Mck Caldectt/1 Hlding a Schl-wide Mck Caldectt It is a well-knwn, r pssibly a little-knwn, truth that if yu want students t care passinately abut a subject simply intrduce a splash f cmpetitin. Hlding a Mck Caldectt with yur students helps define the rle f the illustratr. It can als pen up instructin n hw illustratin supprts text, discussins n narratin, and cmparing and cntrasting picture bks against the Caldectt Award criteria. See Cmmn Cre Reading Standards 6, 7, and 9. T begin chse a week smetime befre the actual award is given. I usually d mine ne f the first weeks in January r in December befre the break. The award is always annunced n a Mnday in January, fr 2014 it will be January 27. Blck ff the entire week if yu wish t d it with all yur classes. Decide which classes yu want t d this with. I d it with first thru sixth grade. I leave ut Kindergarteners because I d nt have them fr a lng enugh time span. In the weeks leading up t the vte I plan a few lessn plans n illustratin. I use the bks we will be vting n t teach cncepts abut illustratin r even tackle ther elements f the cre. I ve had success lking n-line fr prcess infrmatin right n sme f the illustratr s websites. A few f them have had shrt vides f their prcess. On chsing the bks: I chse ten eligible bks. T be eligible a bk needs t have been published in the United States within the calendar year preceding the award. The illustratr needs t be frm the US, either a citizen r resident. It needs t be a picture bk, nt an illustrated bk. The difference is that in a picture bk the illustratins wrk with the text t tell the stry. Neither can stand alne. An illustrated bk is ne where pictures are added but nt needed fr the infrmatin t be understd, i.g. mst nn-fictin bks, nvels with illustratins. T find bks pay attentin t what is getting gd reviews. GdReads usually has a list ging. Hrn Bk has a terrific blg Calling Caldectt. I will be happy t share my list with yu if yu e-mail me: dleu@dsdmail.net It s less imprtant t predict which bks will end up with actual award and hnrs, but t chse quality bks which can create slid discussins n illustratin. Fr the week f: Print ff ballts listing all the bks. I fund it is nt a gd idea t number the list as the smaller students get cnfused when asked t use numbers t rank their tp three. Use bullets r letters. See Attachment Make a sign with the title f each bk preceded by a sequential number frm ne t ten. See attachment. Put the signs and the bks at different tables r statins thrughut yur library. Make sure the numbers flw in a sequential rder s the students can mve easily frm number t number. I als put a stack f ballts and pencils at each spt. Prcedure fr a class perid. I have my students fr a half hur a week. The fllwing steps take arund twenty minutes t execute, leaving time fr checking bks in and ut.
Mck Caldectt/2 Once the students are gathered I give a brief explanatin f the prcedure, making sure they knw where each statin is and t mve frm statin t statin in numerical rder (I be sure and ask where they shuld g after statin 10 statin 1) I remind them that they are nt chsing the bk they like the best r the ne with the prettiest pictures but the ne that uses illustratins t tell the stry in the best way. I als give a shrt lecture n bk care. Only ne persn in the grup shuld turn the pages fr each bk, n need t rush, and turn the page at the crner. (I had a lt f ripped pages the first year. This seems t help.) I tell them nt t use the ballts r pencils until they are at the last statin. I quickly put the class int small grups f tw r three and assign them a number t start n and then send them ff t their statin. I use a timer. Fr me it wrks t set it fr ne minute, twenty secnds. They are t use the time t lk thrugh and evaluate the bk. When the timer dings they mve t the next statin. When they reach the final statin I ask them t stay at the table and fill ut their ballt. I have them put a 1 in frnt f the bk they think is the mst distinguished, a 2 in frnt f the next mst, and then a 3 in frnt f the next, and then stp. I ask them t take a mment t set up the table fr the next class and then bring me their ballts. They are then excused t search fr their bks. It s a tight squeeze but we manage t fit the time alltment fairly well. Tallying the results. I have my sixth grade assistants help with the accunting. Using a tally sheet (see attached) I get results fr each class. The vtes are weighted by number. First place vtes get 3 pints Secnd place vtes get 2 pints Third place vtes get 1 pint. Once all the classes are cunted I ttal them all tgether and make an annuncement t the entire schl during ur weekly annuncement. I m always sure t tell them when the legitimate results are in. I usually hang a pster in the library with ur medalist and hnrs as well.
