Broward Estates Courageous Characters Read-a-Thon: Mystery Guest Readers will read a book highlighting positive character traits of civil rights icons in history past and present to students in grades Pre-K through 5. 10 Second Plot Summary Challenge: Students will make a 10 second presentation that summarizes the plot/theme of a fables/fairytales/folktales: The presentation make consist of the following: oral presentation, video presentation, rap, song, dance, visual art, slideshow of photos with voiceover, drawing with short summary, etc. Select students from each grade level will be chosen to present their summaries at the Black History Program in February. Storytelling with African Research Librarians: Students will listen to African American Folktales read orally and then create their own folktales to be shared on WBEE News Morning Show. Country Isles Prepare for author in Residence and Storyteller, Carrie Sue Ayvar. Ms. Ayvar, a nationally renowned Master Storyteller, will present to the students and will be sharing her presentation with students at Walker Elementary through a Distance Learning experience. During the month of January, Country Isles' families will be donating new pajamas and books to share with each kindergarten student at Walker Elementary. Student Council members will be organizing the pajamas and books to distribute to these students. Welcome Award Winning Performance Artist, Carrie Sue Ayvar. Nova Blanche Forman N/A Our fourth graders will be doing a vocabulary parade in the afternoon. Each student will dress up as a vocabulary term. The entire school will take part in a "Drop Everything and Read" event. EVERYONE will be reading during that half hour in the afternoon. We will be hosting a parent literacy night that evening. N/A Nova Eisenhower Drop Everything and Read- Students will carry a book with them at all times during the day. Announce it's DEAR time 4-5 times throughout the day. At that time, everyone, no matter what must stop and read their book for 10 minutes in order to build excitement for the week. The Snowman: Play the movie first thing in the morning on Nova News. Each classroom will be given a section of the text to complete a whole group writing piece. The writing pieces will be collected and made into a book to share on the news on Friday. Tumblebooks Day: All teachers will be asked to allow their students time to search the Tumblebook site for books that interest them. Students should work in small groups after the teacher demonstrates. Everyone will then take an AR test on one of the books they read and complete a response to literature activity of the teacher's choice. A to Z list in each grade level telling why reading is rewarding. Chart paper will be hung in each hallway listing the letters A-Z and titled, Reading is Rewarding in Grade. The teachers will brainstorm with their class to come up with small phrases or sentences appropriate for their assigned letters. Book Buddy Day: Each primary class will be paired up with an intermediate class to read together somewhere around the school. The teachers will decide where they would like to meet their buddy class and who will bring the books. Oakridge Reading Buddies Older students have the opportunity to read to the Primary classes. Teachers will be paired and can set the time that works best for them. Staff Favorite Books The media center specialist will take pictures of ten of the staff with their favorite books. Students will be asked to connect each teacher with their favorite book. Winners will receive a free book. Poem in Your Pocket Students all select or compose a poem of their choice. It will be kept in their pocket on this day. Students can be asked at any given time to produce the poem and read it to their classmates or teacher. Some students also read their poems to the whole school over WKID. Reading Picnic Parents will be invited to join their child for the morning reading picnic from 8:30-9:00AM. Pembroke Lakes Musical Book Buffet- At the end of the day, teachers place a book on each desk to read for 6 minutes while music plays over the PA system. Then students switch to read another book when the music stops. Continue to rotate reading for 24 minutes from 1:25-1:49 when music stops. Jump Jingles & Mystery Book: Coach Serdenes will use jump jingles during PE classes. He will also give clues of our mystery book during each class. Students can stop by Guidance Suite to drop off guesses before and after school by Thursday, January 25 at 2:05 PM.
