This is a child directed activity. The Lion Sleeps Tonight: Talk about the three sections in the song. Sing the A section and ask the children how we should play the drum for the A section. Find a different way to play on the B section. Play another way for the C section. You can also suggest movement for this section. Use the recording to play the 3 sections. Silly Sam: Review the word fermata. Explain that Silly Sam will decide how long we will hold the fermata by hiding behind the rock. Practice singing and moving high and low. Practice a wigglin and a grinnin. Sing the song with one of the children hiding the snake puppet behind their back to indicate how long to hold the fermata. Tideo: Remove the F and B from the glockenspiels. Sing the Tideo verse Time for music while playing the beat on the two blue bars, the Cs. Sing the verse Time for metals and play only the glockenspiel on the rhythm for tideo. After the verse, make up a song on the glockenspiel while the sopranino plays. This is a child directed activity. Hunt the Cows: Explain that this song will have a section that is allegro and another section that is adagio. Ask if anyone remembers what those words mean. You might need to remind them of the cat and mouse. Sing the A section. Explain the song is about a farmer who notices all his cows are missing, and when he looks for all the workers, he finds them asleep. He wakes them up: sing the A section. Explain what the workers say: sing the B section. Discuss the dynamics: the A section is forte or loud. The B section is piano or soft. Using the recording, play the beat on the drum for the A section. Make quiet swishing sounds on the drum while singing the B section. End by pretending to be asleep on the drum. Wake up when the triangle rings. The Chimes of Dunkirk: Hit the drum 4 times, clap 4 times, find your own way to play for 8 beats. Ask the children what animal will be moving around the jungle. Stand up and move around the drum like the animals the children suggest. Adults can remain seated during the movement. Act very surprised when the music starts up again after the fake endings! Tideo: Ask if the children remember what bars to remove from the glockenspiel for Tideo. Remove the F and B. Sing the Time for Music verse while playing the rhythm of tideo on any bars. Show the children which bars sound like our singing for the tideos. Explain that they can play those bars or play their own way. Sing the verse Time for metals and play only the glockenspiel on the rhythm for tideo. After the verse, make up a song on the glockenspiel while the sopranino plays. Sing Time for skins and use the blue mallets to play the tideo rhythm on the ocean drum. Then improvise on the ocean drum while the sopranino plays. Remind the children to sing and play each verse. 34 Lesson Plan 34 Activity Title Comments Instrument Making Concert Run Through Instruments Movement Solo Singing Decorated Shoe Boxes and Jungle Item Homemade Shaker Eggs for Concert Concert Run Through Tideo Jungle Beat Chant Explain that for the concert the children will need a green decorated shoe box. We will put their instruments and their jungle item in this box. Make sure the boxes have a top that can be removed. They can bring anything they like as their item to bring to the jungle for Going to the jungle, sing what we should bring, as long as it fits in the box. Begin class by having everyone make their own shaker egg for the concert. Place an old tablecloth on the floor with baskets of supplies in the center. Play the jungle songs recordings while they make their shakers. Give the following directions: Chose a plastic colored egg. Put rice and/or beans inside. Try the shaker before taping it shut, to be sure you have created the sound you want. Put colored tape around the egg to keep it securely shut. Add stickers for decoration. Shake! See Singing for the Concert for ideas to make the needed repetition fun as you improve. If you have more than one class, assign each class a color. Remind them of their color several times during the classes prior to the rehearsals. Explain that they will look for their color line on the floor at the rehearsal and concert. Note: The lines of colored tape will group the children by class, so they can sit with their friends at the rehearsal and concert. Remove the glockenspiel and ocean drum from the kit. Place the instruments in the decorated green box. Be sure child has an item for the Going to the Jungle song. Tideo: Children are seated with glockenspiels on their lap. Play on tideo when singing the Time for music verse. Play on tideo when singing the Time for metals verse and then improvise while the sopranino plays. Put down glocks and pick up ocean drums. Play on tideo when singing Time for skins now and then improvise while the sopranino plays. Pick up sticks to tap on tideo when singing the verse Time for woods now and then improvise while the sopranino plays. Jungle Beat Chant: Stand up and play the sticks for the jungle beat chant. Once they have the feathers, start by singing your color first to show them how to sing and put the feather on the turkey. Several children sing their color before going back to the song. This is a fun minor song that is easy to accompany on the guitar. Turkey Felts Felt Board Guitar Favorite Movement/ Dance Cocoa Songs: Five Little Jingle Bells Show the horse and sleigh picture, pointing out the bells. Sing the song, stopping before the last note of each phrase for the children to sing. Bring attention to the correct pitch. Give everyone jingle bells. Bring out the puppet and say, We are going on a sleigh ride with Cocoa. Hold a rhythm stick horizontally, with 5 bells hanging from it. Cocoa holds one end of the stick. Sing One little jingle bell fell in the snow and drop one of the bells after the word snow. Have the kids practice dropping their own bells and picking them back up. During the chorus everyone follows Cocoa, galloping in a circle. Perform with the recording. On the last verse, the children return their bells to Cocoa s stick. Explain that one hoop will have a metal bar inside and one hoop will have a wooden bar. When the conductor jumps into both hula hoops, everyone plays, and when he jumps out, everyone stops. If the conductor jumps only in the hoop with the wooden bars, only xylophones play. For the hoop with metal bars, only metallophones and glockenspiels play.
