Jesus Christ Superstar First-Round Auditions April 18 th OR 19 th OR 21 st Callbacks April 23 rd at 2 PM To sign up for an Audition Date/Time, use this URL: www.signupgenius.com/go/5080c4da4aa29a3f49-audition What is ACT1? ACT1 is an all volunteer, non Equity, no fee community theater with a focus on wholesome entertainment. Now in our 22 nd year, we re proud to bring you top quality theatrical productions. You ll find us in performance in several major productions each year. Among our many full length shows have been Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, It s a Wonderful Life, The Importance of Being Earnest, The Wind in the Willows, Annie, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Once Upon a Mattress, and many others. Our most recent summer musical was Seussical the Musical. ACT1 is the proud recipient of several Metropolitan Atlanta Theater awards, including 5 for our production of Fiddler on the Roof. We are sponsored by Alpharetta Presbyterian Church, and provide entertainment to the community without religious bias. In addition to using many experienced theater folks, one of the objectives of our work is to provide a venue for those who have never been involved with theater before. We enjoy seeing new folks discover a love of theater whether that s performing on the stage; building sets; making costumes; or working as a stage hand, lighting technician or sound technician. As new cast and crew members learn the ropes and become seasoned pros, they may decide to try their hand at stage managing or directing. All of our cast, crew, and management are volunteers. But, no matter what role you choose, this will be the most fun that you have had in a long time! The actors and crew always form bonds that make this more than a hobby it s family. Can I Review the Script in Advance? Scripts are not yet available; however, all lines in this production are sung (welcome to the world of Lloyd Webber/Rice!) and the lyrics are easily accessible on the internet. In addition, there are many videos of stage and movie versions available on YouTube. What will auditions be like? ALL AUDITIONS MUST BE BY APPOINTMENT VIA THE SIGN UP LINK ON THE WEBSITE, OR IF NOT ABLE TO ACCESS THIS LINK BY CALLING THE DIRECTOR AT 678 234 5801. Upon your arrival we ll have you sign in, get an audition number, and fill out an audition form. You should save time by downloading the forms on our website and bringing them in completed. Please arrive at least 15 minutes prior to your appointment time if you need to fill out forms. Don t worry if you ve never auditioned before experience is not required. If you have a headshot, bring it along. If not, we ll take a picture during your sign in. Another form you must turn in is the signature page of your participation agreement; please read and save our policies/expectations and remove and turn in the completed signature page.

Please note that there are required hours to assist with areas supporting the production. If you are under 18 years old, a parent must read and sign this form as well. Once you have your forms completed, you will let the host or hostess know you are ready. You will be brought in for a cold reading in the form of a monologue. It s known as cold reading, because you re not expected to memorize anything in advance. The material you need will be given to you. For those who like to prepare, the monologues are included at the bottom of this file. You may be asked to perform more than one character. Next, you will be moved into the theater for the vocal audition. You should have chosen a song from the list below. The sound technician will be able to load karaoke style the number of your choice. When this portion of your audition is over, you are free to go. You may audition either Tuesday or Wednesday; you do not need to attend both days; the audition process will be exactly the same for both days. College students should contact the director as soon as possible; special arrangements can be made to audition while in town over your Spring Break! Among the things we ll be looking for are: Voice quality Can you project, so that you ll be heard from the back of the auditorium? Energy can we hear the interest and excitement in your voice? Facial Expression Does it match the words you re reading? Character Can you be the person you re reading? Willingness Can you follow instructions and give it your best shot? After the two days of initial auditions, callback notifications will be made to those moving on to the second phase of auditions on Saturday, April 22 nd. If you don t hear from us, thanks but we were not able to use you this time. Callbacks will be held on Sunday, April 23 rd from 2 5 pm. Everyone who has been called back should plan to be there for the entire session. You will be taught some choreography, after which you will audition with the choreography piece. You will also be asked to audition vocally with a number from the production. In addition, you may be asked to read lines from various characters with other actors so we get a feel for your acting range and ability to play off of other actors. How will you pick the cast? To sign up for an Audition Date/Time, use this URL: www.signupgenius.com/go/5080c4da4aa29a3f49-audition Many things go into putting a cast together. Of course, your performance at the audition is important, but so are other things that are not in your control. The script dictates, to a large extent, who will be cast. As an example, characters playing members of a family should look like they could be family. So casting is a process of finding good actors of an appropriate age who fit in combination with the other

