A B O U T S I M O N E W E I L, F R O M R O L A N D A U Z E T I have no authority to speak about Simone Weil, no title to defend other than the overwhelming experience I had when reading her thoughts and of her very being. There is something paradoxical in wanting to represent someone who is an observer for the most part, and to build a thought process from their world vision. Simone Weil took the idea of the human condition to such heights that she seems, at times, to escape it. She is one of the exceptional beings that bears witness to their species without fully belong to it Simone Weil is a liberator, always running ahead. Regardless of the subject, her work always tells us : Do not be afraid of your thoughts. Do not be afraid of yourself, and that is what booms like a clap of thunder, could it be the last warning for our era, an era that is searching for a madness that threatens to engulf us? Simone Weil has the bravery of the impossible, the rapture of reason, the experience of a life of work and thought, through a philosophy of the absolute, a violent wisdom and grace. Her work rallies, creating a meeting point on an imaginary map, like the image of a society that is undergoing a fundamental transformation, linked to the collapse of the old order, the explosion of sectarianism that has notably lead to a debate about Europe, an example of today s state of mind. Initials SW is a theatrical and musical expedition to the source of her conscience and her identity. The idea of the show is not to produce a portrait but to describe a world through which we will examine our era as if through the eyes of Simone Weil, like a precise and critical needle, sparkling with humour. We will approach Weil s radicalism immerged in a non-linear timeframe in the theatre, the ideal place, shot through with musical, social and spiritual energies. Some say that our humanity is suffering from fatigue. Simone Weil proposes a broader, radically new, suprahuman version, and from the depths of a fertile despair she calls on us to overcome. The writings, letters, ideas, beliefs, temperaments, moods will extend an invisible yet unbreakable thread: the freedom to think. We will work with this thread and through a dramaturgy of jumps, we will develop a theatrical and musical narrative that depicts the examination of this freedom. R O L A N D A U Z E T Page 1

T H E P R O J E C T Roland Auzet has created a musical piece based on the writings of Simone Weil, for an orchestra of 75/80 musicians and electronic music, that converses with an actress, Kristin Scott Thomas, using scenography that links the public and the stage by a footbridge designed by the architect Paul Andreu. This piece was created to be played in auditoriums in order to open such venues up to musical theatre and scenography. The footbridge will be adaptable to the different venues. The project is initiated by the Grand Théâtre de Provence in Aix-en-Provence. The following orchestras are co-producers: the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, the Orchestre National de Lille, the Orchestre Philharmonique Royal de Liège, The Barcelona Symphony and Catalonia National Orchestra. A Chamber Orchestra version will be written (around 18 musicians).
