FOREWORD The renowned chilean poet Gabriela Mistral was the first Latin American to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature. Her work as a writer, teacher and diplomat, dedicated to a more humane and compassionate world, has made her one of the most admired figures of our times. The Department of Cultural Affairs of the Organization of American States has been privileged to sponsor a project of an "Inventory of Unpublished Papers of Gabriela Mistral", accomplished with the generous financial assistance of the Government of Chile. This project has brought together letters, diplomatic papers and other personal documents of the great poet, heretofore housed in diverse locales. This collection, Series IV of the Gabriela Mistral Papers, was microfilmed by the Library of Congress and consists of holograph manuscripts of poetry and prose, working papers, correspondence and notes of this truly remarkable literary figure. The preparation and publishing of this Index, which is to serve as a research guide to the Gabriela Mistral papers, has made it possible to bring together all earlier collections of 'microfilmed papers (Series I to III) with the recently microfilmed archives of her correspondence (Series IV). The realization of this project was made possible through the cooperation of Doris Dana, Executrix for Gabriela Mistral, who has given so much of her time and effort to the continued recognition of the poet's literary legacy. The Index, as well as the arrangement and preparation for microfilming the papers of all four Series, was accomplished by Doris Dana. In indexing Series I and organizing the correspondence included in Series IV, she was assisted by Gaston von dem Bussche, Professor of Literature from Chile. It is hoped that the material now available on microfilm, accessible through this Index, will renew world-wide interest in the study of the works of Gabriela Mistral. It is further hoped that additional papers may come to light in the future which may then be added to this collection. Roberto Etchepareborda Director Department of Cultural Affairs
MICROFILM COLLECTION Photographers occasionally filmed the notebooks in the wrong sequence. They therefore do not appear in the numerical order of their original arrangement. Series II was filmed in 1960 by The University of Chile and financed by Doris Dana. This series of three reels consists of manuscripts of early poetry and prose -prior to 1922 -much of which was published indesolaci6n. Photographers misplaced the target letters. It is best to ignore all target letters except the initial target Item "A" (the prose series) and Item "C" (the beginning of a new pagination sequence for poetry.) Items "0" through "WI' are filmed correctly. Series III was filmed and financed by The Library of Congress in1967. It contains one reel of working papers for Lagar and Ternura and miscellaneous unpublished poetry. Series IV was filmed in 1982 by The Library of Congress under the auspices of the Organization of American States. These 20 reels of microfilm contain the archives of Gabriela Mistral's correspondence and consulate papers, as well as miscellaneous manuscripts of pros'e and poetry. This microfilm collection, comprising Series I to IV of the Gabriela Mistral Papers, can be consulted at the present time at the National Library of Chile in Santiago, Chile, as well as at the Columbus Memorial Library of the Organization of American States and the u.s. Library of Congress, both located in Washington, D.C. The documents themselves, microfilmed in these four collections, are the property of Doris Dana, bequeathed to her by Gabriela Mistral. The exception is Series II. The papers filmed in Series II, returned to the poetls Estate in 1960, were subsequently presented as a gift to The National Library of Chile by Doris Dana. The copyright for Gabriela Mistral's writings is the exclusive property of Doris Dana and therefore these works cannot be reproduced without her permission. Any inquiries in this regard should be addressed to Doris Dana, c/o Hispanic Division, The -Library of Congress, Washington, D.C. 20570. -1.1.1.