actors. No parts are pre cast, and everyone who gets a part will have auditioned at one of the 2 initially scheduled times, unless special arrangements are made in advance. When will I know if I m cast? If we are able to cast you, we will call you no later than Tuesday, April 25th. If you don t hear from us, we were not able to use you this time. The number of people who audition prevents us from calling everyone. But remember, that doesn t mean you did a poor job, and please come back to audition for another show. What am I committing to? By coming to auditions you re not committing to anything. Come try us out and see what you think. If we offer you a part, and you accept, then you are making a commitment to attend every rehearsal possible. That means you can t miss a rehearsal unless it s absolutely necessary and you ve told the Stage Manager 2 weeks in advance. No absences are allowed during the last two weeks of rehearsals. Even if you have your part perfected and don t feel you need to be there, remember that your fellow actors are dependent on you being where you re supposed to be. If someone has a line to deliver to you and you re not there, it makes it very difficult to stay in character and keep the scene running smoothly. A major factor in a production not getting to a polished, professional level is a cast that is erratic in attendance. OK, enough preaching just want you to understand the importance of being at rehearsals. Tell me about this play! It seems especially fitting that the first rock opera, created as a concept album at the end of the turbulent '60s, should have at its center a social and political rebel. Jesus' meteor like rise in renown provides, as the title suggests, a parallel to contemporary celebrity worship. As his radical teachings are evermore embraced, Judas increasingly questions the enlightened motives of this new prophet, resulting in betrayal. Christ's final days are dramatized with emotional intensity, thought provoking edge and explosive theatricality. And did you note that it s a rock opera? We intend to make the audience be thoughtful about the message and journey of Christ, while rocking the house with some great music! What are the roles available? To sign up for an Audition Date/Time, use this URL: www.signupgenius.com/go/5080c4da4aa29a3f49-audition Mary Magdalene (Mezzo Soprano, F3 Eb5); Follower, caretaker; shunned by Judas Jesus of Nazareth (Tenor, A2 G5); At turns resigned, then angry. Questions his role. Judas Iscariot (Tenor, D3 D5); Loves Jesus but lives in the real world. Cynical. King Herod (Tenor, C#3 G4); Sarcastic and dismissive. Caiaphas (Bass, C#2 F4); Head Priest with a plan. Peter (Baritone, A2 G4); Denies he knows Christ. Pontius Pilate (Bari Tenor, A2 B4); Conflicted Roman. Simon Zealotes (Tenor, G3 B4); The ultimate fan.

Annas (Counter Tenor, G2 D5); Priest, Caiaphas right hand man Ensemble members portraying various characters such as Apostles, Merchants, Soldiers, Priests, Temple Ladies, Soul Girls, etc. (15 18 members, all ranges needed) What about rehearsals? Our schedule calls for 3 rehearsals a week, for 11 weeks, followed by 4 weekends of performances. Our first rehearsal is scheduled for Sunday, May 7th. Rehearsals are normally on Tuesday and Thursdays evenings at 7:00pm and Sundays at 2:00 PM. We take very seriously your commitment and your time. The schedule will be laid out in advance, and only vary rarely deviated from. PLEASE NOTE: there are rehearsals during holidays these are NOT optional. Do note that we want you to honor your Moms and Dads and have flipped the Sunday of their special days to a Saturday rehearsal! The very first rehearsal will be a read through and will include the entire cast. It s just what it sounds like we ll all sit around and read the script. It s the time to meet your fellow actors, hear the Director s vision for the show, begin to assimilate your character, work on any tricky pronunciation, etc. We ll give you your copy of the script, the schedule, and any other material you ll need. After that, the next set of rehearsals will be broken down, scene by scene, and we ll learn individual songs and do the blocking. Blocking is the term used for any stage movement crossing from one side to the other, sitting down, standing up all the stuff that supports your lines. We will then work in choreography. Bring a pencil and make notes in your script as you work. Once we re through these working rehearsals, we re now about 4 weeks in, and we ve worked on every scene for at least 3 rehearsals, and it s time to combine them, and run the full act, and later the full show, fine tuning as we go. Expect about 40 rehearsals in all. The last two weeks have reserved every day for rehearsals, which will be scheduled on an as needed basis. When are Performances? Currently, there are plans for 12 performances of this show July 14th to August 6th. Here s the performance schedule: July 14 8 pm July 15 8 pm July 16 2 pm July 21 8 pm July 22 8 pm July 23 2 pm July 28 8 pm July 29 8 pm July 30 2 pm August 4 8pm August 5 8 pm August 6 2 pm
