FREE SOUNDSET MONTAGE EXPANDED With MONTAGE Expanded, the first Promotion Soundset for the Yamaha MONTAGE is released. It was produced by Yamaha Music Europe in cooperation with EASY SOUNDS and Cool Webinars. The Promotion Soundset features: 128 Performances DX7-Selection 64 Performances EASY SOUNDS -Selection 64 Performances Cool Webinars Multiple Choice The "DX7 Selection" is based on 128 original DX7 Voices. It is a selection from sound categories like electric piano, chromatic percussion, guitar, organ, brass, and some more. After the import they were refined with effects as well as suitable Super Knob routings. The "EASY SOUNDS" selection contains a selection from the following premium MONTAGE Soundsets: MONTAGE Phat Analog MONTAGE Xtasyn MONTAGE Live Instruments MONTAGE Nature of Chill 16 Performances each cover a very wide stylistic range and convey a good impression of the respective Soundset. The MONTAGE versions of these Soundlibraries are based on the products of the same name for the Yamaha MOTIF series, but have been extensively expanded using new features of MONTAGE. All Performances except the Drum Kits contain a Super Knob assignment. The Multi- Part-Performances contain up to eight Scenes and eight Parts, partly also FM-X Parts. YAMAHA.COM 3

The 64 new Performances under the umbrella "Multiple Choice" by Cool Webinars are new MONTAGE Performances, which are divided into the following groups. BEST OF BOTH WORLDS - FM-X & AWM2 (8 PERFORMANCES) This is a series of Performances consisting of one AWM2 and one FM-X Part. The outstanding combination of both sound engines and the full polyphony of 128 voices are the main features of these Performances. FM-X - FROM DIGITAL TO ANALOG (8 PERFORMANCES) As the name expresses, these Performances draw a bow from digital to analogue - but exclusively with the use of FM-X-Parts. KEYBOARDER'S ADVANTAGE (8 PERFORMANCES) This compilation is intended for live keyboardists and contains typical Split and Layer combinations as well as some song-related Performances. GROOVY MONTAGE (16 PERFORMANCES) These Performances are all Arpeggio-based and use the diverse possibilities of the Scenes, the Super Knob, as well as the Motion Control Synthesis Engine. SINGLE-PART PIANO- AND E-PIANO- COLLECTION (8 PERFORMANCES) This compilation is an excellent basis for the creation of Layers with additional Parts or simply as 128-voice Single-Part-Performances. CHILLIN PADS & SPHERES (8 PERFORMANCES) Motion Sequences are used in these Performances to provide interesting ambiences. MUSICAL & SOUND EFFECTS (4 PERFORMANCES) COOL 8Z DRUM KITS (4 PERFORMANCES) These Performances don't need any additional explanation, their names are self explanatory. Live Sets were programmed for all Performances. The Soundset is available as a User and as a Library File. You are on the safe side if you load it as a Library, because none of your User data is overwritten. The Performances of EASY SOUNDS use User Waveforms within a manageable range of 172 MB. For further important notes, information, or a list of the entire contents please refer to the ReadMe file. DETAILS At the time of programming for the first Performance, work on the new Performances already lasted for almost two years. Due to the Firmware Updates released in the meantime, some adjustments were necessary. However, the duration of the programming work also has the advantage that the new features of the Firmware Version 1.50 could be fully included. Stylistically these new Performances cover a relatively broad spectrum. The Performances of the listed groups were programmed with clearly different approaches. For example, an important aspect for "Keyboarder's Advantage" and the "Single-Part... -Collection" was the immediate use in live situations. Both the sound as well as the contoller routing is optimized for the stage. The 16 new Performances of "Groovy MONTAGE" are based on the "typical" Arpeggio-supported Performances of the MOTIF series. Of course, all new MONTAGE features are used. These types of Performances are usually self-explanatory, but nonetheless I would like to explicitly explain two special features. YAMAHA.COM 4

