence as tool as data collecting. The istrument used to examine the data was table of criteria of the citation formatting guidelines adapted from APA 6th Edition, MLA 7th Edition, and Penulisan Karya Ilmiah FKIP Untan 2013. The research findings shows, just one sample who write the literature review using correct citation, and consistenly. Key Word: Citation Style, Literature Review Abstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui bentuk kutipan di dalam kajian pustaka yang biasanya digunakan dan konsistensi dari penggunaanya oleh mahasiswa Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris, Fakultas Keguruan dan Ilmu Pendidikan, Universitas Tanjungpura, Tahun 2013. Penelitian ini adalah penelitian descriptif khususnya penelitian dokumen. Teknik sample yang digunakan adalah sampel acak dengan persyaratan. Samel diambil acak dari mahasiswa yang lulus pada tahun 2013 dengan IPK 3,50. Sample terdiri dari tujuh orang. Data dikumpulkan dengan teknik dokumen analisis, dan penulis juga membuat table instrumen untuk membongkar bukti-bukri sebagai alat pengumpul data. Instrument yang digunakan untuk mengolah data disebut table kriteria panduan format kutipan yang diadaptasi dari APA edisi ke-6, MLA edisi ke-7, dan Penulisan Karya Ilmiah FKIP 2013. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan, hanya satu sample yang memenuhi kriteria, dengan menuliskan kutipan dengan benar dan konsisten. Kata kunci: bentuk kutipan, kajian pustaka 1

C ollege students must be able to complete their study. They must produce a thesis on the scientific work. Thesis means a document submitted in support of candidature for an academic degree or professional qualification presenting the author's research and findings. In some contexts, the word "thesis" or a cognate is used for part of a bachelor s (undergraduate) or master s (postgraduate) course, while "dissertation" is normally applied to a doctorate (Ph.D), while in others, the reverse is true (Breimer, 2005). Certainly, thesis writing is not an easy thing to do. Because students are required to be able to think critically over the topics that will be under discussion. They must read a lot of literature, books and journals related to the title of their research also. Based on the similar research finding with title, Citation Style for Papers and Theses In Economics Using Chicago Manual of Style (Fiedman, 1986), stated that If you use another author s exact words, you must enclose the passage in quotation marks and cite the source, including page number. Lengthy passages (more than two or three sentences) should be indented from both margins, single spaced, and presented without quotation marks (but still cited appropriately). And the result of his reseacrh show that student still face the difficulties in using the correct citation style. Bacause of producing good quality theses is a dream of a college student which can be read and used by other students for information. Julianto (2013) claims, Good thesis can be seen from the appearance of the thesis, the structure of thesis, the writing technique, the citation style, the language usage, the unity, and research methodology. Because of those requirements for a good thesis should be, students must keep working hard to produce it. Based on the interview with the college students who are working with theses, they have difficulty in writing literature review. It comes from various reason. First, one will face the difficulty to find the sufficient reference to enhance their writing. Second, the lack of knowledge about citation styles that commonly used in writing. Next factor is the lack of knowledge about the citation style for a thesis. The reluctance of students to read the Pedoman Penulisan Karya Ilmiah book that has been distributed by the faculty since they become a new student first. So this causes misguided student will function the actual book is also another reason. Based on the above reasons it is interesting to investigate the citation style used by the graduate students theses. This study is designed to describe the citation styles used in theses. This research investigate the consistency of the use of citation. The research data are gathered from the thesis literature review (Chapther II). The subject of this study is taken by theses writing by students graduate in the Year of 2013. METHOD In this part, the researcher discussed design of research, object of research, technique and toll of data collecting, and data analysis applied to the current research work. They are well discussed as follows: It cannot be denied that students will face some difficulty in writing their literature review with the correct citation formatting from the starting point till the 2

