DAY 2 PRESCHOOL BIBLE LESSON LESSON TITLE: Jesus Heals the Paralytic LESSON OVERVIEW: You will be introducing the story with a skit using either a puppet, or maybe a teen volunteer. You will be reading the story in a manner they can understand, so the children will understand kindness to our friends, and that Jesus is mighty to heal and forgive. BIBLE STORY: Jesus Heals the Paralytic (Mark 2:1 12) MEMORY VERSE:...and they praised God saying, we have never seen anything like this. Mark 2:12b TEACHING OBJECTIVE: To teach kids that Jesus forgives and heals and He wants our friends to know Him. SUPPLIES NEEDED FOR THE LESSON Part 1: Bible Lesson: A puppet or volunteer, a small bag with supplies in for the puppets sick friend (tiny blanket, get well card, little stuffed animal, gum, chocolate kiss, etc.), your bible, a shoebox or other box with a hole cut through the top, a little doll or animal, a piece of cardboard and 4 pieces of string or yarn. Part 2: Memory Verse Activity: Index cards, method to play music Part 3: Craft: White cardstock, crayons, glue sticks, hole punch and yarn

PART 1: BIBLE LESSON (15 minutes) BIBLE LESSON TEXT: Mark 2:1 12 SUPPLIES: A puppet or volunteer, a small bag with supplies in for the puppets sick friend (tiny blanket, get well card, little stuffed animal, gum, chocolate kiss, etc.), your bible, a shoebox or other box with a hole cut through the top, a little doll or animal, a piece of cardboard and 4 pieces of string or yarn. PREPARE: Put the supplies in the small bag and put the puppet and his little bag in a bag or basket for you to carry in with you. Have the hole cut into the cardboard box then attach the yarn to all 4 sides of the piece of cardboard so it can be used as a mat to lower the doll or animal down through the hole in the roof of the box. INTRODUCTION TO LESSON: Hi, I ve brought a special friend with me today. I know he/she is excited to meet you, so I will get him/her out. Hi, Kiwi, are you happy to see all these kids here today? (have the puppet nod, wave, etc. to interact with you and the kids) I am so glad you are all here too! (you can have the puppet whisper in your ear, or some puppets make squeaking sounds, etc.) Did you bring something to show us today? (look in your bag and find his little bag and pull it out) Well, what I found was this little bag full of stuff, is this yours? ( puppet whispers to you) Oh, you have a friend who is sick? (he nods and whispers to you again) and you hope the things in this bag will make him feel better? (he nods again) (You can take the things out and talk about how the might help his friend feel better) Kiwi, that is so nice of you to want to help your friends when they are sick. What do you think kids? would these things help his friend? Let s say a prayer for Kiwi and his friend. Dear Jesus, we thank you for our friends, help us to be kind and loving to them. We ask that you would make Kiwi s friend feel better real soon. In Jesus name, amen. You know, today s story is about a man who was sick and how his friends helped him to Jesus so Jesus could heal him. Let s give Kiwi a hug first, then I will put him down for his nap. BIBLE LESSON: Teaching Tip: Always have your Bible open to the Scripture you are telling the story from so children will know that what you are teaching them is from the Bible, God s Word. Today s lesson is found in Mark 2:1 12. Ok, as I read the story, every time you hear the word Jesus, I want you to make a cross with your fingers like this (use your index fingers to make a cross) and when I say paralyzed man, I want you to put your hands up to the side of your head like this, like you are sleeping. Do you know what paralyzed means? (some may know a little). A person who is paralyzed can t move most of their body. They had to lay down or sit in one spot all the time. They had to have help to do anything. That would be so hard. Do you know anyone who uses a wheelchair? They help so much don t they? But, they didn t have wheelchairs then so people had to carry them. 2

