Introduction One of the main challenges in running a large organization such as the Kennedy Vocal Music Department is to communicate membership requirements, benefits, responsibilities and other general information to its members. The purpose of this handbook is to compile in one location, all of the necessary information about the John F. Kennedy Vocal Music program needed by students and parents to become fully functioning members of the organization. It is hoped that by publishing this Choir Handbook, students, parents, administrators, and community members will be better informed about the choirs and their related activities. Much of the information contained in this handbook will apply to all of the choirs in the program, while some of it will apply only to one choir or another. Please make sure that you read all of the information pertaining to your involvement or interest in the program. John F. Kennedy Choral Organizations Concert Choir (Grades 10, 11, 12) Membership is open to students (Gr. 10-12) at Kennedy through audition only. This class meets every other day during 4 th period and is the core ensemble in the Kennedy Vocal Music Department. The choir performs extensively at Kennedy, in the local community, and throughout the country. Concert Choir is on a rotating tour schedule, with the group traveling every two years. Students who wish to enroll in Happiness, Inc. must be enrolled in Concert Choir. This class requires specific concert attire and the payment of a $25.00 choir fee. Fee is waived for students on free/reduced lunch..5 credits/semester. Auditions are held each spring. Chamber Choir (Grades 10, 11, 12) Membership is open to all members of Concert Choir and Kennedy Chorale, by audition only. This choir meets every other day during 7 th period all year long. The course is designed to give our most talented singers an opportunity to rehearse and perform a wide variety of music from all style periods in a professional rehearsal environment. Chamber Choir will perform extensively at Kennedy, in the local community, and at competitions throughout the year. This class requires specific concert attire..5 credits/semester. Auditions are held each spring.

Kennedy Chorale (Grades 10, 11, 12) Membership is open to all students (Gr. 10-12). A voice placement audition is required, though no interested students will be turned away. This class meets every other day throughout the school year during 5 th period. This chorus is designed to continue building good vocal and performance techniques, more advanced music reading skills, and perform a higher level of literature. This class requires specific concert attire and the payment of a $25.00 choir fee. Fee is waived for students on free/reduced lunch..5 credits/semester. Enrollment open each semester. Kennedy Singers (Grade 9) Membership is open to any Kennedy student with freshman standing without audition. This class meets every other day throughout the year during 6 th period. The purpose of this class is to teach basic vocal and performance techniques, refresh music reading skills, and expose students to a wide variety of music literature. Freshmen who wish to audition for Chanteurs Show Ensemble or the 9th Grade Select Choir must be enrolled in Kennedy Singers. This class requires specific concert attire and the payment of a $25.00 choir fee. Fee is waived for students on free/reduced lunch..5 credits/semester. Enrollment open each semester. 9th Grade Select Choir (Grade 9) Membership is open to all members of Kennedy Singers by audition only. This group will be selected near the beginning of semester II and will begin meeting in early March. This class will meet every other day, 6 th period, beginning in March through the end of the school year, and is designed to give talented 9th grade singers an opportunity to perform more challenging choral literature in a smaller group setting. This class requires specific concert attire..5 credits/semester. Enrollment semester II only. Happiness, Inc. Show Ensemble (Gr. 11, 12) Membership is open to members of Concert Choir by audition only. Happiness is the premiere show choir at Kennedy High School and performs extensively at Kennedy, in the community, and around the nation. Happiness is comprised of students who desire an intense involvement with singing, dancing, and acting. The class meets on alternate days during semester I during 4 th period with 1-2 evening rehearsals per week (every Monday and occasional Thursdays). This class will also meet during the first part of semester II. This class requires a monthly fee that includes costuming, tour expenses, some meals, transportation, lodging,

