Before you start For the most up-to-date installation advice, please visit: http://support.hdconnectivity.com/2014/09/hdmi-over-cat-wiring-guide/ HDMI over Cat Wiring Guidance HDanywhere single wire systems require a single network cable. Single wire systems transmit over one run of Cat5e/6/7 cable up to a distance of 50 metres. What is the best type of cable to use? Currently you can use Cat5e, Cat6, Cat6e, Cat6a, Cat7 or Cat7a with HDanywhere products. PLEASE NOTE : DO NOT USE COPPER CLAD ALUMINIUM (CCA) Cat 5/6/7 CABLE FOR HDMI over CAT PRODUCTS. The baseline cable standard for HDanywhere systems is Cat5e. Slightly greater distances can be achieved by using Cat6, or slightly better still with the Cat7, which have thicker copper cores for easier signal transfer. Whichever network cable type you choose, ensure that the main wiring architecture is solid core, not stranded patch cabling. Patch cabling can be used for the last few metres of a run (from a wallplate, for example), but should be avoided over longer runs as signal transfer over stranded cores is heavily reduced. The use of pre-made leads is not recommended unless you can be absolutely sure of their construction credentials (i.e. solid core 568B). Shielded cables Unlike other systems, shielded FTP cable is not a stipulation. If, however, you prefer to use this type of cable then please ensure that compatible shielded accessories are used. Failure to terminate cable screen at all points can induce interference, rather than eliminating it. Best Practice Best practice advice is to always use a straight piece of cable terminated directly at the transmitter and the receiver ends. HDMI over Cat with patch panels and wall plates If the patch panels are terminated correctly, there is minimal loss of distance. The use of wallplates and patch panels, however, has the potential to cause increased resistance on the cable, introducing pinch points for signal transmission, and could reduce advertised transmission lengths. TIP - instead of using RJ45 wallplates, use brush plates to maintain the neat finish.

Connection termination Terminate the cabling using RJ45 connectors to the 568B wiring standard (shown below). Please note that local building regulations may apply to the installation of cabling in properties. It is important to check building regulations to guarantee that you are in accordance with the laws of your territory.

First time setup Your HDanywhere extenders are designed so that you can set them up quickly and start using them right away. Before you connect up your system, please ensure that you complete the following: Switch off any manufacturer HDMI link, HDMI control or CEC protocol settings, such as Samsung Anynet Link, Sony Bravia Link and Panasonic Viera Link, on both the source devices and HDTVs that are to be connected to system. These protocol settings are likely to be found in the HDMI menu settings of the devices you are using. After you have changed the CEC setting, switch off all your HDMI source devices and HDTVs and unplug them from the mains. Please ensure that you only connect and disconnect HDMI cables while the transmitter and receiver is powered off. Powering on the extenders for the first time The very first power on/initialisation of the extenders is crucial to their future operation and performance**. Connect the Cat cable between the transmitter and receiver. Power the HDTV on at the mains. Bring it out of standby mode. Connect the power cable to the HDMI over Cat receiver and power it on at the mains switch. Power on the HDMI source device at the mains and bring it out of standby mode. (NB Sky+HD takes one minute or so) Connect the power cable to the HDMI over Cat transmitter and power it on at the mains switch. Select the correct HDMI channel that the HDMI over Cat Receiver is connected to Completing your set-up After completing the process above, the HDTV should be displaying the HDMI source device video and audio. Under normal operation the power and link LED s will be solid blue. Power Consumption The HDanywhere Extenders are designed to be powered on constantly, using a low power consumption. **Please note that the HDanywhere product warranty does not cover damage due to electrical disturbances. If possible, safeguard your equipment by connecting all provided power supplies to an electrical surge suppressor / line conditioner.**

IR setup In-room TV Receiver IR set-up In order to use any of your source device remotes at the TV receiver location, ensure that the IR RX cable receiver eye is connected to the 3.5mm jack port labeled RX and positioned in sight of where you would usually like to point your remote control(s). Transmitter IR cable set-up Connect the IR TX emitter cable to the 3.5mm jack port labeled TX on the transmitter unit and position the IR emitter dongle on the shelf in front of the source.