The Performances Pure FM-X perience1 and 2 were programmed exclusively on the basis of FM-X-Parts. The Drum Parts are also generated by the FM engine. Thus it is not possible to play the sounds of the Drum Parts with a typical drum mapping. Instead, each Drum Part produces only one instrument, such as a bass drum or a snare. Only the synth toms are an exception to that - here different tunings are realised by the Arpeggios within the Part. One aspect that applies in principle to all 64 Performances is the exemplary demonstration of the possibilities to program MONTAGE for various musical applications. But now: Have fun with the Performances. I hope - also in the name of Yamaha Music Europe and Peter Krischker (EASY SOUNDS) - that this Soundset delivers something for every taste and need. In addition, I like to repeat a suggestion that regular readers might know: Use the Performances as inspiration for music, also as a template for your own Performance variants as well as a learning example. Your Hans-Peter Henkel DOWNLOAD To get this free goodie simply write an e-mail with the keyword MONTAGE Goodies to: montagegoodies@easysounds.de The "Club MONTAGE..." Performance series can be used for club tracks in which vocal samples are not included. In addition to the regular mixing possibilities with Part-mutes and volume, some Motion Sequences have been used to create further variants in cooperation with Arpeggios. In After successful registration you will get an e-mail from EASY SOUNDS containing the download link for the activation of the content. For the first time we will also publish this Promotion Soundset on YamahaMusicSoft.com - it will be available for free. Click here to see all MONTAGE Soundlibraries on YamahaMusicSoft. part, the Motion Sequences can be switched independently from the Scenes, which opens up additional possibilities for the progression of the song. SONGBOOK+ THE SWISS ARMY KNIFE FOR MONTAGE LIVE KEYBOARDISTS Sometimes our more and more digital age is accompanied by the need to explain certain things to young people that were self-evident before the dawn of this age. Two typical examples would be record players and cassette recorders. Perhaps this will soon apply to the paper-based music sheet and text folders. Anyone who has spent some time on the road as a live musician knows these folders well enough - including their disadvantages. Torn paper sheets, yellowed document covers, traces of spilled drinks... but above all the partial "easy" challenge of the organisation. Now there are musicians who easily know the evening's program by heart. On the other hand, over the decades, I have seen colleagues who didn't dare to produce a sound (nor from their instrument) without having a lead sheet in front of their nose. And sometimes it is - Murphy's law back and forth - so that people with a strong need for good organisation are those who have a "small" problem with being organised. Who doesn't know the failure of the spontaneous encore, because exactly this sheet was missing. Again. But I better stop talking about old times, let's go back to the present. Since several years many musicians have been saying good-bye to classical music stands. Tablets and corresponding Apps replace the music sheet or textbook. The benefits are diverse, including extensive avoidance of the situations described above. SongBook+ is certainly one of the most popular Apps for organising music sheets or lyrics on a tablet computer. The App is designed for the ipad. Information about requirements concerning hardware and the ios version can be found in the itunes Store. I met the developer, Matthias Bauer, at this year's Musikmesse. He is actually resident in Switzerland! During our conversation, we had the idea to write a brief workshop about SongBook+ for the Music Production Guide. To get YAMAHA.COM 6

it right: I will restrict myself to the essential features that are important for Yamaha MONTAGE. The App offers a variety of features. There is a very good manual and, of course, there is also support. BASICS What makes working with SongBook+ and MONTAGE so comfortable is the fact that beyond the simple organisation of music sheets and texts it can output MIDI commands. So when you select a Song in SongBook+, you can either call a Live Set or a Performance on the MONTAGE. Of course, you have to have a MIDI connection between ipad and MONTAGE for this. Both wired and wireless connections are supported. The manual provides a good overview of the possible connection types. I have tested the following: USB cable with Apple Lightning-to-USB Camera An advantage of the wireless connection is the possibility to charge the ipad at the same time, which is not possible with the Apple Lightning-to-USB2.0 Camera Adapter. To work with SongBook+, files must be imported first. The text display supports all common graphics formats, pure text (TXT), and PDF. You can use itunes to import files, but other usual import options are also offered, for example directly from an e-mail. Immediately after the import, the files appear as "unused files". In order to be able to work with them in the App, they have to be transferred to the Songlist. Various additional information can be entered during this transfer. At the same time, there is the possibility to work with MIDI commands. This does not necessarily have to be done immediately, of course, this page can also be called up afterwards. The "Edit Song" function can be accessed via a menu. Adapter Yamaha UD-BT01 Yamaha MD-BT01 YAMAHA.COM 7