choreography, and music arrangements..5 credits/semester. Auditions are held each spring. Protégé Show Ensemble (Gr. 9, 10, 11, 12) Membership is open to members of Kennedy Chorale and Concert Choir by audition only. Protégé is the prep show choir at Kennedy and is designed to prepare show choir students for upper level show choir experiences. Protégé is comprised of students who desire an intense involvement with singing, dancing, and acting. The class meets during 5 th period every other day during semester I, with 1-2 evening rehearsals per week (every Tuesday and occasional Thursdays). This class will also meet during the first part of semester II. This class requires a monthly fee that includes costuming, trip expenses, transportation, choreography, and music arrangement..5 credits/semester. Auditions are held each spring. Chanteurs Show Ensemble (Gr. 9) Membership is open to members of Kennedy Singers. Chanteurs is the 9 th grade show choir at Kennedy, and is designed to give students an introduction to the skills necessary for success in a show ensemble. The class meets during 6 th period every other day during semester I, with 1-2 evening rehearsals per week (every Thursday and occasional Tuesdays). This class will also meet during the first part of semester II. This class requires a monthly fee which includes costuming, trip expenses, transportation, choreography, music arrangement, and contest entry fees..5 credits/semester. Auditions are held each spring and fall. Moonlight Express Vocal Jazz Ensemble (Gr. 10, 11, 12) Membership is open to members of Concert Choir or Kennedy Chorale by audition only. This group performs jazz and popular music, often a cappella, at Kennedy and contests throughout the year. Moonlight meets every other day during 7 th period throughout the year..5 credits/semester. Auditions held each spring. Select Men s and Select Women s Ensembles (Gr. 11, 12) These two groups are pull out groups of the Concert Choir and meet in preparation for State Large Group Contest during semester II. These groups meet during Concert Choir class time and perform at Kennedy and at State Large Group contest. 0 academic credit (students receive Concert Choir credit). AP Music Theory (Gr. 11, 12) This is a traditional class offered for students with a serious interest in the study of the structure of music. Topics covered include notation, harmony, ear training, sight singing, music history and composition. Previous knowledge of basic musical concepts is required. The class meets every day during 3 rd period. Class is open to juniors and seniors with permission of the instructor, Mr. Ziegler. 1.0 AP credits/semester. Class is year-long. This is easy, and mostly common sense: Classroom Expectations 1) Be on time 2) Have all your materials a. Music b. Pencil c. Water bottle if you want to drink 3) Contribute positively, not negatively Consistent daily attendance and readiness for intense, disciplined rehearsal are essential for success. Students who tend to miss several school days throughout the year should reconsider their membership in the ensemble. A single absent student adversely impacts the group s choral sound. Please refrain from scheduling medical/dental/orthodontic/counseling appointments during choir. Unlike other courses, work cannot be made up. Students miss crucial time to hone their listening skills and polish their interpretation of the music together. Grading/Credit All of our courses are performance based. Missing performances is akin to missing a final exam in another class that you cannot make up. The performances listed below (also on the CHARMS calendar) are a required part of the course. All concerts are in the Kennedy Auditorium unless otherwise indicated below. All concerts also start at 7pm and have a 6:30pm arrival time for performers unless indicated below. Moonlight Express November 9 th, 2017 Premiere Concert December 9 th, 2017 Cocoa and Carols January 18 th, 2018 Dessert Concert February 5 th, 2018 State Jazz Contest @ TBA March 8 th, 2018 Going Out Concert Additional performances will be added after dates are released Grades will be determined based on student progress in a number of areas: tone quality, pitch accuracy, musicality, notation reading skills, sight reading skills, hand sign solfege skills, etc. These skills will be assessed in a number of ways including on a group basis, individual assessments with the directors, and computerized assessment. The grade students receive on their report card will be based on their ability to achieve the stated learning goals in the course. Attendance at rehearsals and performances is very important. Because rehearsal time cannot be made up, a student s grade will start to be negatively

impacted after 10% of rehearsals have been missed. Missing a performance can result in a 2 letter grade reduction in the class grade. Reasonable exceptions can be made, however, if a student knows they will be missing many rehearsals and/or concerts, a meeting with the director should occur prior to participation. The grade of A+ is reserved for those students who go above and beyond the normal coursework. Examples of students who receive A+ grades might be: All- State Chorus auditionees, Opus Honor Choir auditionees, Concert Choir officers, soloists, attendance at tutorials and sectionals, completion of items on the Great Wall of Musical Skill, etc. Final note on grading: The Choral Directors reserve the right to exercise their discretion to modify the grading scale to meet the individual educational needs of any student. Robe and Costume Care Choir robes and costumes are owned by the school and loaned out to individual students with the understanding that they will take care of them. This demands that while a student is in possession of a robe or outfit, reasonable care will be exhibited concerning the wearing and storage of them. While the choir is in transit from one place to another, care should be taken so that the robe does not get soiled or wrinkled. The Kennedy Choral League manages the cleaning and maintenance of all robes and costumes. Cleaning and maintenance of the robes and costumes is funded by the music fee paid at the beginning of the school year. Concert Attire, Uniformity, and Appearance Concert attire is intended to give a uniform appearance to all choir members. Full uniformity does not accept variations in individuals. Therefore, all choir members must look as much alike in robes and outfits as possible. In order to achieve this end, all robes must fit in a uniform manner, and hair must be moved off of the face. If make up is worn, it is not to be used excessively. In general, the following items also apply to particular choirs, as they complete the need for uniformity. Concert Choir, Kennedy Chorale, Chamber Choir Boys: Tuxedo (provided), black socks, black shoes (provided) Girls: Dress(provided), nude hose, black shoes (provided)

