Analog to Digital conversion of HD video The HD-Now provides a simple method of upgrading ROVs for live HD. Keep existing infrastructure intact. Most ROVs have at least one spare fiber. Utilizing a spare presents the easiest method of getting HD video to the surface. In the cases where the ROV has HD-SDI capability, the bottle outputs HD-SDI over Coax. Built to work with the SubC 1Cam, but can also work with other analog cameras. 1. Standard Warranty SubC Control Limited herein after referred to as SCL SCL warrants that at the time of shipment all products shall be free from defects in material and workmanship and suitable for the purpose specified in the product literature. The unit/system warranty commences immediately from the date of customer acceptance and runs for a period of 365 days. Customer acceptance will always be deemed to have occurred within 72 hours of delivery. Note: Any customer acceptance testing (if applicable) must be performed at either SCL premises or at one of their approved distributors unless mutually agreed in writing prior to dispatch. Conditions: These include, but are not limited to, the following: 1. The warranty is only deemed to be valid if the equipment was sold through SCL or one of its approved distributors. 2. The equipment must have been installed and commissioned in strict accordance with approved technical standards and specifications and for the purpose that the system was designed. 3. The warranty is not transferable, except or as applies to Purchaser first then to client. 4. SCL must be notified immediately (in writing) of any suspected defect and if advised by SCL, the equipment subject to the defect shall be returned by the customer to SCL. The customer is responsible for all costs associated with shipping the unit to SCL. 5. The warranty does not apply to defects that have been caused by failure to follow the recommended installation or maintenance procedures or defects resulting from normal wear & tear, incorrect operation, fire, water ingress, lightning damage or fluctuations in vehicles supply voltages, or from any other circumstances that may arise after delivery that is out of the control of SCL. (Note: The warranty does not apply in the event where a defect has been caused by isolation incompatibilities.) 6. The warranty does not cover the transportation of personnel or equipment and per diem allowances relating to any repair or replacement. 7. The warranty does not cover any direct, indirect, punitive, special consequential damages or any damages whatsoever arising out of or connected with misuse of this product. 8. The warranty shall become invalid if the customer attempts to repair or modify the equipment without appropriate written authority being first received from SCL. 9. SCL retains the sole right to accept or reject any warranty claim. 10. Each product is carefully examined and checked before it is shipped. It should therefore be visually and operationally checked as soon as it is received. If it is damaged in anyway, a claim should be filed with the courier and SCL notified of the damage. 11. Note: SCL reserves the right to change specifications at any time without notice and without any obligation to incorporate new features in instruments previously sold. 12. Note: If the instrument is not covered by warranty, or if it is determined that the fault is caused by misuse, repair costs will be billed to the customer and an estimate of the repair costs will be submitted for customer approval before the commencement of repairs. 2. Precautions The power supply is polarized. Please ensure that the correct polarity is used before plugging into the unit. Incorrect electrical connections may damage the internal electronics. See the bulkhead pinout. The fiber optic bulkhead emits a laser signal. Be careful not to connect and disconnect cabling while the unit is powered. The fiber optics are sensitive to dirt and dust. Keep covered with proper dust caps when not in use. Before attaching the connector to the camera be certain that the pins are aligned, clean and lightly lubricated with appropriate silicon o-ring grease (Ultimate o-ring lubricant for example http://www.ablesealanddesign.com). No lube on fiber! 3. This is where the HD-now pod gets power and serial control for the camera. There is also a composite feed here on pin 5 for backup, as well as a HD-SDI signal over the coaxial connection. The 2013 connector plugs directly into the 1Cam with the supplied cable. The Fiber connector ties back into a spare gland on the ROV termination JBox. Page 5
4. Reasoning Explained There are two key advantages for using analog HD and then converting to digital closer to the ROV: Analog HD (Component) Analog component is a reliable method of sending HD video. Because it is an analog signal, the possible transmission distance is much further. Special bulkheads, connectors and cabling are not required. This keeps costs down and reliability up. The tradeoff is that an analog signal s quality decreases over long distances and is difficult to convert to fiber optics on an ROV. This is taken care of inside the bottle. Digital HD-SDI over coaxial cable Serial Digital Interface is a common method of sending digital HD video. The good thing and the problem with a digital signal is that there is no degradation of the information over distance. Unlike analog HD which will ever so slightly lose its quality with noise induction, digital HD just stops working. Therefore it is difficult to send SDI over an underwater cable unless there is extremely good shielding and the proper connectors. Digital HD-SDI over fiber optics The same benefits of digital HD over coaxial with no degradation or noise induction. Requires one dedicated single or multimode fiber line. 5. Advanced Troubleshooting Most likely any issues will be due to signal noise. Cabling should be properly shielded. Refer to section 4 for details. Below is an explanation of the dip switches located inside the housing on the Analog to SDI converter Board. By default all switches are set to the UP/OFF direction.
