Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida! January 22-26, 2018 District Blake Wednesday, 1/24: Poetry Jam The three weeks prior to Celebrate All Things Reading! the following activities will be introduced, completed and placed on display during our celebration week. Student created bumper stickers to encourage reading. The World Languages department will participate by creating bumper stickers in different languages as well as our Reading classes. I Love Reading bulletin board. Students will be given hearts of different shapes and sizes and encouraged to write/draw/create a positive message about reading. Reading PSA. The TV and Film department will create reading PSAs which will be shown each day during our Celebrate All Things Reading! SGA and the Media Center will use their social media accounts to tweeted out the PSAs and also post on Instagram. Students will create 2D and 3D art pieces in response to a Florida Teens Read book they have read. The art work will be displayed that week. Students will create a digital response to a Florida Teens Read book they have read. The videos and PSAs will be put on a loop and shown that week. Week of Celebrate All Things Reading!

Bloomingdale Monday: Continental breakfast for the staff will be served in the Media Center. Teachers will fill out hearts during breakfast to be on display throughout the week. Have English and Reading classes come thru the media center during the week to see the displays and videos. Tuesday: Sock It to Reading Encourage students and staff to wear crazy socks. Wednesday: During lunch times Golden Mic, our monthly open mic event, will have the ASL students signing their own poems. Thursday: Comic/Manga/Super Hero Dress Up Day. Encourage students and staff to dress up as their favor super hero, comic book character or graphic novel character to support reading of all types and genres. Friday: Have a local author and former teacher at Blake come and speak to our students on the writing process. Before Literacy Week begins: Announcements on morning show to publicize book drive; door decorating contest rules/procedures Set date for English/Reading Read-In (*this date could be different among teachers, but will take place during Celebrate Literacy Week) meet with teachers to establish day and fun ways to implement Distribute Currently Reading posters to teachers to display outside their doors Create game plan for Book Tastings for reading classes, date(s) TBD but will likely be scheduled for Thursday, 1/25 Reading teachers sign up to bring classes into media center for Book Tasting where students visit tables and sample books from different genres *this event is tentative based on availability of media center at that time Monday, January 22: Book drive collection begins and runs through Friday, 1/26 Reading and English teachers show PPT about Public Library Resources and distribute library card applications to students who don t already have (and can show) a public library card teachers collect applications throughout week; final count of applications/cards on Thursday at the end of the day Teachers publicize Read-In day to their classes Create matrix card, based on Currently Reading posters Tuesday, January 23: Display book quote posters around main campus areas students can complete entry form on which they record the source of the quote. Entry forms collected in media center for a chance to win a gift card to local restaurant. o morning show announcement to publicize contest rules/procedures; place entry forms in media center for students to pick up and post to Bull Pen so teachers can upload to Edsby or print and distribute, if desired Wednesday, January 24:

Students can pick up matrix card for Currently Reading posters from media center students complete Bingo card, scavenger hunt style. Completed cards will be entered into a drawing for a B&N gift card Thursday, January 25: Book Tasting event for reading classes in the media center* Decorated doors must be complete. Judging will begin at 1:15. Library Card holder numbers due at the end of the day Friday, January 26: Winners of all contests announced at the end of the day (door decorating contest, Currently Reading scavenger hunt, and library card holders) Social Media Campaign Kick-off #BookSnaps On Monday January 22 nd, we will be kicking off a social media campaign to get students reading. Using different social media outlets, students will create book snaps and submit to Durant Reads. Durant Prizes Include: Most Creative $25 Most Scholarly $25 Most Inspiring $25 Overall Best Reading Book Snap $50 Example (more to come)

Monday January 22 nd Literacy Week Kick-off!!! Reading is Lit! Book Club Skype and breakfast with Christina Diaz-Gonzalez author of Moving Target and The Red Umbrella. Breakfast sponsored by Lanie Randall, Media Specialist. Drop Everything and Read during HR Tuesday January 23 rd - Door Decorating Contest(Prize for teachers 1 st $100, 2 nd, $50 3 rd $25) Hillsborough County Public Library will set up during lunches to discuss and promote HAAL Pass. Wednesday January 24 th - Wear a Word Day! Wear and advertise your favorite school appropriate vocabulary word. Prizes for most creative (teacher and students). Thursday January 25 th - Read Aloud Day- Every Period, Every Teacher- Dress like your favorite BOOK character- Have a copy of that book on you. Every teacher in the school will read a short Read Aloud. At the end of the day the students will vote for their favorite Read Aloud and the top three teachers will win a Barnes and Noble gift card. Friday January 26 th Literacy in the Courtyard- students can take a book to keep and we will have chairs in the courtyard for students to read during lunches. Barnes & Noble will be serving coffee and hot chocolate to students in the courtyard. Parents will be invited and there will be

a special section for family books. Our SGA and Councils will be in the courtyard promoting this. East Bay High School Literacy Week Read Aloud Contest Teachers will read aloud a text of their choice to all of their classes during the school day. At the end of the day students will vote for the teacher with the best read aloud and that teacher will be recognized and win a prize. East Bay Bookmark Decoration- Due Thursday, January 25 th Winner announced Friday, January 26 th Students will decorate a bookmark with a literature theme. Media Specialist/Reading Coach will judge for the top 3 bookmarks. Those students will be recognized and win a prize. Door Decoration- all week Winner announced Friday, January 26 th Teachers will decorate their door with a literature theme. By Friday all the doors will be judged and the winning teacher will receive prizes for their classes. Get Caught Reading- all week All week long as students are seen reading outside of their classes they will receive candy. Students will also receive a ticket to be entered into a raffle drawing at the end of the week.

Jefferson King We will have a mystery reader read each morning during announcements (usually a well known teacher or administrator) and have a contest each day with prizes for those that guess the mystery reader correctly. Offer a Book mark contest for the whole school with 4 prizes for the winners. Have the book marks printed at the local printer (utilize community partners) and then send out the book marks to our feeder schools (cross school support) and utilize them in our own media center

Kick Off JAWS Homeroom (Zelazo/Overstreet) Morning Show Presentations - Students from Creative Writing and TV Production classes will present project. Lit. Rocks (ongoing all week) Student discover colored rocks in obvious locations on school campus. Underneath the rock will be instruction to post a picture of themselves with the rock on social media (FINS LMS). They place the rock somewhere on campus or keep it and create a new rock to hide. The rock will have a literary character or quote for them to read and share. Sidewalk Chalk (on-going) featuring teen novel titles, literacy facts and library check out stats. Poetry Jam Remix Student enjoyed Poetry Jam so much we will be doing a return performance exposing more students to the love of poetry. Teachers will place posters in their windows saying what their favorite books are. Tweet/IG Who Got Caught Reading Blind Date with a Book! : Check out a mystery book and get entered into a drawing to win a prize! Reading Rocks- Wear crazy socks! Students from the Book Club will go to out ECE class and read to students. They will present the children with books to take home to keep!! -Teachers read to students from their favorite book. Students go to the MC to vote on which teacher s reading they enjoyed best and that teacher will win a prize. -The students can compete in a Goose Chase Scavenger Hunt around the Media Center. This will take place before and after school and during all three lunches. -Be a good sport and read! Students will wear their favorite team jerseys. Weeklong Events: -Get Caught reading outside of class and be entered into a drawing to win a prize!