end of their literature review. It is also not easy to make their writing still on the track, it means that they did not make the plagiarism and consistent with citation style that they have chosen before. This condition has led the writer s concern about finding out the students consistency in writing literature review. This is in line with the aim of a descriptive research project is to provide a picture of situations as they naturally happen. Thus, the writer used descriptive research because it possibly allowed the writer to better understand how students choose the citation style and their consistency in their writing over literature review. Because of the object of this research is pertinent to document, the researcher applied document analysis as the form of research. This research was a kind of qualitative descriptive research design; particularly text analysis which is to examine the literature review section of students theses. The literature review section chosen based on the assumption that it tasks students/writers to demonstrate their critical and evaluate sense in their writing, and in the literature review can be found many experts says. From that, the writer knows how student develop their ability in understanding in applied the citation style format in their writing, and in the literature review also writer can see their consistency while using the citation style format that they choose in the beginning. The object of this research, therefore, was the students theses of English Languange Education Study Program submitted in year 2013 of Teacher Training and Education Faculty of Tanjungpura University. Having the main concern of this research was on the description of the phenomena rather than generalization, purposive sampling technique was applied. The samples were taken randomly from students who have graduated in year 2013 and have GPA 3,50 provided in English Study program. The number of samples took are seven theses. By using this technique enable the researcher to describe and explain what is happening within a smaller group of people. Finally, this could provide insights into the behavior of the wider research population. The writer employed documentary analysis that was perceived appropriate technique because this research was a kind of the content analysis. In attempt to support the technique, the writer constructed instrument table to unpack evidence as tool of data collecting. The instrument used to examine the data was a table of criteria of the citation formatting guidelines adapted from APA 6th Edition, MLA 7th Edition (taken from Perdue.owl site) and Penulisan Karya Ilmiah FKIP UNTAN 2013. The writer applied four criteria (Uncategorized, FKIP, APA, and MLA Style) to see students understanding in applied citation style in their writing, and from this writer can see also students who can determined the citation style while they write their literature review, and this section will call uncategorized citation style. It means, the citation style did not include in one of the citation criteria that mentioned before (FKIP, APA, and MLA). This decision was based on the writers perception that it was aimed to see the citation style and the consistency in literature review writing only. In relation to the instrument validation, the writer has consulted it to the expert. In attempting to analyze the data, content analysis was used to examine the literature review sections gathered. It is the method to analyze qualitative data, particularly, in the content of written communication or documents. Elo & Kyngas (2007) stated that content analysis is a method of analyzing written, verbal or visual communication messages. In this case, the documents were referred to the literature review which using content analysis bring the writer enhance understanding of the data. It is because content analysis makes replicable and valid inferences from data to their context, with the purpose of providing knowledge, new insights, a representation of facts and a practical guide to action. Moreover, it is a systematic and objective as a means of describing and quantifying phenomena. It is for the sake of attaining a condensed and broad description of the phenomena which the outcome of the analysis is concept or categories describing the phenomenon. Usually the purpose of these concepts or categories is to build up a model, conceptual system, conceptual map or categories based on Elo & Kyngas (2007). Therefore, it is perceived as an apt method since the aim of this research to catch the evident or facts by means of categories describing the phenomenon. In order to make this research became more obvious, the steps of data analysis were needed. The writer followed some steps below: Determining the unit of analysis; In this stage, the writer determined the unit of analysis. The writer used vignette as a single unit of analysis and give it code for each vignette based on the table of specification. Vignette, in this research, means a short piece of written text that focuses on one moment or gives a trenchant impression about an idea or object. Categorizing the data; In this stage, the writer sorted the data into categories provided. It involved four categories: uncategorized, FKIP, APA, and MLA. In this last stage; the writer explained and analyzed the result of data analysis on the previous steps in order to gain clear description and information about the category of analysis. The analysis gave the picture of students applied citation style and their consistency in literature review writing. FINDINGS AND DISCUSSION Findings This section displays the results of qualitative analysis of data collected. The qualitative analysis of students theses shows what citation style that is often used by them and the consistency while applied the citation style. In this case, writer found that the participants got trouble while writing literature review. They have 4