The corresponding page opens, as does the transfer of an unused file into the Songlist. At the bottom left the "Send MIDI command on open" button can be found. If a command is to be sent when a Song is loaded, this switch has to be activated. To the right of it the input field for the data is located. The usual MSB / LSB / PRG CHANGE commands are used. As you know from previous articles, the user interface of MONTAGE does not work with a recognisable Bank system. However, internally the 640 User Performances are divided into five Banks with 128 Performances each. So, you can select Performance number 3 from the User Bank 1 with the following command: MSB=063 LSB=080 PRG=002 To find out which command you need for the respective Performances, take a look at the Performance's "Properties", as follows: [PERFORMANCE (HOME)] > [ENTER] > Property (via the touch screen) There's one thing to keep in mind when working with Program Change commands: MONTAGE starts counting with "001" for the first Performance of a respective Bank, while SongBook+ starts counting with "000" just as the MSB / LSB commands do. These commands allow you to select Live Sets as well as Performances in MONTAGE. For Live Sets, the 16 pages of User Bank 1 can be selected via MIDI. The necessary MIDI commands can be found in the Data List. Due to the large memory of MONTAGE, which is distributed to the areas "Preset", "User", and "Library", the Data Lists are relatively extensive. It is not, however, a witchcraft. Since the main scope of application in this context is a Multi-Part Performance, I will restrict myself to these in the following examples. For example, suppose you want to select Live Set Slot #3 of page 1 with a Song in SongBook+. The following command is required: MSB=062 LSB=000 PRG=002 The commands work regardless of whether you are in the Live Set or Performance Home Screen. There is no mode change such as when the [PERFORMANCE (HOME)] or [LIVE SET] buttons are pressed. In addition, it should be noted that the change of a Performance (invoked by SongBook+) also works "in the background" while MONTAGE plays an audio file (Performance Play/Rec Audio screen). YAMAHA.COM 8

ADVANCED SongBook+ features a really great range of functions. It's possible to send SysEx commands or even MIDI files. Audio and video files are also supported. It is interesting to note that due to the ios-class-compliance of MONTAGE while using a cable-based connection the audio signal of the ios device is output via the main-out of the instrument. In addition, there are so-called "Actions", which are divided as follows: Actions on Open Actions on Start Actions on Stop The supported Actions can be found in the following screenshot. A possible application is, of course, to send special MIDI commands, such as SysEx or special Controller data. Doing so would make it possible to replace individual Parts within a MONTAGE Performance. For instance I have replaced a Part on channel 3 in a Performance using the Start command. And I have assigned two Command strings to the Stop command, which replace Part 1 and 2 simultaneously. If necessary, up to three variants of a Performance could be made on the fly. Even when changing individual Parts, the Seamless Sound Switching function of MONTAGE works. In addition, the Split Points are also loaded with the Part - these can't be stored in Scenes. In addition, user-defined Buttons can be inserted into the notes that can be added to each text. These offer an even greater range of functions, all important MIDI functions included. In my opinion, that's what makes SongBook+ a small but very powerful MIDI control center. Extensive command chains can be created, too. YAMAHA.COM 9

