PRODUCTION DETAILS The Jungle Book Audition Dates: September 20 th to 24 th 2016 Performance Dates: December 1 st to 3 rd 2016 6 Performances Directed by Sarah Dyson Produced by Keon Lee Performed at the HK Jockey Club Amphitheatre, Hong Kong Academy for the Performing Arts 1 Gloucester Road, Wan Chai ABOUT THE PLAY The young human child Mowgli yearns to find his place within the longstanding community of jungle animals. In this fast paced rhythmic adaptation of the timeless classic The Jungle Book, Mowgli learns to abide by the ways of jungle law with guidance from his friends Baloo and Bagheera and stand up to the fierce Shere Khan. Faust International Youth Theatre welcomes you to join us on this wild theatrical adventure about friendship and bravery. AUDITION INFORMATION When are the auditions? Auditions take place on the dates below at 5 th and 6 th Floor, Nan Dao Commercial Building, 359 361 Queen s Road Central, Sheung Wan. If needed, recalls will be held on Sunday September 25 th. Tuesday September 20 th : 6.00pm to 8.00pm Wednesday September 21 st : 6:00pm to 8:00pm Saturday September 24 th : 10.00am to 5.00pm Sunday September 25 th : morning (recalls if needed) Who can audition? You are welcome to audition as long as you are: A Faust International Youth Theatre member Aged between 8 and 18 at the time of your audition Registered for Term 1 in Season 18 Both boys and girls will be considered for all roles Full of energy and excited to perform!
How do I book an audition? To book an audition, complete the audition request form and return it to us on or before Monday September 19 th by email to Auditions@FaustWorld.com. Once we receive your audition form, a specific audition time will be sent to you by email. Audition times will be allocated on a first come, first served basis and will run between 45-60 minutes. Do I need to prepare anything? Bring yourself and your fantastic energy! Each audition will last between 45-60 minutes and will take place in a group of 10-15 young people. Most of the audition will be workshop style to see how we all work together. Please be familiar with the audition scenes (included in this audition notice) in preparation. Please note that you may be asked to read for another character during the audition. Remember we re looking for people full of energy with loud and clear voice and who have really thought about the text. You could think about the characters, their feelings and thoughts in the scene. What happens next? Parents will be contacted by email by Monday September 26 th with details of whether you have been cast to take part in the production. Please note that it is not possible for everyone who auditions to be offered a part. Cast members will be chosen based on suitability for these particular roles. It s important to know that if you don t get a part this time, you can always audition for a future production. PRODUCTION COMMITMENT Once you become a part of The Jungle Book cast, the hard work doesn t stop there. It will be very important that you stay committed to the production throughout the rehearsal and performance period. Below are details about the production commitment: When is the first rehearsal? We will hold a cast read through on Tuesday September 27 th. The evening will be structured as follows: 6:00pm 7:30pm: The whole cast comes together for a read through of the script. A rehearsal schedule will then be sent to parents every week by email detailing who will need to attend each rehearsal. When will I be rehearsing? This depends upon the rehearsal schedule sent every two weeks and which group you are in. You should be prepared to rehearse on two or more of the days below. It is not common for every child to attend all rehearsals in the same week but you should prepare to come along to each one and be able to work with the schedule. Rehearsals will take place at the Faust Studio in Sheung Wan or at other Central venues. The exact venue will be specified on your rehearsal schedule. Small group rehearsals (as called): Tuesday 6:00pm 8:00pm Thursday 5.30pm 7:30pm Weekly full cast rehearsals: Saturday 2.00pm 6.00pm Friday 5.30pm 7:30pm
Do I need to attend every rehearsal that I m called for? Yes! Every cast member is vital to the success of the show and all actors must attend every rehearsal as called. What happens during production week? During production week, the week of the performances in December, you will be called to rehearsals and performances at the HK Jockey Club Amphitheatre at the Hong Kong Academy for the Performing Arts. All cast members must be able to attend all rehearsals and performances during production week and permission will be sought from schools for you to attend. You will be at the theatre for: Technical & Dress Rehearsals: Tuesday November 29 th & Wednesday November 30 th Performances (with a call time two hours before): Thursday December 1 st (10.00am and 7:30pm) Friday December 2 nd (10.00am and 7.30pm) Saturday December 3 rd (2:30pm and 7.30pm) What should I think about before I commit? You should check your availability for the above dates before auditioning. It s so important that everyone, no matter what their part is, attends all the rehearsals they are called for. Before you come along to the audition, check that you can fully commit yourself so that this is the main activity you ll be focusing on through to December. If the show isn t right for you this time, there will be other opportunities in the future. We want cast members to attend all rehearsals with energy, enthusiasm, patience and a huge smile. Scene 1 Ages 12-18 Characters: Rama, Raksha and Shere Khan Rama and Raksha are the parental wolves of the pack, they have just come across a young abandoned man cub, he is frightened and lost. They have slowly approached him and their parental instinct has kicked in, this is when Shere Khan has entered, wounded from the traps of the humans. He wants revenge, he wants the man cub. Shere Khan. SHERE KHAN Give him to me! We don't take orders SHERE KHAN He s mine! (suspiciously) His parents have Run off You're in our part of the jungle now, and by our laws, you will not kill him. SHERE KHAN His parents tried to kill me! So the child should be punished?! SHERE KHAN (holds out wounded paw) Their traps. I ll be lame because of them! Then go, lame one! The cub is mine! SHERE KHAN Grrrrrrr!!! Hunter of cubs. Frog-eater. Fish-Killer! Beware. One day this cub will hunt you! Shere Khan! You know it s dangerous to come between a mother and her cub. SHERE KHAN I swear, one day to my teeth he ll come! Go! (SHERE KHAN limps out) Shere Khan will not forgive this, Mother. We ll keep him safe. He s alone now. We must ask the pack, he s not one of us. They have to let us keep him. He needs us. [To ] Shhhh. Be still, little frog. Shhhhh I know nothing of humans, Raksha. We ll need help. Bagheera. He once lived among men, he knows their ways, he ll make a great protector. Then let s ask Bagheera to watch over him until he s strong enough to take care of himself. And Baloo. He can teach him like he teaches the wolf cubs. O Mowgli, Mowgli the Frog, I ll call you. Don t be afraid of Shere Khan, one day you will hunt him, just as he s hunted you.
