Diploma/BA (Hons) Music (Full-Time) - SH 420 1. OBJECTIVES The BA (Hons) Music programme is designed to meet high academic standards, respect the paradigms of best academic practice and reach up to international standards. The programme is designed to provide in-depth knowledge of music as a field of study from a theoretical and applied perspective; attain academic skills in the wide range of music performance, musicology, music education, commercial music and music industry, and public health. It responds to specific requirements in the field of music in Mauritius by providing a pertinent training for musicians of a future National (Youth) Orchestra of Mauritius; increasing the number of music teachers in educational institutions, music schools and also for individual coaching. It may also lead to further studies and/or employment in a number of sectors, namely Qualified instrumental teachers at music schools such as the Conservatoires; Qualified music educators in pre-primary, primary and secondary schools; Professional musicians in tourism and the entertainment industry; Professional music trainers/coaches in health tourism; Music experts in alternative/complementary therapies and wellness domains. Furthermore, the programme will provide an opportunity for the public at large to acquire an academic qualification in the field of music and provide a broad general education that is appreciated by employers in a number of professions requiring music. It may lead to further studies in various domains at post graduate level. It will promote a realistic self-estimation for responsible work in musical and musicrelated fields and encourage life-long learning. 2. GENERAL ENTRY REQUIREMENTS In accordance with the University General Entry Requirements for admission to undergraduate programmes. 3. PROGRAMME REQUIREMENTS Candidates having relevant experience but who lack General Entry Requirements will be considered as Mature Candidates or under Special Case Regulations. In addition, all candidates have to pass auditions which take place in June or July for admission to the next academic year. The audition consists of a theoretical examination and a live performance. Candidates will be required to submit their choice of instrument and their programme prior to the audition. The level in music of the candidates should be in line with international standards for analogous entrance examinations such as BA-audition at the CNSMD (Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse) Paris and ABRSM (Associated Board of the Royal School of Music) grade 8 or alternative grade approved by the Board of Examiners consisting of the Head of Department and selected lecturers. Holders of the Diploma in Music awarded by the University of Mauritius or alternative qualification may be directly admitted in Year 3 of the programme. They may, however, be required to complete some modules in Year 1 or Year 2. 1

Students may also be required, on the basis of the audition results, to enrol on a language module to enhance their writing skills in English and/or French. For language preparation, work will begin during the first year and continue until the required proficiency is established by examination. Language examinations will be given periodically throughout the academic year. 4. PROGRAMME DURATION Normal (Years) Maximum (Years) Diploma 2 3 Degree 3 5 Some modules will also be on offer as Stand Alone Modules. 5. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS FOR AWARD OF DIPLOMA AND DEGREE Breakdown is as follows: Core Instrumental Studies Field Work Research Project Total Diploma 42 18 60 Degree 62 30 8 5 105 For the award of the BA (Hons) Music, the student must obtain at least 105 credits, including the 60 credits already earned at Diploma level. 6. EXIT POINT A student whose registration is on the point of being terminated, as a result of having his/her CPA < 40.0 at the end of an academic year and who has already repeated one year of study. Minimum Requirements for Diploma Award Students who have earned a minimum of 60 credits can exit with a Diploma in Music provided students have successfully completed the following modules: Year Module Code Module Title Credits Total Core MUSP 1001Y(1) Orchestral Studies 1 6 MUSTP 1002Y(1) Music Theory & Solfège 1 4 10 1 Instrumental MUSI 1001(5) Orchestra Instrument 1 8 Studies MUSI 1002(5) Piano Accompaniment 2 10 Core MUSP 2001Y(3) Chamber Music -1 & Orchestral Studies-2 6 2 MUST 2003Y(3) Methodology of Music Education 4 10 Instrumental Studies MUSI 2001(5) Orchestra Instrument - 2 8 8 Total = 38 of 60 credits 2

7. ASSESSMENT Maximum score of each module is 100 marks. Assessment will be based on a written examination of 2 to 3-hour duration (normally a 2-hour paper for modules carrying less than or equal to three credits, and a 3-hour paper for modules carrying six credits) and on continuous assessment done during the semester or year. The examination duration for modules assessed by 50% or more in continuous assessment may differ from the above. Relevant information will be provided to students prior to the delivery of the modules. An overall total of 50% for combined continuous assessment and written examination components would be required to pass the module, without minimum thresholds within the individual continuous assessment and written examination. The same criterion will apply for modules being assessed jointly. Note that all overall marks for the two semester modules will be considered and not the individual marks for each of the two semester modules. When a module contains more than 50% theoretical contents (modules coded MUST), assessment will be based on a written examination at the end of semester 1 or semester 2 or both. Continuous assessment The continuous assessment will count for 20-30% of the overall percentage mark of the module, except for other specific provision(s) in the programme structure. Appropriate attendance records shall be maintained by the academic staff for all types of continuous assessment included in the modules. A monitoring system will be designed by the lecturers in order to keep track of all student assignments (including presentations, projects, portfolios, class tests) for adequate moderation. Records of attendance and assignments (written, audio- or video-recorded, or any other form) shall be submitted by the lecturer to the Administrative Officer of the Examination Section of the Faculty/Centre in the last week of each semester. 100% continuous assessment: When a module contains more that 50% practical contents (modules coded MUSP, MUSI and MUSF), assessment will be based on continuous assessment only during both semesters. 50% continuous assessment: When a module contains 50% theoretical contents and 50% practical contents (modules coded MUSTP), then assessment will be based on both a written examination at the end of semester 1 or semester 2 or both and continuous assessment during both semesters. The continuous assessment will count for 50% of the overall percentage of the module. Special examinations (e.g. class tests) will be arranged at the end of semester 1 or semester 2 for exchange students who have registered only for one semester. In case of yearly modules, credits will be assigned on a pro-rata basis. 8. FIELD WORK Field work is included in the practical components of modules MUSF 2001(5) and MUSF 3001Y(5). The field work should, as far as possible, be carried out in line with the field of specialisation. A viva may be carried out after the completion of field work if deemed necessary by lecturers. These two modules include a strong research component. Relevant information will be provided to students prior to delivery of the modules. 3

9. RESEARCH PROJECT Students will be expected to complete a research project based on an investigative undertaking, a structured, organised experiential learning including design work or field work in Year 3. The number of words in the project shall be between 6,000-8,000 words. The number of words applies only to the main body of the research project including all footnotes and references but excluding all tables, schemes, figures which may form part of the main body, material before the main body and material after the main body. Three copies of the Dissertation/Research Project (two spiral-bound copies and one copy in a single PDF text file on electronic storage media) should be submitted to the Faculty/Centre Registry. In addition, a soft copy of the dissertation in a single PDF text file should be uploaded on the "Turnitin Platform, in the final assignment submission link indicated by the Programme Coordinator. All of the above should be submitted not later than the last working day (i.e. excluding Saturdays, Sundays and Public Holidays) of March of the academic year by 4.00 p.m. at latest. 4