Keyboardists who use audio files stored in the flash memory can also benefit from these Actions. The Note- On and -Off commands, for example, can be used to specifically start and stop one or more audio files or loops. One possible application would be to provide the drummer with an audio-click via the Assignable Outs, while a different audio file is started in sync via the Main Outs. The Parts used for this can be disconnected from the keyboard with "Keyboard Control", alternatively their Split Point and Start Note can be set outside the keyboard area. Or you can use the Parts 9-16 for this purpose, when you can dispense Seamless Sound Switching. And let me remind you, that you can use multiple Performances in will surely develop further good ideas for the cooperation between MONTAGE and SongBook+. The App SongBook+ can be loaded and tested with full functionality. The restriction refers only to the number of possible Songs and Books that can be managed (1 Book, 15 Songs). This allows you to experiment in a relaxed way and make a purchase decision. The full version of SongBook+ is not "cheap" for an App, but in my opinion definitely worth the price. Why an App with such a range of functions is considered to be expensive, although it costs less than an evening for two in a restaurant, will personally never open to me anyway. MONTAGE and Songs in SongBook+ to play the different parts of a single song. It is just a question of appropriate Hans-Peter Henkel preparation. CONCLUSION I myself can manage an evening of music without text and/or music sheets. (For me it has with the charming advantage that I can play without the necessary glasses.) If, however, you have a fairly extensive program, the correct choice of the Performance for the next song alone might become challenging. After all, you don't need to have a special Performance for each song, which would make it recognisable by name. As a result, SongBook+ could help organise larger programs to keep an overview of your Performances. In addition, if I consider the versatility of the App, as described in the section "Advanced", I can only recommend it. Anyone who thinks beyond the boundaries YAMAHA.COM 10

MONTAGE PERFORMANCE RECORDING PART 1 In the Music Production Guide issue number 2016-02 we already wrote about Song Recording with MONTAGE (in the chapter Sequencing on pages 15/16). In this and the next part I m going to take a close look on this function. This first part covers the basic functions of the internal Sequencer of MONTAGE. The next part will be about some special applications and how to make it seamlessly and perfectly work with external Sequencers (DAWs). THE CONCEPT OF MONTAGE S MIDI SEQUENCER MONTAGE s PLAY/REC function consists of a MIDI Sequencer and an Audio Recorder. I will come back to the Audio Recorder function at the end of this article. First, let me explain the concept and usage of the MIDI Sequencer. Roughly said, it is a Performance Recorder which can be compared to the Direct Performance Recording functionality of the MOTIF XF in terms of its possibilities. YAMAHA.COM 12

As you know, Performances in MONTAGE contain one or more Parts which are controlled by playing on the keyboard or by Arpeggiators. If you activate the MIDI Sequencer, the notes played on the keyboard and the movements of Controllers for each Part are recorded as MIDI events on separate Tracks. If the Parts are set as Layers, the same MIDI events are recorded for each Layer-Part on its own Track. For Split Performances, the notes that are played outside the set Note Limit Ranges are also recorded in the corresponding Tracks of the Parts. But since the Note Limits are retained during playback (as long as the Part settings were not changed), the Performance still sounds as recorded. For Arpeggiator-Parts, the notes and control events To gain such an result with an external DAW would require some configuration effort (MIDI setup, Sync, Arp MIDI Out), which itself requires a little more know-how. So do not miss out on the Performance Recording and get to know its advantages. Even certified DAW users will be thrilled! The Songs generated with the Performance Recording in MONTAGE can be exported as Standard MIDI Files (see below) or transferred to a DAW by using the software MONTAGE Connect. For more information on MONTAGE Connect, see the second part in the next issue. THE TRANSPORT BUTTONS OF THE SEQUENCER generated by the Arpeggiator are recorded instead of the notes that were played on the keyboard. You will learn more about this later. Each Sequencer Track is automatically assigned to the MIDI channel of the respective Part, ie Track 1 = Part 1, Track 2 = Part 2, Track 3 = Part 3, etc. The MONTAGE Sequencer is not designed for complex Multi-Track recordings where the Tracks can be recorded one at a time and then edited in an edit mode. For this purpose, the use of an external Sequencer (DAW) is required. Nevertheless, also die-hard DAW users should keep reading. A Performance recording with the MONTAGE Sequencer provides an excellent base even for complex music productions. The big advantage of the "on board" Performance Recording is the simultaneous recording of multiple Parts including the automatic conversion of played keys into Arpeggio events. You record a Performance with up to eight Parts at once and have a result that renders the same sound as while recording. Without your intervention, separate Tracks have been created for each Part that are perfect for further use in the DAW you prefer. The SEQ TRANSPORT buttons control the recording and playback of the Song Sequencer. The buttons actually explain themselves: Top left: Top button This will immediately return you to the beginning of the current Song (to the first beat of the first measure) Top center: Reverse button The playback position is moved backwards measurewise Top right: Forward button The playback position is advanced measurewise Bottom left: Record button The Record Setup screen is displayed (the button flashes) Bottom center: Stop button Recording or playback is paused Bottom right: Play button The recording or playback is started YAMAHA.COM 13