Kennedy Singers Boys: Robe (provided), white dress shirt, black dress pants, black socks, black shoes Girls: Robe (provided), white blouse/shirt, black skirt/pants, black dress shoes, nude hose Other vocal ensembles may wear different outfits. Members of Happiness, Protégé, and Moonlight Express should consult their director regarding outfit requirements. Kennedy Choral League Essential to the operation of any organization of this nature is a parent booster group. The Kennedy Choral League is the group behind the Kennedy Choirs. Without these seemingly tireless workers, we would not be able to provide students with all of the opportunities to perform currently available to them. The Kennedy Choral League (KCL) is made up mostly of parents who have students in the Kennedy Choirs, but alumni, alumni parents, directors, and friends of the program are also invited to be a part of KCL. School district funding is extremely limited and used basically for the purchase of choral music. The KCL sponsors fundraising activities necessary to offset the department s expenses. Perhaps the most important contribution of KCL is the person-power provided to our choral groups. Members volunteer their time, talent and treasure in many ways, including: Publishing a newsletter, sewing costumes, chaperoning trips, playing piano, etc. We encourage everyone to get involved in the Kennedy Choral League. We need all kinds of skills and there are mentors who are willing to train new volunteers! Financial and Student Account Information One of the biggest adjustments families need to make when a child goes to high school are the costs associated with the various activities in which students participate. Here in the Vocal Music Department, we have developed a large, comprehensive program without much financial help from the school district. KCL provides a number of fundraising activities throughout the year. We host events, sell items, charge fees, etc. to raise the money needed for our programs. One feature of our fundraising, that is very important to understand, is that all of the groups in the program fund themselves. That means, if you are not in a show choir, money you fundraise will not be used to pay for items in the show choir. The people who benefit from your hard work are you and the other members of the groups of which you are a member. One fee that applies to everyone is the Music Fee. This fee is $25.00 and covers your participation in Concert Choir, Kennedy Chorale, or Kennedy Singers for the entire school year. This fee is used for the purchase, cleaning, and repair of tuxes, dresses, robes and stoles, purchase and repair of music folders, purchase of new music, and as an emergency fund for any major expenses that may occur during the school year. The music fee will be billed directly to your student s bill at Kennedy in early September. If you are on free or reduced lunch, you are exempt from the fee. Student Accounts All students will have the opportunity to raise funds that will be placed in an individual student account in their name. These accounts are administered by Mr. Ziegler and deposited with the building bookkeeper in the Kennedy Student Activity Account. These funds can be used for any vocal music expense including the music fee, show choir fees, spring tour, or can be transferred to any other fine arts account. Credit balances (funds raised in excess of expenses) remain in the student s account until they leave Kennedy High School either through graduation or some other reason. Students and parents can access information about their FUNDRAISING activity by logging in to the CHARMS system, which will be explained later in this handbook. CHARMS only tracks the amount of money raised through vocal music fundraisers. It does not track fees and payment of fees, which is done through the Kennedy Bookkeeper. Look in CHARMS for: - How much you raised in the last fundraiser - How much money is in my account that I can apply to my show choir bill - The current balance of fundraising profit in my account

Go through the Kennedy Bookkeeper for: - How much you owe for show choir - Making payments for fees including show choir and choir trips Under Iowa Law, money paid into Student Activity Accounts can only be refunded under very special circumstances. Students almost never meet this criteria, so refunds are almost never issued. It is a bit complicated, but use this as a rule of thumb: If you plan on doing ANY fundraising in the future, reduce the amount you pay in to your student s account by the amount of profit you expect to get from the fundraising. This will ensure that you do not get into a situation where you over pay your child s bill without the ability to get a refund. Another simple way to help remember this is to realize that we are only allowed to refund payments for an event that was cancelled. So what can happen if I end the year with a non-refundable credit balance? There are a couple options: 1) If the student has a sibling currently at Kennedy in any performing arts program, the balance can be transferred to that sibling. 2) If the student has a sibling entering Kennedy as a freshman next fall and that sibling participates in a performing art, the balance can be transferred to that sibling. 3) If options 1 and 2 are not available, the funds revert to the Vocal Music General Fund.