problems in their writings or in the literature review on their writing or also called as a participant in this case. Almost none of the overall use citation style consistently. But the use of citation style is a mixture and not in a disordered state. Beside that in this case the participant is a university student of Teacher Training and Education Faculty of Tanjungpura University should use a reference or citation formatting style for UNTAN s Students as a form of uniformity, but it was hard to find the participants that used FKIP Citation Style in their theses. The following are finding that occurred during the study. The finding of the present study will be described and explained in detail. Then, it will show mistake in the writing of citations in the literature reviews based on the guidlines in the Chapther III Vignette #1 Moreover,McCallum (1980,p.ix)u said that games automatically stimulate student s interest; a properly introduced game can be one of the highest motivating techniques. Crookal as cited in YOLADELDILI & ARIKAN (2011)u argued that games are advantages at reduce anxiety, increase positive feeling and improve self-confidence because learners do not afraid of punishment or critic while practicing the target language freely. (Written by F121080**) Paragraph begins with a quote from an expert and then followed by the statement of the expert. Whereas the previous paragraph also contains a declaration of an expert without a detailed explanation of the quote used in the paragraph. In addition, the citation form as this is not included in any category. Then write the name of an expert in this excerpt as a whole capitalize when there was no such thing in the guide. Writing the name of experts that more than one person is correct because using the "&" but the use of capital letters is an advanced problem. At first this thesis found 22 citations to the details of eleven (11) uncategorized citation style, one (1) FKIP Style and ten (10) APA Style. Vignette #2 MLA style is especially useful in today s research environment, and humanities scholars, and librarians in the field of language and over other documentation system. The last Chicago style is used in literature, history, arts, sciences, and social sciences (University of Chicago Press, 2010, p.655) A Vignette #3 The researcher should be able to convince readers why the research must be done (Purwana, et al.,2012) M Vignette #4 The researcher discusses research variable conceptually from expert s idea (Purwana, et al.,2012) M (Written by F121080**) A similar incident also occurred in participant number two in this study. Here it can be seen that the participant number two does not use citation styles regularly or properly. Because the literature review can be found many other types 5

of citations. There are twelve (12) citations in the literature review. Consisting of one (1) uncategory, nine (9) APA Style, and two (2) MLA style. Vignette 5 Griffiths (2006, p.153)u argues that pragmatics is about the use of linguistics acts and the contexts in which they are performed. Vignette 6 Wyatt 92006, p.i) U stated that a phrasal verb is a verb formed from two (or sometimes three) parts: a verb and an adverb or preposition. That is the type of use that is inconsistent citation. So the literature review found many various forms of citation. Though the use of citation is clear and can be tailored to the needs of the study. In this third literature review can be found that does not match the type of quote categories with a variety of forms. But also found APA and MLA form, and not found FKIP style. This study found twenty-three (23) citations in the literature review. Which consists of sixteen (16) uncategories citation style, two (2) APA Style, and five (5) MLA style. Listening was also regarded as the ability to understand spoken language (Ranking, 1952:847)U Vignette #10 Still in the same side of what can be defined from comprehension, Rost (2002)A give more explanatiom about it. Vignette #11 Listening is vital in the language classroom because it provides input for the learners. Without understanding input at the right level, any learning simply can not begin. (Rost,1994:141-142)M (Written by F121070**) And see what happen in the fifth participant in this research. The result shows us: 6