Addition Setup Options Coaxial Audio Connection The EX50 receivers come with a built-in coaxial audio output. This allows them to feed audio directly into an amplifier. To use this function, connect the coaxial output on the receiver to your AV Receiver. When ARC is selected via the receiver, audio from the attached display will be output via the coaxial connection. Please note - The audio output type will be directly related to the audio capabilities of the connected display. i.e. If your display can only decode stereo audio, only stereo audio will be passed from the coaxial output. Short Run Adjustment The EX50 receiver also comes equipped with controls for allowing HDMI over Cat pass-through over shorter lengths of cable. Located on the side of the receiver is a bank of two dip switches. Please see the table below for recommended settings when shorter cable runs are installed. Dip Switch Position Cable Length Cables lengths from 1m to 20m Cable Lengths from 21m to 29m Cable lengths 30m or above ARC (Audio Return Channel) The Audio Return Channel (ARC) enables a display to send an audio signal from the built in freeview/smart functions upstream via a connected HDMI cable to an AV receiver or audio controller, eliminating the need for a separate audio cable. For this function to be available both the display and AV Receiver (AVR) must support ARC and specific HDMI ports may be required. The ARC switch changes where the audio from the display is being sent. ARC OFF - Display audio will come from the display s internal speakers. ARC ON - Display audio signal is sent downstream via the attached HDMI cable to the AV receiver, or via the coaxial output on the display receiver.

SimplEDID What is EDID EDID (Extended Display Identification Data) is data provided by a HDTV to describe its capabilities to a connected source, and it presents such information as screen resolution, refresh rates and audio capabilities. SimplEDID allows you to fix a specific EDID profile internally to assist with the connection between the display and source. By fixing the EDID you can specify the maximum resolution, 3D functionality and audio output type from the transmitter, instead of the HDTV dictating what the source should output. You have the option, through the SimplEDID dial, to choose how the extenders will manage the EDID profiles from the display and source. The extenders have multiple EDID management modes that can control how the EDID profiles from the individual displays and devices are combined. To use the SimplEDID system, select the required EDID profile using the table on the next page. Then, using a small screwdriver, turn the dial located on the transmitter to select the required EDID profile. Once this has been set, power down and then power on the extenders to start using the selected profile. Please see the table on the next page (page 16) for a list of pre-stored EDID profiles.

Troubleshooting Should you encounter a problem when using your extenders a power cycle of the transmitter should resolve most issues. To power cycle the extenders, simply unplug the transmitter and receiver. Leave unplugged for 20-30 seconds then reconnect the power. If the power cycle has not resolved your issue, please see below for more specific fault finding ISSUE: No/intermittent picture on HDTV, blocky images or sparkles Fault finding Drop the output resolution of the source device down to 1080i or 720p. If the picture appears correctly on the HDTV this indicates a bandwidth issue with the Cat cable run. The available bandwidth is too low for 1080p transmission. Check that the Cat cable is not bent, knotted, kinked or distorted in any way that would prevent these high frequency signals from traveling throughout the intended length. Ensure that the RJ45 connectors are fully inserted and securely click-locked into place to ensure perfect connection. No/intermittent picture, blocky images or sparkles can be caused by: Electromagnetic interference affecting the Cat cable due to proximity to power lines. Imperfect RJ45 connector termination. Use of wallplates or patch panels that cause too much bandwidth drop. Low-quality Cat cabling or internal cable strand breakages caused by poor production. Installation bending/strain/damage. Possible fixes: Relocate cable run away from possible interference from power line (minimum 60cm). Re-terminate RJ45 connectors, or replace with better quality connectors. Remove wallplates and patch panels. Replace them with direct cable runs and brush plates. Upgrade to better quality Cat5e/6/7 cable. ISSUE: IR control not working, or only working intermittently Fault finding Check the batteries in your remote control. Check that only IR RX cable is connected to the TV receiver, and IR TX to the transmitter. Double-check and reposition the IR TX emitter so that it is directly in front of, and approx 2-3cm from, the IR receiving windows on the source device. If you do not resolve your issue after reading this, please email support@hdconnectivity.com with as much information about your set-up and the symptoms as possible.
