Anat Cohen, clarinet/saxophone Winner of nine consecutive Jazz Journalist Association awards for Clarinetist of the Year, multiple DownBeat Critics and Readers Polls, and a wealth of other accolades, Israeli-born clarinetist and saxophonist Anat Cohen has taken the jazz world by storm, winning hearts and minds the world over with her expressive virtuosity and delightful stage presence. An established bandleader and prolific composer, Cohen s music is a unique blend of modern and traditional jazz, classical music, Brazilian choro, Argentine tango, and an expansive timeline of Afro Cuban styles. The New York Times describes Cohen as a clarinetist of reliable ebullience, and the Wall Street Journal writes, What s not to love about a young clarinetist and saxophonist who plays everything we love modern jazz, world music, hot New Orleans style jazz and does it all brilliantly? In 2015 Cohen will be showcasing her love of all Brazilian music including BMP, Tropicalia, and Choro with a new as-of-yet untitled studio recording and a new touring project called Celebrando Brasil: From Rio to Minas. Rodney Whitaker, bass Internationally renowned bassist and Mack Avenue recording artist, Rodney Whitaker is one of the world s most renowned double bass performers, educators, and mentors, and he is dedicated to inspiring and growing the next generation of jazz educators and musicians. A Detroit native, he grew up in the city soaking in the sounds of jazz and classical music and working with the finest musicians in the city. Building on his Detroit roots and enormous talent, Whitaker went on to earn an international reputation as one of the world s finest jazz double bass performers. He completed a seven-year tenure as bassist with Wynton Marsalis s Sextet and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, and he has toured the world over the past twenty-six years, collaborating with more than one hundred legendary performing jazz artists including Dianne Reeves, Hank Jones, Mulgrew Miller, Diana Krall, John Lewis, Kathleen Battle, Marian McPartland, Wycliffe Gordon, Kenny Garrett, Bradford Marsalis, Bob James, Betty Be-Bop Carter, and Chick Corea. In addition, he has appeared and presented masterclasses at the International Association of Jazz Educators (IAJE) conferences. Featured on more than one hundred recordings, from film to compact discs, he was nominated for an Emmy in the Original Music category for Malawi and Malaria: Fighting to Save the Children produced by Robert Gould and Sue Carter. He is a professor of jazz double bass and director of jazz studies at Michigan State University. Sean Dobbins, drums Sean Dobbins got his start as a sought-after Detroit area jazz sideman at a young age, when he would regularly play with Blue Note artist Louis Smith. As Dobbins s career progressed, he found himself the recipient of many awards and accolades including the Woody Herman Jazz Award, an award for outstanding musicianship, as well as the Louis Armstrong Scholarship. Dobbins has been the focus of countless news articles, jazz radio programs, and documentaries. Though still young by jazz standards, Dobbins has amassed an impressive list of playing companions. He has performed/toured/recorded with Johnny Basset, Benny Golson, Lonnie Smith, Frank Morgan, Joey DeFrancesco, George Cables, James Blood Ulmer, Rodney Whitaker, Claude Black, Johnny O Neal, Paul Keller, Tad Weed, Jon Hendricks, David Fathead Newman, Donald Walden, Cyrus Chestnut, Marion Hayden, Mose Allison, and a host of other great musicians. Dobbins s sound can best be described as hard-driving, solid rhythm with refreshing melodic sensibility. Some of his influences include Art Blakey, Jeff Hamilton, Jeff Tain Watts, Ed Thigpen, and Sonny Payne, as well as Detroit-area greats Gerald Cleaver and the one and only Elvin Jones. 3

His recordings include Russell Malone s Black Butterfly and Motley s own latest CD, Departure. He has performed with Benny Golson, Eddie Daniels, Carmen Bradford, Kenny Barron, Dave Brubeck, and others. A member of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences and the Jazz Education Network, Motley was recently inducted in to the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame. He has a master s degree in jazz program administration from Georgia State University. Dwight D. Andrews, associate professor, music theory, African American music Dwight D. Andrews, composer, musician, educator, and minister, joined the Emory faculty in 1987. A native of Detroit, Michigan, Andrews is also senior minister of First Congregational United Church of Christ in Atlanta. With bachelor s and master s