Here is our story, (open your Bible) remember when I say Jesus, make your finger cross, and when I say paralyzed man, lay your hands by your head like you are sleeping. When the people found out Jesus was home, probably at Peter s house, so many people came to see him, that the whole house full clear out the door. No one could get in! Jesus was teaching them about God. There were four men carrying their friend, a paralyzed man on a mat to come see Jesus. They wanted Jesus to heal the paralyzed man. Since they could not get in to see Jesus, do you know what they did? They climbed up on the roof, and cut a hole in it! Wow, can you imagine being in your house and someone just cutting a hole in your roof! That would be crazy! But they loved their friend so much that they would do anything to get him to Jesus. The four friends lowered the paralyzed man down through the roof on his mat with rope. When Jesus saw the mat with the paralyzed man on it come down, Jesus knew they all had faith in him. He said, young man your sins are forgiven, get up and walk. And you know what, he did! He wasn t paralyzed anymore! And all the people were amazed. And they praised God saying, we have never seen anything like this. They must have been so excited and happy! We can bring our friends to Jesus too. We can bring our friends to church with us, or tell them all about Jesus ourselves. We can also pray for them. God wants us to love and care for our friends just like they did. Can you tell me the name of one of your friends? What are some ways that you show them that you care? EXTRA ACTIVITY: Set up the box you have with the hole in the top, and let the kids take turns lowering the animal or doll on the little mat down through the hole. Talk about loving our friends, and how Jesus loves our friends, too. You could also use a towel and let the take turns carrying the animal or doll on the towel with one child holding each end of the towel. 3

PART 2: MEMORY VERSE ACTIVITY/GAME (15 minutes)...and they praised God saying, we have never seen anything like this. Mark 2:12b SUPPLIES: Bible, index cards for extra activity. PREPARATION: Learn the motions to the verse and prep for the extra activity as instructed. READ THE VERSE: Read the verse out loud several times (making sure that you have your Bible open to the scripture in Mark 2:12b) EXPLAIN THE VERSE: What are some ways we can praise God?( Give them time to answer,) Yes those are good ways. We can sing to god, we can read the bible, we can listen to our Sunday school teachers, there are so many ways we can let God know we love him. Music is my favorite. And clapping too. Let s clap our hands for Jesus! We can jump up and down for Jesus! LEARN THE VERSE: Let s do motions for the verse. (make clapping motions with your hands up and to the left) and they praised God (point to the sky) saying (start your index finger at your mouth and go upward in circle motions) we have never (shake you pointer finger as if saying no) seen anything (take your index finger and middle finger like a peace sign, and point to your eyes) like this (put your hands up and out to the side). Have them do it a few times, maybe whispering, then loud, etc. EXTRA ACTIVITY: Memory Verse Matches Preparation: Create at least 10 15 sets of matching cards with different shapes, symbols, etc. on them. Have all of your children sit in a circle. Give each child one card to hold. Tell the children that you want them to pass their cards to the person sitting next to them when the music starts. Whenever they get passed a card, they must pass it to their friend next to them. Do a little trial run before putting on the the music. Put some music on. At some point, stop the music and ask the children to see who is holding a card with a cross on it. All the children who are holding a cross get to say the memory verse you have been learning. Praise them for a job well done, then play the game again. Next time, pick a different picture. Instead of playing music, you might want to say the verse out loud one or more times before stopping the passing. Or you may want to put the verse you have been working on to a familiar tune and sing it as you pass the cards around. 4

JESUS HEALS THE PARALYTIC PART 3: CRAFT (15 minutes) SUPPLIES: White cardstock, crayons, glue sticks, hole punch and yarn PREPARATION: Make copies of the template found on page 6 of this lesson and gather the rest of supplies. Pre cut yarn strips. INSTRUCTION: 1. Have your child color the little man, his 2 faces, and mat. 2. Have them cut out all pieces or help them do it. 3. Glue faces to opposite sides of man's head. 4. Punch holes in four corners of mat/carpet (make sure you do not get to close to the edges or it will tear easily). 5. Cut 4 12 inch pieces of yarn for each kid. Tie one to each corner of mat through holes and tie all four together at other end. EXTRA ACTIVITY: Color Sheet on Page 7 of this lesson. 5
