Jerod Impichchaachaaha Tate Music Alive Composer-in-Residence The residency of Jerod Impichchaachaaha Tate is made possible through Music Alive, a residency program of the League of American Orchestras and New Music USA. This national program is designed to provide orchestras with resources and tools to support their work with composers and new music, capitalizing on the power of composers and their creativity to build new paths for orchestras to heighten their relevancy and deepen their relationships with their communities. The SDSO s work with Jerod began in 2009 with the commission of Waktégli Olówaŋ (Victory Songs), sung in Lakota, based on five Sioux Warriors. The SDSO chose Jerod as its composer because of our long history of impactful work together, Jerod s passion for and success in mentoring young composers, and the partnership s ability to assist the SDSO in addressing the state-wide issue of race relations through the Lakota Music Project. Jerod s residency will focus in part on realizing the SDSO s vision for Phase III of the Lakota Music Project. Major funding for Music Alive comes from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, with additional support from The Aaron Copland Fund for Music, The Amphion Foundation, The ASCAP Foundation Bart Howard Fund, the Francis Goelet Charitable Lead Trusts, and the National Endowment for the Arts. 1

Maestro Delta David Gier Dear Friends, As Music Director of your orchestra my goal is not unlike that of a curator of a great museum, who pulls together and presents as much art as possible within a finite space and length of time. Both broad and deep, the 2017-18 SDSO season is assembled of works representative of diverse time periods and cultures: compositions from hundreds of years ago to those created yesterday, reflecting a range of styles and influences which is ever-widening as classical music becomes a more universal language; in short, music that engages composers, performers, and audiences from all over the world. We begin, of course, with those expressions considered to be masterworks plenty of Beethoven, Brahms, Tchaikovsky. Pieces which we love to play and you love to hear. Then we add important and timely works, such as Bernstein s Candide on the occasion of his centennial. We introduce new voices like American Indian composer Jerod Impichchaachaaha Tate, with whom we proudly partner for New Music USA s Music Alive residency. This partnership will span the next two seasons and profoundly impact our Lakota Music Project. Pianist Emanuele Arciuli was awarded Italy s Abbiati Prize during the time he has been associated with us. He is considered to be an international expert on American piano music and comes to us with two important new American expressions on October 7. Chinese violinist Dan Zhu is enjoying a meteoric rise, including a Tanglewood debut featuring the Bernstein Serenade he will play with us. Bassoonist Martin Kuuskmann plays regularly with the Berlin Philharmonic and is a featured soloist around the world. Our Pops series offers experiences you won t find anywhere else. Wicked Divas storms in this October with music from the Broadway-hit Wicked and features two soloists who performed as Elphaba and Glinda on Broadway. We are bringing a new Christmas show to the SDSO stage. 'Tis the Season! will feature stunning vocalists, bright lights, dancers, and the holiday hits we all know and love. To round out our series, the SDSO brings Video Games Live! to South Dakota. Largely popular worldwide, The New York Times calls Video Games Live Captivating! and Bombastic! We invite you, whether you have been with us for many years or are just looking to give us a try, to be a part of our SDSO family this season. See you soon! delta david gier Music Director 2

SDSO 2017-18 SEASON CLASSICAL SERIES Dan Zhu Mahler & Bartók FEBRUARY 3 The South Dakota Symphony Youth Orchesta joins the SDSO for Lowak Shoppala by Composer-in-Residence Jerod Tate. Mahler s unfinished Symphony No. 10 was a beacon, and a bridge, toward the 20th century. The Adagio is the only completed movement from Mahler s final work which the SDSO performs as the next installment in its Mahler cycle. Bartók s was the first concerto for orchestra, a work that features the entire orchestra and its individual members as soloists. This unparalleled work of virtuosity allows your SDSO to shine as the truly remarkable ensemble it is! Tate Mahler Bartók Lowak Shoppala (Fire and Light) with the SDSYO Adagio from Symphony No. 10 Concerto for Orchestra Bernstein & Beethoven march 3 march 4 2:30 PM Music written by representatives of the culture out of which it grew. Beethoven certainly fits the description of the quintessential German composer of his era. Leonard Bernstein is arguably the most important figure in American music during the second half of the last century. Ye Xiaogang interprets his Chinese culture through the medium of the symphony orchestra. Chinese-American violinist Dan Zhu is one of the most celebrated of his generation, representing both sides of his heritage in this program. Bernstein Ye Xiaogang Beethoven Serenade, after Plato s Symposium Lamura Cuo Dan Zhu, violin Symphony No. 2 in D major, Op.36 MATINEE SERIES SPECIAL PERFORMANCE PREMIUM CONCERT 5
