UNIT 5 5-S Scene: Around City Hall What is this? It is a festival. It is the Los Angeles Street Scene. The streets around City Hall are closed to cars for the festival. That is a welcome sign over the street. This festival is usually on the first weekend in October. The weather is usually nice in L.A. in the fall. It is often warm and sunny. There are many people on the streets and sidewalks. There are many boys and girls on the lawn in front of City Hall. What do people do at the festival? Children play inside large balloons on the grass. People watch many kinds of shows. Children draw on T-shirts. People sit on the grass and paint children's faces. There is lots of food at the festival. There are all kinds of food here: American, Japanese, Chinese, Mexican, Korean, Greek and many others. Are you hungry? What do you want to eat? People buy things at the festival. Do you want a T.V? What a crowd! There are thousands of people here. Do you see a bridge over the street? It connects City Hall with another building on the right. There are many booths at the festival. People come from all parts of L.A. They come from East L.A., South Central L.A., West L.A., Hollywood and Santa Monica. They eat, drink, and see many interesting things. They walk a lot too. Look at the woman with the red umbrella. That man without a shirt has a cup in his hand. There is a little truck with ice in the back. The ice is for drinks. It is hot today! Here is a family: mother, father, and son, in costume. People sometimes bring their dogs too. Many people buy ice cream on hot days. There's an interesting costume. 1

Look at all the people on the streets and on the bridge over the road. This street has many food booths. What kind of food do you like? There is a large crowd in front of this stage. There is a man with a black suit and roller skates on the stage. He has a microphone in his hand. Now there are eight dancers on the stage. The crowd likes the show. Many people in the crowd have hats on their heads because it is hot. They have sunglasses on too, because it is very sunny. Everyone has a good time at the Street Festival. Look! Those are the San Gabriel Mountains to the north. They are 6,000 to 10,000 feet high. That building on the left is very old. It is one of the first buildings in L.A. The kids like balloons. They also like the Children's Museum near City Hall. Here are some Hawaiian dancers with red dresses. Here are some other dancers. People sing and dance at the festival. That's a big balloon on top of the pole on the right. The Street Festival is around City Hall. Who is he? He sells kaleidoscopes. Look at him through the kaleidoscope. Here's another musical group. They play Brazilian music here every year. People have a good time at the festival. 2
