Program Notes - - - Shades o Green was written or the Prairie Wind Ensemble o East Peoria, Illinois. The work was initially insired by a tri I took to Ireland in 2001. The title is meant as a reerence to the aearance o Ireland rom the air as you ly into the country. The work eloys two Irish olk tunes. The irst that you will hear is Bonny Light Horseman, a lyrical tune irst heard in the iano and woodwinds at the beginning o the iece. The second tune is a light and layul melody called Green Bushes. This theme is stated many times throughout the aster sections o the work. Both o these olk melodies are woven together throughout the iece and have an almost conversational quality in their interaction. Additionally, it was my goal to set these melodies in a more conteorary way, joining the old and the new into one.