SEQUENCE RECORDING AND PLAYBACK The recording of MIDI sequences as MONTAGE Songs is performed with these steps: Select a Performance and exit the CATEGORY SEARCH display with EXIT Press RECORD. This will take you directly to the Play / Rec display. The Sequencer is now in standby mode Press PLAY. The recording starts with a one-measure pre-count. You will hear a metronome click Start your recording with the beginning of the first measure Press STOP to stop the recording process Click on the Song name in the upper part of the display, then on the left on "Rename" to enter a name for the Song Immediately after you stop recording with STOP, the Sequence can be played back with pressing PLAY. The Sequencer is automatically rewinded to the first measure. The volume of the Parts can be adjusted with the Sliders If, on the other hand, you want to keep an already existing Song selected, you have to switch between "Home" and "Play / Rec" from and to the current Performance via the display menu. SUPER KNOB If you want to record the movements of the Super Knob in a Song, you should turn the Super Knob to the desired start position at the beginning of the recording, that is, in the first recorded measure. In this case, it is advisable to start recording with the second measure. During playback, this ensures that the Super Knob automatically starts with the correct initial value. RECORD TYPES After the first recording of a new Song, different Record Types are available for further recordings in the same Song. With "Replace", the previously recorded notes are completely replaced "Overdub" adds a new recording to the previous recordings without replacing any notes With "Punch" you record only within an adjustable range (Punch In to Punch Out). The data previously recorded in this area are overwritten completely. Playback of the recorded Track is disabled in the Punch area If you want to record several Songs one after the other with different Performances, the type of navigation to the Sequencer (Play / Rec) is important. If you press RECORD directly from the Home screen as described above, a new Song will be created. If you switch from the Home display to the Play / Rec display, the last selected Song will appear. So, for a new recording, the navigation to the Sequencer should always be done directly by hitting the RECORD button. UNDO AND REDO UNDO can be used to discard changes made by a recording. The previous state is restored. UNDO is not yet available after the first recording, but only if it has been YAMAHA.COM 14

overwritten or changed by a new recording with the Record Type "Replace", "Overdub", or "Punch". Of course, the current result after the change can be auditioned with PLAY before the UNDO function is used. UNDO is no longer possible as soon as the Play / Rec display has been exited. If the first recording is already to be overwritten completely, this can be done with a new recording with the Record Type "Replace". REDO is only available after an UNDO operation. Redo can be used to recover the changes that were rejected by UNDO. SETTING THE METRONOME This function is only available when a USB storage device is connected to the USB TO DEVICE port of the MONTAGE. After you have tapped on the "Save As.mid File" field, you will be taken to the "Contents - Store/Save" Utility display, where you will see "Save as New File" after opening the USB device ("usb1-1"). The Metronome Click of the Sequencer can be set in UTILITY - Tempo Settings - Click. If you feel disturbed by a continuous Click and want to hear it only in the pre-count, you should set Click Volume to a low value (for example, 16) so that you can only hear it in the pre-count but not in the actual recording. This can be useful for Arpeggio Performances with Drum Parts, for example, since no Click is required during recording then. When storing the SMF, you should select a name that contains the name of the Performance. Since a stored MIDI file itself does not contain any information about the assigned Performance, having the Performance's name in the file name greatly facilitates a later import process. An external backup of all Songs in the MONTAGE format is possible since OS 1.50 with the newly added File Type "Backup". A Backup File contains all the contents of the User Bank and the Libraries as well as the recorded Songs including the Performance assignments. STORING SONGS A recorded Song is automatically stored internally in the MONTAGE and can be re-loaded with the "Load" function. However, important Song recordings should also be saved as a Standard MIDI File (SMF) for security purposes. This is possible directly from the Play / Rec display with the function "Save As.mid File". To save a backup file, follow these steps: Press the UTILITY button Select "Contents - Store / Save" on the left side of the display Set the Content Type "Backup File" at the top of the display Open USB Device - tap on "Save as New File...". If no storing or loading operations have been executed before, you have to tap on the USB Device ("usb 1-1") first YAMAHA.COM 15