Fees and Fines Standard Fees for membership in the Kennedy Choirs are as follows: Concert Choir, Kennedy Singers, Kennedy Chorale Music Fee $25.00 per year Again, these fees are waived if the student is on free/reduced lunch. Fines Any student who loses or damages any equipment on loan to them will be responsible for the full replacement value of the item lost or damaged. CHARMS Office Assistant CHARMS Office Assistant is the main information sharing portal that we will use in the Kennedy Vocal Music Department. On CHARMS you can see our event calendar, download important documents and much more! How Do I Access CHARMS? 1) Go to www.charmsoffice.com 2) Click LOGIN in the upper right hand corner. 3) Click Parents/Students/Members. In the login box that appears type: jfkennedychoir and click ENTER CHARMS 4) On the next screen that comes up, in the Student Area Password box, type in your child s student ID number and hit enter. (Also on this screen, you will see a few buttons that allow access to items without logging in to your child s account. You can access the calendar and handouts at this point. For information specific to your child, enter your child s student ID and hit enter.) 5) On the next screen you will see several large buttons that allow you to access various information. Explore around the options!

6) Please make sure to update any parent or student contact information if this data changes. This will ensure that you receive all emails sent out via Charms. We will send out more specific information about CHARMS throughout the year, but pay special attention to the most important feature for families: the calendar. If you access the calendar WITHOUT logging in to your child s account, you will only see our public performance events listed. If you log in to your child s account and then view the calendar, you will see all the events that apply to your child, including relevant show choir rehearsals. Please make sure you are aware of which version of the calendar you are viewing. When you click on an event in the calendar, a new window will open up giving you additional information about the event. If you have questions about how to use CHARMS or about anything you see on CHARMS, please send either Mr. Muters or Mr. Ziegler an email.

General Information Payments Make all checks payable to Kennedy High School. We accept checks, money orders, or credit card payments. Credit card payments must be made to Stephanie Cory, the Kennedy Bookkeeper, in the Bookkeeper s Office next to the library, or online through the SchoolCashOnline system. Remember that credit card payments are subject to an additional processing fee Choir Designations You will see and hear some of the choirs at Kennedy referred to as core choirs. Our core choirs are Kennedy Singers, Kennedy Chorale, and Concert Choir. These are the three main vocal ensembles in our program. Membership in one of these ensembles is required in order to participate in any other ensemble we offer. The core choirs perform three concerts at Kennedy each year, as outlined earlier in this handbook. Music Fee A mandatory $25.00 music fee is due from all students in the vocal program. This fee covers the costs for concert attire and folder/music usage. Students on free/reduced lunch are exempt from this fee. This fee will appear on your Kennedy billing statement. Fair Share In an attempt to spread the workload of fundraising for a large vocal music department like Kennedy s, we employ a concept called Fair Share. Under Fair Share, the first $25.00 of profit from student fundraising efforts go to the Kennedy Vocal Music department. After that $25.00 threshold is met, 100% of all profits from fundraising go into an individual account in the student s name. Fair Share is applied only once per academic year, no matter how much profit a student makes through fundraising. Fair Share proceeds are used for core choir programming and equipment needs that are not funded by the district. The Fair Share amount is NOT to be considered a bill to be paid by students and families. It is meant only to come from direct fundraising efforts. If a student does no fundraising through the vocal department, or raises less than $25, no payment is expected.

