MODEL DA10 The LavryBlack DA10 features: - Ultra low jitter modes. - Included sample rate conversion for non standard rates. - Potentiometer-free digitally controlled analog volume circuitry. - High power discrete headphone output. - XLR, Coaxial (RCA) and Optical (Toslink) digital inputs. - Stereo/Mono switch (for monitoring of stereo sound field). - Polarity Inversion. - Optional side-by-side 19 inch rack mount kit for two LavryBlack units. CONNECTIONS: CAUTION: Please switch OFF or disconnect power to all devices in your system before making input and output connections to the DA 10. Connect a Digital INPUT from your source using any or all of the following: - XLR cable to the AES connector. - Toslink fiber to OPTICAL (after removing the Optical dust cover). - Coaxial RCA cable to the SPDIF connector. Note: All the connectors can receive either AES/EBU (professional format) or SPDIF (consumer format). For example, an XLR to RCA adapter can be used to feed a coaxial SPDIF signal to the XLR input. Connect the XLR OUTPUTS to your destination device (receiver, power amplifier or powered speaker). - THE XLR marked RIGHT to the RIGHT Channel of the destination. - THE XLR marked LEFT to the LEFT Channel of the destination. - Connect headphones to the HEADPHONE jack. - Connect the AC power cord to the rear power entry receptacle. - Connect the DA10 and other devices to an AC power source. 1

CONFIGURING THE XLR OUTPUTS: The unit is factory configured to operate in Balanced output mode. The balanced signal comes out PIN 2 and PIN 3 of the XLR outputs. PIN 1 is a ground connection for the cable shield. The unit may be configured (via internal jumpers) to drive Unbalanced signals. Most XLR to RCA adaptors or adapter cables (such as a cable with XLR Female on one end and an RCA plug or ¼ inch MONO plug on the other) work correctly as Balanced to Unbalanced converters. However, you MUST set the internal jumpers for the proper unbalanced configuration when using adapters. The XLR pin of the adapter that connects to the center pin of the RCA plug is the HOT pin for unbalanced operation. Please review the drawing RECONFIGURING DA10 OUTPUT for additional information. Note: The Balanced configuration can be made to drive an Unbalanced load when using the properly wired interconnecting cables as follows: Alternative 1: Use PIN 3 for the signal and leave PIN 2 unconnected. Alternative 2: Use PIN 2 for the signal and leave PIN 3 unconnected. In both cases, PIN 1 is used for signal ground return. You may also tie a shield to PIN 1. OPERATION: A. PLL SETTINGS: Rear Panel Use Crystal or Narrow settings for 44.1, 48, 88.2 and 96KHz rates. When a unit is locked to an input (LOCK lamp is ON), the received rate is indicated by a lamp. Use WIDE for non-standard frequencies between 30KHz and 200KHz. When set to WIDE, all 4 lamps (44.1, 48, 88.2 and 96KHz) are ON. Before turning the DA10 ON, select the PLL mode (Crystal, Narrow, or Wide). Changing between Crystal, Narrow and Wide while the power is ON may take up to 50 seconds to take full effect. Although audio is being reproduced, the quality of the audio may improve over this period. 2

B. AVOIDING CLICKS: The DA10 provides protection against its own power ON clicks. The DA 10 CANNOT protect against power ON clicks or pops from digital sources feeding the DA 10. ALWAYS apply power to digital sources connected to the DA 10 before powering the DA 10, or reduce the volume to 00 before applying power to, or changing operating modes of digital source. The volume setting is non-volatile and is stored when you turn the power OFF. For this reason, it is advisable to reduce the volume to a low setting or mute (00) before turning the power OFF in systems where the DA 10 is connected directly to power amps or powered speakers. Switching between input sources (XLR, RCA or OPTICAL) and PLL modes (WIDE, NARROW or CRYSTAL) during operation may cause unwanted clicks, especially when the signal is loud. To avoid unwanted clicks when the unit is powered ON, it is advisable to reduce the volume to a low level when operating the INPUT switch, (XLR, RCA or OPTICAL) or the PLL switch (WIDE, NARROW or CRYSTAL). C. VOLUME CONTROL: Note: the unit is shipped in BALANCED configuration. Internal jumpers enable Unbalanced operation with PIN 2 or PIN 3 HOT. See Configuring the XLR Outputs Volume Balanced Unbalanced Headphone Setting Configuration Configuration Level ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 56 24dBu 18dBu 18dBu 55 23dBu 17dBu 17dBu 54 22dBu 16dBu 16dBu --- --------- --------- --------- --- --------- --------- --------- 01-31dBu -37dBu -37dBu 00 OFF OFF OFF The volume setting is non volatile the unit recalls the last setting when powered ON. When driving an external Amplifier or Preamp care must be taken to not over drive the amp and cause distortion. It is recommended to consult the amplifier s manual or manufacturer to determine its input specification. Please review the following plot to determine a DA10 volume setting that will not overdrive the amp. For example: AES/EBU professional line levels: Set to 56 for 24dBu balanced = 34.72V peak to peak = 12.28V rms Set to 56 for 18dBu un-balanced = 17.36V peak to peak = 6.14V rms A typical home power amp or powered speaker: Set to 40 for 8dBu balanced = 5.6V peak to peak = 2V rms Set to 46 for 8dBu unbalanced = 5.6V peak to peak = 2V rms 3

D. MONO and POLARITY: Typically these switches are set to STEREO and NORMAL positions. Both MONO and INVERT can be selected during operation. -MONO mode is provided for monitoring the impact of the stereo sound field. The MONO signal is the AVERAGE (sum divided by 2) of the L and R signals. This approach helps to preserve the perceived volume level when switching between STEREO and MONO while listening to typical stereo music program. -The POLARITY switch affects the polarity of the reproduced audio waveform (which is sometimes referred to as absolute phase ). This means that when in a system without any polarity inversions, a recorded sound such as a drum beat is reproduced, the speaker will move towards the listener momentarily raising the pressure in the room, similar to the motion of the drum head. The perceived effect of incorrect Polarity can vary widely depending on the content of the music program. -NORMAL position causes the XLR outputs pin 3 to be non-inverting (+) and XLR outputs pin 2 to be inverting (-). -INVERT position results in XLR outputs pin 2 to be non-inverting (+) and the XLR outputs pin 3 to be inverting (-). -The POLARITY switch functions in both balanced and unbalanced output operation, and is not related to the jumper settings. In the case of unbalanced operation, the XLR output pin opposite the HOT pin is GROUND, but the polarity of the HOT pin still follows the operation of the POLARITY switch. 4