An alternative option of backing up the recorded Songs externally is the transfer to the PC / MAC using the free Yamaha software "MONTAGE Connect". I will discuss that option later. MANAGING SONGS INTERNALLY The Songs automatically saved in MONTAGE can be managed in UTILITY - Contents - Data Utility - Song. The Songs can be deleted or renamed after tapping on their name. MONTAGE SEQUENCER AND ARPEGGIATOR The connection between the Sequencer and the Arpeggiator only works in one direction. It works only from the Arpeggiator to the Sequencer and not vice versa. When recording, the events generated by the Arpeggiator are automatically recorded in "Arp Out" mode, even if it is not activated in UTILITY. There is no connection to the Arpeggiator during playback. It is therefore irrelevant whether the Arpeggiator is switched on or off during playback. The recorded Arpeggio events are played in the same way as with a manually played Track without triggering the Arpeggiator again. It is also not possible with the MONTAGE Sequencer to record a Track that control controls the Arpeggiator. This would only be possible with the use of an external Sequencer (Cubase, Logic...). If you want to make a "fresh start", you can also delete all Songs in one go. To do this, tap on "Job" in the upper right corner. With "Select All" (below), all Songs can be selected and then deleted with "Delete". LOADING SONGS Existing Songs can be selected from UTILITY - Contents - Data Utility - Load. For this purpose, the Content Type "Song & Perf" (with Performance assignment) or "Song" (without Performance assignment) can be selected. If, however, the Play/Rec display is already selected, you can also go directly to the Load display by tapping on the Song name. YOUTUBE Hans-Peter Henkel has produced a hands-on video on the subject of Performance Recording, which can be found on Yamaha Music Europe's YouTube channel: Since there is no connection from the Sequencer to the Arpeggiator, the "Arp Play Only" setting, which is often present in Drum Parts, becomes ineffective. The Drum Part is also played when the Arpeggiator is switched off. The functionality described here must by no means be regarded as a restriction. Rather, it is intended and necessary to be able to implement the principle "What you hear is what you get" without restrictions. After a recording with several Arpeggio Parts, the playback can be started immediately, without having to switch off the Arpeggiator and change the "Arp Play Only" setting, which would be a major obstacle to the workflow. FIRST CONCLUSION At this point, the first part of the Performance Recording workshop ends. I hope your interest in the use of the MONTAGE Sequencer has been awakened. The second part in the next issue will focus on the interaction of the MONTAGE Sequencer with external sequencer software (DAWs), along with some other topics such as Audio Recording and Playback. It s based on authentic samples of oriental percussion instruments. The oriental instruments are however well suited for use in other music styles such as Pop, World, Chill Out, Ambient, etc. Oriental Percussion was programmed by the Turkish musician and producer Mert Topel. Since 1990 Mert Topel is working as a musician with nationally and internationally known pop and rock stars such as Tarkan (1993-2008) and many others. Mert recorded several albums as a producer of jazz, fusion, rock bands, and singers like Kirac, Mor ve Otesi, Gülden Goksen, Grizu etc. He also has his own jazz-rock band Fenomen, which published its first album in 2006 - with very good response from jazz lovers. Another project is a collaboration with Alper Maral in the production of an electro-acoustic-oriented album called The Voltage Control Project, which appeared in 2010. The DTX-12 MULTI Patterns produced by Mert Topel should inspire the musician in the first place and serve as basis for his own music productions.