(Written by F121070**) Results of the same study was found on the fourth and fifth participant. Which form of writing inconsistencies found in the literature review on the participant to four. Can still be found mixed citation style is not the same citation. There are fifteen (15) citations contained in the fourth of literature review. Which consists of nine (9) uncategorized citation, five (5) APA Style, and one (1) MLA Style. But in the fifth participant the writer found eighteen (18) Citations, that consists of eight (8) uncategorized citation style and ten (10) APA Style. Research continues on the sixth participant. It is surprising that the sixth participan is found that the authors use the citation with a very good and organized. Because from the beginning the author has selected to use the APA style. When examined, the use of APA style literature review continues until completed. There are 13 APA Styles in the literature review. Here the authors describe several examples of citations in APA style format used by participant number six. Vignette #14 According to him critical thinking is active, persistence, and careful consideration of a belief or supposed form of knowledge in the light of the ground which support it and the further conclusions to which it tends (Dewey,1909,cited in Fisher, 2001,p.5)A (Written by F121090**) Vignette #15 You think things through yourself, raise questions yourself, and find relevance information yourself (Fisher, 2001, p.5)a Vignette #16 Fisher (2001)A identifies a number of characteristics of critical thinker which include being able to identify conclusion, reasons, and assumptions; and able to judge well the quality of an arguement, including its reasons, assumptions and evidence. (Written by F121080**) And research in the last participant or the participant to seven, indicating that some ambiguity still occur on college student when writing their literature review. Because the things that are found in the participant number 1-5 is found again in seventh participant. There are nine (9) citations, consisting of six (6) uncategorized citations and three (4) APA Style. 7

Discussion The study consisted of seven students' theses that have been analyzed the content of the literature review in terms of writing citations. The purpose of this section is to analyze to find the use of the dominant type of citation that is frequently used by students, especially students of English Education of FKIP UNTAN graduates in 2013. Besides that, this study also aims to see that there is a consistent attitude in students when using other types of citation. Due to the use of citation is very closely related to the content of the research to be performed. Whether it is academic research, social research, the environment, or even history. The use of citation that is not in the correct rules can be found during the study period. Of the seven participant, found only one participant (participant number six) that consistently use the citation. That participant was using APA Style. The rest still use it mix citation (consists of more than one citation style). This is must be corrected, given that the thesis is a scientific product that should be able to demonstrate indirectly the quality of the author. To answer the first question of this study is what type of citation that is often used by students of English education, the answer is citation in the form of APA style. Because of the seven participants contained 53 uses APA Style, 52 including uncategorized style, 8 MLA style, and 1 FKIP Style. Then, to answer questions number two of this study, whether students of English Education used citation style is consistent or not, the answer is no. Because from this research shows, from the seven participant who has gone through in detail and in-depth research, showed that only one participant is the sixth participant that use the citation style consistently. The rest are not consistent in the use of citation. Because they consist of several types of citations in the literature review. In conclusion, the students had the awareness and capability of making right citation style in their literature review. However, it can not denied that the of participants still failed to complete their literature review with the right using of citation style and still be consistent in its use to the literature review is completed. From this findings, the writer assumed that students were actually able to write a right and good based on their citation format and guidelines, but still have difficulty to compelete the literature review with the right citation that has been choosen in the beginning until at the end of writing literature review to show the consistency of using it. CONCLUSIONS AND SUGGESTIONS Conclusions To conclude the first questions based on the research findings, the writer concluded that the students have shown their ability in writing citation in several format, APA, MLA and FKIP Style. But most of them still showed their errors because still use uncategorized citation. Uncategorized citation means the citation that was not include in the APA, MLA, and FKIP style. Because of that, the 8

citation that they used was incorrect if compared to the citation format and guidelines. To conclude the second research question based on the research findings, the writer concludes that they were not consistent while using the citation style. Because, in those findings shown that there are six from seven participants that still write their literature review with several kinds of citation. The writer could draw out the evidences that the students could make citation in their literature review in their thesis with several formats. But most of them still use incorrect citation format. Then, they have not been able to write their literature review with the same citation to show their consistency while using the citation. Suggestions The writer, in this occasion, would like to submit some constructive suggestions expected to be valuable ideas for the future students writers, particularly, the student of English Education Study Program of Language and Arts Department of Teacher Training and Education Faculty Tanjungpura University. They are as follows: (1) the future students writers are suggested to be aware while they write citation in their literature review, and be consistent just in one citation that have been chosen (2) for further research, it is suggested to investigate the students ability in writing their thesis with the right citation, especially FKIP Style. (3) the present study has observed seven theses from the students who have graduated in year 2013. To see whether the result obtained is similar, a replication of the study is needed.
