2017 2018 SEASON ACT I: SHAKESPEARE AS YOU LIKE IT BY WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE DIRECTED BY JOHN DOYLE ORIGINAL MUSIC BY STEPHEN SCHWARTZ SEP 2017 MEMBER BOOKING BEGINS AUGUST 1; PUBLIC BOOKING BEGINS AUGUST 22 An exiled Duke, his banished daughter, a gentleman in love, and a melancholy traveler. Artistic Director John Doyle and Tony Award-winning composer Stephen Schwartz bring Shakespeare s pastoral romance into the Jazz Age, with lovers in disguise, troubadours in trouble, and some of Shakespeare s most beloved characters. TWELFTH NIGHT BY WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE NOV 2017 Shipwrecked on the island of Illyria, Viola and her twin brother Sebastian are separated, each fearing the other lost to the sea. Viola disguises herself as a boy and wades into a complex romantic triangle with Duke Orsino and the Countess Olivia. New York s innovative Fiasco Theater brings their hallmark style and expansive imagination to one of Shakespeare s most popular comedies. ACT II: AMERICANS FIRE AND AIR BY TERRENCE MCNALLY DIRECTED BY JOHN DOYLE JAN 2018 WORLD PREMIERE This world premiere by Tony Award winner Terrence McNally explores the rich history of the Ballets Russes, Sergei Diaghilev s itinerant Russian ballet company. Surrounded by great talents of art, design, and music, the tempestuous relationship between Diaghilev and dancer Vaslav Nijinsky revolutionizes dance forever. SUMMER AND SMOKE BY TENNESSEE WILLIAMS DIRECTED BY JACK CUMMINGS III APR 2018 In turn-of-the-century Mississippi, the local minister s daughter walks the line between piety and sensuality with the neighborhood doctor who grew up next door. Jack Cummings III, Artistic Director of the award-winning Transport Group, helms this sultry Southern Gothic masterpiece marking Tennessee Williams long overdue debut at CSC. ACT III: MUSICAL THEATER CARMEN JONES BOOK AND LYRICS BY OSCAR HAMMERSTEIN II MUSIC BY GEORGES BIZET DIRECTED BY JOHN DOYLE JUN 2018 As the Second World War rages, parachute maker Carmen Jones wages her own quarrel involving an airman and a boxer. Using the score from Georges Bizet s opera Carmen, this adaptation by Oscar Hammerstein II resets the story with an all African-American cast, and is the first major New York revival since its debut on Broadway 75 years ago. ACT YOUNG THE STOWAWAY BASED ON THE PLAYS OF WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE WRITTEN AND DIRECTED BY DREW PETERSEN NOV 2017 AGES 5+ STUDENT MATINEES FOR SCHOOLS AVAILABLE Times are changing on the Island of Hockey Puck. A new Duke is ruling with an iron fist, the old Duke disappeared in a puddle of mystery, and a stowaway named Dull is on the run from it all back to her homeland of Illyria. Inspired by Shakespeare and shipwrecks, this world premiere by the acclaimed Trusty Sidekick Theater Company uses puppetry, live music, and a sea of imagination. JULIUS CAESAR BY WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE MAR 2018 AGES 12+ STUDENT MATINEES FOR SCHOOLS AVAILABLE A triumphant leader is welcomed home from war with honors. But some wonder: has he been given too much power? Political alliances face off in Shakespeare s tragedy of democracy gone wrong in a sharp, energetic production specifically tailored for young audiences. Accompanied by actor-driven workshops, CSC has made Shakespeare engaging and accessible for thousands of New York City students for well over a decade.
