4. Installation of the 3", 5", 7" and 9" Multiple Entry Closures A. New Construction (End Cap Installation Prior to Splicing) 4.01 Cut off tips of cones to be used as close as possible to the end of cone. Refer to Figure 1. 4.02 Slit cones to the approximate cable diameter. 4 slits at 90 degree intervals around the circumference of the cone are recommended. Refer to Figure 2. Figure 1 Cut off tips of cones 4.03 Slide end caps onto cables (cone end first) so they do not interfere with splicing 4.04 Bond cables and splice per standard procedure. Figure 2 - Slit cones 4.05 Position one end cap so the end of the cone is 380 m m (15") from the center of the splice. If installation is vertical, the lower end cap should be positioned first. 4.06 Wrap the end cap cones with at least 2 half-lapped layers of 88T Vinyl Tape. The tape should extend from the base of the cone to at least 50 mm (2") past the end of the cone to ensure good adhesion to the cable. Refer to figure 3. 4.07 Assemble the two closure body halves over splice, matting the tongue and groove seams. It is helpful to temporarily tape the body halves together in this position with a wrap around the center. Figure 3 Tape end cap onto cable 4.08 Slide closure body into end cap and fasten together with a hose clap. Refer to Figure 4. 4.09 Slide the second end cap over the closure body, secure with a hose clamp and tape to the cable as described in 4.06. B. Closure Installation on Existing Splice 4.10 Cut off tips of cones to be used as close as possible to the end of cone. Refer to Figure 1. Figure 4 Slide closure body into end cap and fasten 4.11 Split the cones and end caps to be used as shown in Figure 5. 4.12 Cut three additional slits at 90 degree intervals around the circumference of the cone. These slits should be to the approximate cable diameter. Note: This is an addition to the cut described above. Refer to Figure 5. Figure 5 Split the cones and end caps
4.13 Place the end caps on the cables. Position one end cap so the end of the cone is 380 mm (15") from the center of the splice. If the installation is vertical, the lower end cap should be positioned first. 4.14 Hold end cap in place by taping the cone ends of the positioned end cap to the cable with 1-2 wraps of 88T Vinyl Tape. Refer to Figure 6. Figure 6 Taping the ends and installing Clex Strip 4.15 Cut Flex Strip to proper length and place in cut (narrow leg outside). Refer to Figure 6. 4.16 Wrap entire shoulder area of cap with 2 layers of highly stretched LR Tape. Refer to Figure 7. Note: Vinyl tape is NOT recommended for wrapping shoulder area. Figure 7 Wrap should of end cap 4.17 Wrap the end cap cones with at least 2 half-lapped layers of 88T Vinyl Tape. The tape layers should extend from the base of the cone to a minimum of 50 mm (2") onto the cable sheath. 4.18 Place the two closure body halves over the splice and assemble. It is helpful to temporarily tape the body halves together in this position with a wrap around the center. 4.19 Slide the closure into the taped end cap and fasten the two together with a hose clamp. 4.20 Slide the second end cap over the closure body, tape as described in steps 4.14 through 4.17 and secure with a hose clamp. Refer to Figure 8. Figure 8 - Completed Installation
5. Installation of the 10 Port/Single Entry Closure Note: This closure is intended to be installed on new construction only. 5.01 Place the single entry tapered end cap on the cable as described in steps 4/01 through 4.03. 5.02 Insert a stub cable into one of the ports of the 10 port cap as far as it will go without forcing it. 5.03 Cut the rubber nipple approximately 20 mm (3/4") smaller than the position determined in 5.02. Repeat with each stub toe spliced. Refer to Figure 9. 5.04 Remove sheath and shield of stub cable exposing enough free conductor length for splicing. Leave core wrap in place to protect conductors during presplicing set up. Figure 9 Cut rubber nipple 20 mm (3/4") smaller 5.05 Place tape around end of core wrap on each cable to avoid splits and to aid in passing cable ends through end cap openings. Wrap a temporary layer of 88T Vinyl Tape around the exposed aluminum shield. This prevents damage to the internal tapered nipple of the multiple end cap when the stub cables are pulled through. 5.06 Apply cable lubricant to the sheath and inside of end cap nipples. Pass cable ends through end cap openings so that cable sheaths extend 25 mm (1") beyond nipple end. If several cables are to enter the multiple end cap, start with the back port and work toward the front. 5.07 Bond cables and splice per standard procedure. 5.08 Place the two closure body halves over the splice and assemble. It is helpful to temporarily tape the body halves together with a wrap around the center. 5.09 Slide the closure body into the rubber end cap and secure with a hose clamp. 5.10 Slide the single end cap over the open end of the closure body and fasten with a hose clamp. Refer to Figure 10. Figure 10 - Installed closure 5.11 Wrap the single entry end cap cone with at least 2 half-lapped layers of 88T Vinyl Tape. The tape must extend from the base of the cone to at least 50 mm (2") past the end of the cone to ensure good adhesion to the cable.