Explanation of Events There are so many events in the vocal department it is hard to keep them all straight. Below is a list of our major events and a brief description of what you can expect to see at that event. KCL Meet & Greet The Meet & Greet is KCL s kick-off event. The year s event will be held on Thursday, September 14 th at 6pm in the Kennedy Cafeteria. All choral students and their families are welcome to attend, though the event is geared around providing information to families new to the Kennedy Vocal Program. There will be explanations of events, fundraising opportunities, and volunteer opportunities, as well as a chance to ask questions of the directors and veteran parents. Opus Honor Choir Auditions Opus is the 9 th grade All-state choir. Being selected for Opus is one of the highest honors a 9 th grade singer can achieve in Iowa. Freshmen singers will be invited to audition for Opus by Mr. Muters. This involves a taped audition and is completed in September in class. Selected students are notified in October, and will participate in a day-long rehearsal and concert experience the week before Thanksgiving in Ames, IA. Candidates for Opus must be enrolled in Kennedy Signers. See Mr. Muters for more information. Auditions are not open to the public. All-State Auditions and Festival On October 21 st, 600 singers from around Iowa will be selected to participate in the Iowa All-State Chorus. All-State is the highest honor bestowed on high school musicians in the State of Iowa. Mr. Ziegler will select 28 singers from the Chamber Choir to complete the audition process. These 28 singers will travel to Manchester, IA to audition in quartets. Those selected will participate in the All-State Festival the week before Thanksgiving, along with their band and orchestra colleagues. Candidates for All-State must be enrolled in Chamber Choir. See Mr. Ziegler for more details. Auditions are not open to the public. State Solo/Small Ensemble Contest - This event is sponsored by the Iowa High School Music Association (IHSMA). Students studying private voice with a teacher and members of the Chamber Choir participate in this event. At this contest, solo singers get the chance to demonstrate their proficiency as a singer in front of a judge. They will receive written comments and a rating. Ensembles smaller than 24 are also eligible to participate for comments and a rating. They are not competing against other singers or groups. This contest will be held on Saturday, April 14 th at Washington High School. Judges can declare a performance in their center as Best in Center. If selected, those students will

participate in the Best in Center Recital held at ISU each May. This event is open for anyone to attend and is free of charge. State Large Group Contest - This event is sponsored by the Iowa High School Music Association (IHSMA) and will be held on Saturday, May 5 th at Linn-Mar High School. Participation in this event is limited to groups larger than 24 members. This year Kennedy will send the Concert Choir, Chamber Choir, and the combined choirs of Kennedy Chorale and the 9 th Grade Select Choir. (Due to budget cuts and the reduction of our assistant director position, we will not be able to prepare a Men s or Women s Choir for this event, as has occurred in the past.) Groups perform before a panel of judges for comments and a rating. They are not competing against other groups. This event is open for anyone to attend in the audience for a small admission fee. The two state events listed above will feature performances by students and groups from other high schools in our part of the state, in addition to those of Kennedy students. Show Choir Premiere Concert This is the first public performance of the show choirs and Moonlight Express Vocal Jazz Ensemble. They will perform whatever portion of their shows is ready to be seen, generally not the entire show. This year s event will be held on Thursday, November 9 th. Cocoa and Carols We usher in the holiday season with performances by our feeder elementary and middle schools. Our guests share the stage with our show choirs, performing a mix of songs from their competition shows and holiday tunes. There are three concerts: 10am, 1pm, and 4pm. Different feeder schools perform at each concert. This year s event will be held on Saturday, December 9 th. Dessert Concert This is our first full public performance of the show choir competition shows at Kennedy. Moonlight will also perform. Following the concert, dessert and beverages are served in the cafeteria. This year s event will be held on Thursday, January18 th. Raise The Roof! This show choir competition, hosted by Kennedy Choral League, is the biggest fundraiser of the year for our department. Show choirs from throughout the Midwest come to Kennedy to compete. Members of our show choirs host the event and will perform their shows throughout the day. Parent volunteers are needed for this event to be successful. Each show choir parent is required to work a shift and general choir parents and alumni are welcome to participate. This year s event will be held on Saturday, February 24 th.

Fab Five Concert The Fab Five Concert showcases the varsity show choirs from Kennedy, Washington, Jefferson, Linn-Mar and Prairie High Schools. Proceeds are divided among all five schools. This year s concerts will be held at the Prairie Concert Hall on January 29 th, 2018. Musical Each April, the Kennedy Music and Drama departments combine forces to put on a large scale musical. This year, the musical will be held on April 19-21, 2018. Going Out Concert This is the final show choir performance of the year. It is also an opportunity to say good-bye to the seniors. This year s event will be held on Thursday, March 8 th. KCL Spring Awards Banquet At this event we celebrate the achievements of our students with a catered banquet held in the cafeteria. The directors present awards to students and a senior video is shown in the auditorium. This year s banquet will be held on Tuesday, May 15 th, 2018. Calendar of Events Please see our calendar on our CHARMS site at: Kennedy Charms Calendar Kennedy Concert Choir Point System Students may earn two levels of awards for outstanding achievement in the Kennedy Choir program. Students earn points for the activities listed below, or lose points for the demerits listed below. In order to achieve a Level I award, students must have accumulated 400 points and be enrolled in Concert Choir. To earn a Level II award, students must have accumulated 800 points and be enrolled in Concert Choir. All points accumulate starting with the first day of enrollment in the Kennedy Vocal Music program, be that as a freshman or later.
