Well written book for all helicopter pilots By R. Randall Padfield A highly experienced pilot, test pilot and instructor, Shawn Coyle writes in a conversationally, yet technically oriented way. I highly recommend this book and two other books he has written: "The Art and Science of Flying Helicopters" and "The Little Book of Autorotations." If I were teaching an introductory course on flying helicopters, I would (in all modesty) begin with my own book on the subject, "Learning to Fly Helicopters, Second Edition," and the "FAA s Rotorcraft Flying Handbook" as an additional reference, then have the students read "Cyclic and Collective" and "The Art and Science of Flying Helicopters." "The Little Book of Autorotations" is valuable for all helicopter pilots, whether in training or already licensed, and is a must read for anyone planning to become a helicopter flight instructor. 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Poorly written. By Jade E. Dillon The author is obviously an experienced helicopter pilot with much knowledge, but this book is poorly written and does not effectively communicate ideas. Most concepts I had to review elsewhere for clarification. I am unsure why someone would, in a technical manual, insert humorous quips, but the author does, averaging one every couple of pages. These come off as wiseass remarks; I personally found them stupid, annoying, and distracting. There are a multitude of typographical errors which occasionally impair readability; knowing the subject matter, one is able to figure out what is meant, but that requires going back over the paragraph. I
found a couple of factual errors. The pictures are borrowed (acknowledgements provided), poorly printed with faint lines and cutoffs, basically useless. There are superior manuals available. See all 14 customer reviews...