degrees in music from the University of Michigan, he continued his studies at Yale University, receiving a master of divinity degree and a PhD in music theory. Andrews s honors include a 2005 Lexus Leader of the Arts Award, a Pew Trust/TCG Artist Residency Fellowship, a Mellon Fellowship, Emory University s Distinguished Teacher Award, and the Yale Tercentenary Medal from the Yale Club of Georgia. Andrews was the artistic director of the National Black Arts Festival (1996 1998) and, in 1997, was named the first Quincy Jones Visiting Professor of African American Music at Harvard University. Andrews was a guest visiting professor of composition at the Yale School of Music in 2003 and gave the 2004 Alain Locke Lectures at Harvard. Emory Jazz artist affiliates Dan Baraszu, guitar, combo instructor Detroit-born guitarist-composer Dan Baraszu started playing guitar at age nine. Early in his career, he explored many different styles of music. However, when he first heard the genius of jazz guitarist Wes Montgomery, Baraszu devoted himself to becoming a die-hard jazz artist. His major influences include guitarists Joe Pass, Pat Martino, Pat Metheny, and John Scofield as well as other instrumentalists like Bill Evans, Horace Silver, John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, and Charlie Parker. In addition to studying the works of the masters of the jazz idiom, Baraszu also has a formal education in music. He received a bachelor s degree from the renowned Berklee College of Music, where he majored in jazz composition and arranging. In addition, Baraszu received a master s degree from the University of Miami with a major in jazz pedagogy. Baraszu resides in Atlanta where he works as a freelance guitarist. 6

Justin Chesarek, drums Justin Chesarek of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, has been studying and performing music since a young age. While earning a bachelor s degree in music education at Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania Chesarek traveled abroad and performed at the Montreux and North Sea Jazz Festivals in Europe. A graduate of Georgia State University with a master of music degree, Chesarek teaches as an artist affiliate at Emory. He has had the opportunity to perform with Wynton Marsalis, Christian McBride, John Faddis, Dave Samuels, Gary Smulyan, Michael Mossman, and Jerry Bergonzi. Chesarek performs throughout the Atlanta area, and you can hear him weekly at Atlanta s premiere jazz club, Churchill Grounds. Randy Hunter, saxophone Randy Hunter is a professional saxophonist, educational author, and private instructor from the Atlanta area. He studied music education with an emphasis in jazz pedagogy at Valdosta State College. With a focus on generating educational jazz material, Hunter s endeavors are best represented by his series of etude, duet, and combo method books under the title, Complete Jazz Styles. Several of the books have received endorsements from well-known jazz artists including Joe Lovano, Jerry Bergonzi, Randy Brecker, Bobby Shew, and John Fedchock. Hunter performs regularly in Atlanta, and he has an extensive performance, recording, and arranging history, including work with Duffy Jackson, Chubby Jackson, Cab Calloway, the Glenn Miller Band, and others. Bob Lewis, trombone and trumpet One of the most in-demand brass players in the Atlanta area, Bob Lewis has performed with many jazz icons from Lionel Hampton to Tony Bennett. He has recorded with artists including Matchbox 20 and the Four Freshmen (Grammy nomination). Lewis has also shared his musical skills on the soundtracks of several projects for the History Channel, the Weather Channel, PBS, and Good Day Atlanta. A graduate of Berry College, Lewis studied trombone with Harry Maddox, former principal trombonist with the Atlanta Symphony. Chris Riggenbach, double bass and electric bass Originally from the Atlanta area, bassist Chris Riggenbach has been a professional musician for more than fifteen years. He has a bachelor s degree in jazz studies from Georgia State University. For ten years, he played in show bands and jazz trios for Carnival Cruise Lines. Later, Riggenbach moved to Poland with his wife. In 2010, Riggenbach toured internationally with the Josh Lawrence Jazz 3 featuring trumpeter Josh Lawrence and drummer Mike DeCastro. The group performed at the Sopot Molo Jazz Festival, Piwnica pod Baranami in Krakow, and several other jazz festivals in Poland. Riggenbach has also performed with the Gavin Ahearn Trio, Larry Camp Quartet, Jazz Legacy Big Band, Gold Sparkle Band, Kenny Drew Jr., Matt Bokulic, Bill Van Dyke, Gwen Hughes, and Wild Rice. 7
