KULM Sma Town with a Big Heart Kum, North Dakota is a town that proves when area residents take a proactive approach, they can hep their sma town not ony survive, but thrive. From the newy buit high schoo to the argest wind farm in North Dakota just a few mies outside of town, Kum ives up to its nickname, Sma Town with a Big Heart. Located in LaMoure County, Kum was founded in 1892. It was estabished as the western edge of the Soo Line Rairoad, and was named in honor of the German city, Kum, by a German from Russia immigrant. The new town offered an idea ocation for the rairoad, as it cosey borders Dickey, McIntosh and Logan counties. The town grew steadiy and farmers from a four counties brought their grain to Kum to head east on the rai cars. The rairoad expanded westward in 1898, however the town continued to boom. Kum s popuation reached its highest point of neary 750 in the 1930 s. seek new and innovative ways to improve the quaity of ife for its residents. In 2003, 41 wind turbines were constructed between Edgeey and Kum making a positive impact on both communities. Chicago is nationay recognized as the Windy City, but ocas know the Kum area is one of the windiest in North Dakota. Embracing the changes to the area, Kum now hods Windfest Days the third weekend in August each year. WindFest offers fun for a ages with awn mower races, a parade, craft fair, ive music and kids activities. Many changes have occurred since the town began 125 years ago. However, the hospitaity of the peope from Kum has remained the same. ReadiTECH Gof Tournament set for Juy 8 & 9 DRN s ReadiTech crew has teamed up with area gof courses to once again offer the Annua G.O.L.F. Cassic. This year s tournament is being hed on Juy 8 and 9 at four area courses: the Grand Rapids Memoria Park Country Cub, the Oakes Gof Cub, the Lisbon Bisse Gof Course, and the Forman Gof Course. G.O.L.F. is open to a gofers 16 years of age or oder. Gofers are encouraged to put together teams of four, but teams of two and three wi aso be accepted.