Scene 2 Ages 10-16 Characters: Bagheera, Baloo and Kaa Mowgli has left his two friends Baloo and Bagheera to adventure with the monkeys. Baloo and Bagheera have now gone in search of Kaa, a snake. The monkeys are terrified of Kaa and the friends believe this is the only way they can get him back, however they must not fall under Kaa s spell themselves if they plan to rescue Mowgli. BAGHEERA Careful, Baloo! She s always very hungry after she s changed her skin. And her eyes BALOO Buh, I know, I know. Don't look her in the eye. BAGHEERA She can charm an animal and leave them helpless BALOO Don t I know it. BAGHEERA Be careful! BALOO Good hunting, Kaa. KAA (waking up) Good hunting. Baloo. Bagheera. Sssso-Psshaw! (KAA falls, the branch breaking.) The branches are not what they used to be. Nothing but rotten twigs. BALOO Maybe your weight has something to do with it KAA What are you sss-saying?? BALOO Buh... BAGHEERA It s the twigs I m sure, Kaa KAA Ssshmm I fell on my last hunt The noise woke the monkeys. They called me evil names BALOO (under his breath) Footless.. BAGHEERA Evil eye BALOO Yellow earth-worm BAGHEERA Speckled frog KAA Ssssss! Have they called me that? BAGHEERA They ll say anything, they re shameless. KAA Earlier today I heard them dancing on the tree tops BAGHEERA We need your help, Kaa! We re looking for the monkeys. KAA Ssss, it can be no sssmall thing that takes two such hunters on the trail of monkeys. BALOO Those nut-stealers have stolen out man-cub KAA I heard a man-cub was living with the wolf pack, but I didn't believe it. BALOO He s the best and smartest and boldest of man-cubs and I we love him, Kaa. KAA Ts! Ts! I ve also known what love is. (Kaa tries to hypnotize Bagheera and Baloo with her words.) There are tales I could te-e-ell, I could te-e-ll BAGHEERA & BALOO KAA! BAGHEERA Perhaps another night, Kaa. We must move fast. Will you help us? They fear you most of all. KAA They have good reason. Aaa-ssp! (Licks her chops) Now, which way did they go? BALOO Buhh KAA You don't know? BALOO Buhhh
Scene 3 Ages 8-11 Characters: King Louie, Mowgli, Monkey 1 and 2 Mowgli s first introduction to the monkey king, King Louie. Mowgli has left his friends, Baloo and Bagheera, who have warned him about the monkeys and their crazy ways, but Mowgli thinks he knows better. The monkeys see Mowgli as a leader as he too walks on two legs, however he does not see himself in them as he recognizes as a man cub. Mowgli soon sees the grass isn t greener on the other side. MONKEY 1 MONKEY 2 MONKEY 1 excellent humans. MONKEY 2 MONKEY 1 (to ) Welcome to our kingdom, our brother. Thank you (pointing out his crown) Majesty. Majesty? That s right! Majesty! I m the Majesty. He s the Majesty. The Majesty. Majesty. I like Majesty. Now, as our new brother, you ll teach us everything we need to know to be more Oh yes, most excellent! Most excellent humans!!! Humans, Majesty? You are human, aren't you? I m a wolf (The MONKEYS laugh at who is obviously not a wolf.) A wolf?! A wolf has four legs, fur, pointy teeth, ears. No, no, I m most positive you re a human. Only on the outside, Majesty. I m more wolf than human. More wolf than human? Ha! (to the MONKEYS) That s funny. MONKEY 2 Funny, funny, very funny. MONKEY 1 Wolf-human! He s a wolf-human! Wolf-human or not, you're still human and you will teach us to be human too. MONKEY 2 And tell all in the jungle how excellent we really are. MONKEY 1 Everyone in the jungle, all about our most excellent selves. MONKEY 2 Our excellent selves! Our excellent selves! I ll tell them, but I don't think anyone s going to believe me Believe you?! But you're human, you're most excellent MONKEY 2 You are most excellent. Why?? Why! Why would they not believe you? Uhm, well, Baloo says you re all crazy. MONKEY 1 Who Baloo? Baloo who? MONKEY 2 Who Baloo? Baloo who? We re not crazy! We re excellent!! We re excellent! Why crazy? Why crazy? You have no laws. No hunting call, nothing but silly words Words, laws, my brother! My brother, you are going to make our laws. I have to go home. Home? Brother, this is your home! MONKEY 1 You re home, Brother! You re home!
